  • Fracture toughness characterization in the transition region is examined for heat-treated and ionnitrided Ni-Cr-Mo steel. After heat treatment for the specimens of Ni-Cr-Mo steel, organizations of specimens-specimens which are heat-treated and ion-nitrided for 4 hours at 500 .deg. C and 5 torr in 25%N/dub 2/-75%H/sub 2/mixed gas-, hardness variety, and X-ray diffraction pattern of the ion-nitriding compound layer are observed. Fracture toughenss test of unloading compliance method were conducted over the regions from room trmperature to -70.deg. C. The compound layer was consisted of r'=Fe/sub 4/N phase and ion-nitrided layer's depth was 200mm from surface. The transition regions of heat-treated and ion-nitrided specimens were about -30.deg. C and -50.deg. C, respectively. The transition region of ion-nitrided specimens is estimated less than that of heat-treated one, and this is the effect of ion-nitriding.

  • Zirconia powder containing 3 mol% yttria (3Y-PSZ) was casted on the cast iron substrate by plasma spraying method. Coated specimens were then heat treated at 500$\^{C}$ in nitrogen plasma. Wear tests were performed on nitrogen heat treated and non heat treated samples at temperatures from 25$\^{C}$ to 600$\^{C}$. Wear results showed that the friction coefficient and the wear loss of both the treated and the non-treated samples showed maximum value at 400$\^{C}$. These results were explained by low temperature thermal degradation due to the monoclinic transformation. Nitrogen plasma treatment significantly improved the tribological performance. The effect of nitrogen heat treatment on tribological behavior was explained by the increased micro-hardness and decreased monoclinic faction.

  • Recently, yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) is getting attention in Korea due to the fast growing and high yield and quality of lumber. But, it is thought that the color difference between heartwood and sapwood may restrict the practical use of it. This study was aimed to enhance the value of yellow poplar lumber by the color control using high temperature heat-treatment, which had been tried for domestic cedar (Kim et al., 2009). The material properties including surface color of yellow poplar lumber were evaluated according to heat treatment conditions. The difference of color between sapwood and heartwood could be reduced by heat treatment at a temperature about $200^{\circ}C$. Long heating time was more effective in reducing the difference. The Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) of heat-treated wood was as low as 50 percent of the control. The result obviously indicates that heat-treated wood is more dimensionally stable in the change of moisture condition. The durability against wood rotting fungi also increased by the heat-treated, but it was not so effective as the case of cedar. The changes of mechanical properties of heat-treated yellow poplar were very similar to that of heat-treated cedar. In order to develop new use of heat-treated yellow poplar, the changes of mechanical properties should be considered. There were no significant changes in microscopic structure which may cause changes in mechanical properties. Further study of heat-treated wood is needed to scrutinize the causes of changes of material properties.

  • Temperature prediction model was developed for on-line application to plate rolling mills of POSCO. The adequate boundary conditions of heat transfer coefficients were obtained by comparing the predicted temperature with the measured temperatures taken by measuring system in plate rolling mill of POSCO. In obtaining the boundary condition which minimize the mean and standard deviation of the difference between prediction and measurement, orthogonal array for experimental design was used to reduce the calculation time of large data set. To predict the temperature drop at four edge of plate in one dimensional model, the energy change by heat transfer though directions perpendicular to thickness direction was treated like that by deformation. And the heat transfer through four edge directions was inferred from that through thickness direction with two coefficients of depth and severity of temperature drop at the edge. The boundary condition for the depth and severity of temperature drop were also determined using the measured temperature.

  • The deformation behaviors of full annealed and T6 treated 6061, 7075 aluminum tubes are investigated at various temperature performing uniaxial tensile test. Full annealed Al 6061 and Al7075 tubes, and T6 treated Al7075 tube don't show sharp local necking with an elongation of 50% at $300^{\circ}C$. So it is expected that influenced by elevated tempterature. At $300^{\circ}C$ and strain rate of 0.001/s, many micro-cracks are observed in T6 treated Al 6061 tube, which is believed to be responsible for the decrease of total elongation.

  • To evaluate the posterior and anterior restoration of polymeric dental restorative composite (PDRC), PDRC was prepared using a silica filler treated by heat at various temperatures. Compressive strength (CS) and diametral tensile strength (DTS) values were investigated to study the effect of a heat-treated silica on the mechanical properties of PDRC using the recommended dental specifications. Both the particle size and specific volume of silica were decreased upon increasing the heat treatment temperature. CS and DTS values of PDRC containing a heat-treated silica showed 1.2 and 1.3 times, respectively, higher than that of the PDRC containing a neat silica. Also, it was found that the lower heat treatment temperature, the better mechanical properties of PDRC were observed because there was less agglomeration between silica particles. Specially, PDRC using a silica treated at $600^{\circ}C$ showed superior mechanical strength.

  • Mullite precursors were synthesized with aluminosilicate gels from mixture of aluminum nitrate and sodium orthosilicate by the geopolymer technique at ambient temperature. Then, the gel was heat-treated in air up to $1200^{\circ}C$ at intervals of $100^{\circ}C$. Raw and heat-treated gels were characterized by TG-DTA, XRD, FTIR, $^{29}Si$ MAS-NMR, TEM. The result to examine the crystallization of behavior though DTA, the synthesized precursors were crystallized in the temperature range from $950^{\circ}C$ to $1050^{\circ}C$. The XRD results showed that the gel compositions were begun to crystallize at various temperature. Also, it was found that the precursors of M-4 begun to crystallize at about $950^{\circ}C$. The M-4 XRD peaks were characterized better than $M-1{\sim}M-3$ at $1000^{\circ}C$. The formation temperature of mullite in this study is much lower than that of previous sol-gel methods, which crystallized at up of $1200^{\circ}C$. TEM investigations revealed that the sample with 10 nm particle size was obtained via heat-treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ for M-4.

  • The Si5AION7 specimens containing 20% YAG composition have been sintered and then heat treated to induce the crystallization of the matrix glassy phase. Crystallization of YAG phase during the heat treatment was detected from the X-ray diffraction patterns and the consequent changes in room temperature toughness as well as in microstructures were investigated. Almost all the glassy boundary phase were found to crystallize even after 5 minutes of heat treatment and the KC at room temperature decreased accordingly. The results show that the matrix crystallization can be induced by slow cooling from the sintering temperature.

  • This investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al hybrid material prepared by electromagnetic duo-casting to determine the effect of heat treatment. The hybrid material is composed of an Al-Mg-Si alloy, pure Al and the interface between the Al-Mg-Si alloy and pure Al. It is heat-treated at 373, 573 and 773K for 1h and T6 treated (solution treatment at 773K for 1h and aging at 433K for 5h). As the temperature increases, the grain size of the Al-Mg-Si alloy in the hybrid material increases. The grain size of the T6 treated Al-Mg-Si alloy is similar to that of one heat-treated at 773K for 1h. The interface region where the micro-hardness becomes large from the pure Al to the Al-Mg-Si alloy widens with an increasing heat temperature. The hybrid material with a macro-interface parallel to the tensile direction experiences increased tensile strength, 0.2 % proof stress and the decreased elongation after T6 heat treatment. On the other hand, in the vertical direction to the tensile direction, there is no great difference with heat treatment. The bending strength of the hybrid material with a long macro-interface to the bending direction is higher than that with a short macro-interface, which is improved by heat treatment. The hybrid material with a long macro-interface to the bending direction is fractured by cracking through the eutectic structure in the Al-Mg-Si alloy. However, in the hybrid material with a short macro-interface, the bending deformation is observed only in the limited pure Al.

  • In order to fabricate porous ceramics, hydrated sodium silicate was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction using anhydrous sodium silicate. The microstructural and the structural characteristics of the expanded ceramics were observed depending on heat treatment temperature (550, 600, 650, $700^{\circ}C$) and then the effect of these characteristics on the compressive strength and the temperature gradient was investigated. As the heat treatment temperature was increased, the compressive strength was decreased from $0.717KN/cm^2\;(550^{\circ}C)\;to\;0.166KN/cm^2\;(700^{\circ}C)$. The temperature gradient was increased with increasing the experimental temperature regardless of the heat treatment temperature. The temperature gradient of the expanded ceramics which was heat treated at $650^{\circ}C\;was\;300^{\circ}C$. The bulk specific gravity, porosity, pore size, pore characteristics and wall thickness were varied depending on heat treatment temperature, and the compressive strength and the temperature gradient were governed by the complex effects of these factors.
