  • The effects of added elements, such as Co or Nb, on wear properties of high speed steel by powder metallurgy(PM-HSS) had been evaluated in previous paper. The wear properties of materials, in fact, have been a]so influenced by heat-treating conditions. In this paper, the effects of heat-treating conditions on wear properties of PM-HSS have been evaluated. The wear tests have been performed as same conditions as previous paper using PM-HSS(5%Co-1%Nb) heat-treated under different quenching and tempering temperature. The result of this paper shows that wear resistance of PM-HSS is improved with relatively high quenching temperature. However tempering temperature is not sensitve to the wear resistance in range of high quenching temperature. It may be deduced by the fact that the shear strength of matrix by strengthening mechanisms of quenching aging in addition to dispersion-hardening is improved.

  • Re-hydration properties of heated and ground CaO-SiO2-H2O system were studied under hydrothermal condition in order to examine the possibility of recycling ALC waste as raw materials of ALC. Powder of calcium silicate hydrates and ALC waste without heat treatment did not show further hydration while those of heat-treated at proper temperature showed re-hydration properties under hydrothermal condition. The lath-like shape of initially synthesized tobermorite was gradually turned into small debris during heating and plate-like tobermorite was crystallized during re-hydration of the heated powders. Heated and ground ALC waste could be added to natural raw mix for ALC at the ammount up to 20% with increased compressive strength and up to 30% with slightly decreased compressive strength. The optimum heating temperature of ALC for recycling was about 50$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Heat treatment of wood is an attractive alternative environmentally-friendly treatment to add value of less valuable woods by improving color, dimensional stability, and natural durability. To improve the color properties of Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis) and royal paulownia (Pauwlonia tomentosa), we treated the woods at $160^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $220^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Color change after heat treatment was evaluated using the CIE-Lab color system and survey was conducted to determine the consumer preferences towards color of heat-treated wood. Lightness ($L^*$) decreased with increasing temperature and the higher degree of change was obtained in royal paulownia. The red/green chromaticity ($a^*$) in both wood decreased after heat treatment at $160^{\circ}C$, and constantly increased after heat treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ to $220^{\circ}C$. Yellow/blue chromaticity ($b^*$) in Korean white pine tended to increase after heat treatment at $160^{\circ}C$, then decreased gradually afterwards. In royal paulownia, $b^*$ values linearly increased with increasing temperature. Overall color change (${\Delta}E^*$) increased with increasing temperature with higher degree obtained in royal paulownia. Samples with the clamps in both wood species showed lower degree of the change in $L^*$, $a^*$, b and ${\Delta}E^*$. The results of the consumer preferences test showed that the darker colors of heat-treated woods were more preferred by consumers compared to the lighter colors of untreated woods. Consequently, heat treatment could enhance the color properties of Korean white pine and royal paulownia woods for value added products.

  • In this study, selected cotton fabrics and polyester/cotton(P/C) blended fabrics are treated with a soluble polyurethane(SPU) and then, printed by heat transfer to determine the effect of SPU treatment on dye uptake of the samples. The results obtained are as follows: 1) In heat transfer, dye-uptake gets higher in Vopotion to temperature and time. The optimum printing temperature and printing time of C.I. Disperse Orange 3 and C.I. Disperse Violet 1 are $200^\circ{C}$ and 50sec. 2) Dye-uptake gets higher according to SPU concentration ; both cotton and P/C fabrics show the highest at $100g/\ell$. 3) In color, as temperature, time and SPU concentration increase, P/C fabrics show more yellowish orange color than cotton fabrics in case of C.I. Disperse Orange 3 and P/C fabrics show more reddish violet color than cotton fabrics in case of C.I. Disperse Violet 1. 4) All fastness of cotton and P/C fabrics treated with SPU are good, but color fastness to washing and water of cotton fabrics treated with SPU are not good.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes of physical and chemical properties according to the preserving periods and temperature in heat-treated market milks ($130^{\circ}C$, 2 sec). The market ilks were divided into 3 experimental groups, that is $4^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ according to the preserving temperature during 7 days. There were analysed fat, protein, lactose, total solids, solids-not-fat, specific gravity and acid value of market milks in each experimental group. These observations indicated that heat-treated market milks ($130^{\circ}C$, 2 sec) may be acceptable physically and chemically after 7 days at $4^{\circ}C$. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. Total microorganisms in market milks were found 12$\times$$10^1$ cells at 1st day Coliform and pathogenic bacteria were not detected. 2. Milk fats tended to decrease 3.69% to 3.48% according to the time lapsed in all experimental groups without concerning to the storage temperature. 3. Milk proteins were slowly decreased 3.18% to 3.13% according to the time lapsed without concerning to the storage temperature. 4. Milk lactose was slightly increased 4.41% to 4.55% in all experimental groups. 5. Specific gravity in market milks was 1.0316 to 1.0299, and showed no changes according to the preserving periods and temperature. 6. Total solids and solids-not-fat in market milks were slightly decreased 12.30 to 12.05 and 8.55 to 8.40. 7. Acid values were dramatically increased 0.1289 to 0.3116 at $30^{\circ}C$ storage group, while tended to be stable at $4^{\circ}C$ storage group for 7 days.

  • The behavior of nucleation and crystallization in the $Li_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass heat-treated at different condition under the conventional and microwave processing was studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), and electrical conductivity measurement. Nucleation temperature and temperature of maximum nucleation rate in both conventionally and microwave heat-treated samples were 460~$500^{\circ}C$ and $580^{\circ}C$, respectively. It was expected that the probability for bulk crystallization increased in microwave heat-treated sample, compared to conventionally heat-treated one. Degree of crystallization increased with increasing crystallization temperature in both conventionally and microwave heat-treated samples. However, pattern of crystallization growth under microwave processing appeared to be quite different from that under the conventional one due to its internal or volumetric heating. Electrical conductivity of conventionally and microwave heat-treated samples were 1.337~2.299, 0.281~~$0.911{\times}10^{-7}\Omega {\textrm}{cm}^{-1}$, respectively.

  • To examine the effect of heat treatment temperature in finishing process on PET/PBT Fabric, PET/PBT Fabrics were treated at different relaxing temp., pre-set temp., and final-set temp.. The dimensions such as thickness and density were measured, and the handles were evaluated by Kawabata system. In relaxing which was wet heat treatment, thickness and bulkiness were increased, and NUMERI, FUKURAMI, SOFUTOSA, and THV also were increased but KOSHI was decreased with elevating temperature. With elevating pre-set temp., thickness and bulkiness were decreased, but KOSHI was increased. NUMERI, FUKURAMI, SOFUTOSA, and THV were the best at 180$^{\circ}C$ pre-set treatment. In final-set which was dry heat treatment like pre-set, thickness, bulkiness, NUMERI, HUKURAMI, SOFUTOSA, and THV were decreased, but KOSHI value was increased with elevating temperature. Therefore the best heat treatment condition was 130$^{\circ}C$ relaxing, 180$^{\circ}C$ pre-set, and 160$^{\circ}C$ final-set. And the handle of PET/PBT Fabric was affected much more by relaxing temp. than pre-set temp. and final-set temp.

  • Titanium is resistant to general corrosion and in sea water because of the passivity layer film on the surface of material, but may be attacked by environments that cause breakdown of the protective oxide layer including hydrochloric, sulfuric and phosphoric acids. In this study, the Ti alloys were solution heat treatment 5hours at $1066^{\circ}C$ and $966^{\circ}C$, and followed by aging heat treated, 1, 4, 8 and 16 hours in $500^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$ respectively. The heat treated specimens were measured micro Vicker's hardness, and then accomplished electrochemical polarization test for comparing corrosion in 1N sulfuric acid solution. Additionally, micro structures were taken for corrosion tested specimens. The results showed that corrosion resistance was higher in solution heat treated alloy than base and age heat treated metal. Measured corrosion resistants were increased as increasing aging heat treatment time and temperature.

  • In order to investigate the effects of heat treatment on the thermoelectric motive force (EMF) of type R thermocouples, the changes of EMF in the freezing points of aluminum and silver cells were measured with the immersion depth of themocouples. With the variation of heat treatment methods before use, it was found that the EMF values were different from each other, maximum $17.1{\mu}V$ at $660.323^{\circ}C$ and $18.1{\mu}V$ at $961.78^{\circ}C$. Additionally a thermocouple, which was not heat-treated fully, showed an EMF difference with the immersion depth even though it was located on the region maintained at the constant temperature. The measured differences were about maximum $7.8{\mu}V$ at the Al freezing point and $18.9{\mu}V$ at the Ag freezing point. It was recongnized that a thermocouple for the precise temperature measurement should be heat-treated carefully before service. In this report, the proper heat treatment methods for the type R thermocouple were given on the basis of the obtained experimental results.

  • This study was performed to test the combustive properties of Pinus rigida-based materials by the treatment of ammonium salts. Pinus rigida plate was soaked in three 20 wt% ammonium salt solutions such as ammonium sulfate (AMSF), monoammonium phosphate (MAPP), and diammonium phosphate (DAPP), respectively, at the room temperature. After drying specimen treated with chemicals, combustive properties were examined by the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). Comparing with virgin pinus rigida plate, specimens treated with the ammonium salts had lower combustive properties and It is supposed that the combustion-retardation properties improved due to the treated ammonium salts in the virgin Pinus rigida. Also, the specimens with treated ammonium salts showed both the lower peak heat release rate (PHRR) and lower total heat release (THR) than those of virgin plate.
