  • There exist two interesting phenomena in making seafood products from surimi. When salted surimi is kept at a constant low temperature $(4\~40^{\circ}C)$, its rheological properties change from sol to gel, which is called 'setting'. Seafood processors can exploit changes that occur during setting in preparation of surimibased products, because heating at high temperatures, after the pre-heating during the setting process, enhances the gel-strength of salted surimi. Contrarily, when salted surimi or low-temperature set gel is heated at moderate temperatures $(50\~70^{\circ}C)$, a deterioration of gel is observed. The phenomenon is termed 'modori'. In the modori temperature range, heat-stable cysteine proteinases such as cathepsin B, H, Land L-Iike hydrolyze the myosins responsible for gel-formation, resulting in gel weakening modori. This article reviews molecular events occurring during gel setting that improve the quality of surimi-based products, and inhibition of modori by applying proteinase inhibitors. Application of recombinant protein technology to surimi-based products is introduced and its prospects for practical use are discussed.

  • Cold weather can lead to many problems in mixing, placing, setting time, and curing of concrete that can have harmful effects on its properties and service life. Korean Concrete Institute (KCI) defines cold weather as a period when the average daily air temperature is less $4^{\circ}C$ and recommends to cast concrete with special care such as shielding, heating and so on. The use of high early strength cements may improve the rate of hardening characteristics of concrete in cold weather by making it possible to achieve faster setting time and evolving more hydration heat than ordinary Portland cement. Higher early strength can be achieved using Type III cement especially during the first 7 days. The strength increase property of Type III cement at low temperature was studied. As a conclusion the heat or heat insulation curing period can be reduced to 50~75%. So, it can be used for cold weather concreting to reduce construction cost and extend the construction season.

  • This study is about an analysis of surplus solar energy by important greenhouse types as well as setting temperature different by using Typical Meteorological Year data which was secured in order to provide basic data for designing an optimum thermal storage system to accumulate surplus solar energy generating in greenhouses during the daytime. Depending on the setting temperatures of $15{\sim}19^{\circ}C$ for greenhouse heating during day and night, surplus heat amounts were varied at the rate of about $0.2{\sim}6.9%/4^{\circ}C$ with some variations according to the greenhouse types and regions. On the other hand, the variations of supplemental heat requirements were about $29.7{\sim}50.0%/4^{\circ}C$. Depending on the setting temperatures for greenhouse ventilations(low $25{\sim}29^{\circ}C$ and high $27{\sim}31^{\circ}C$), surplus heat amounts were varied at the rate of about $-9.9{\sim}-35.6%/4^{\circ}C$ in auto-type greenhouse. But in single-type greenhouses, they were about $-5.1{\sim}-13.4%/4^{\circ}C$. There were not significant changes in supplemental heat amounts depending on setting temperatures of ventilation for both greenhouse types and regions.

  • In this study, the compact type solar thermal and ground coupled heat pump hybrid system for space heating/cooling and hot water supply has been developed. This hybrid system was installed in Zero Energy Solar House(ZeSH) in KIER for the demonstration. The thermal performance and operational characteristics of this hybrid system were analysed especially. The results are as follows. (1) This hybrid system was designed in order to address the existing disadvantages of solar thermal/ground coupled heat pump system. For this design, all parts except solar collector and ground coupled heat pump were integrated into a single product in a factory. The compact type unit includes two buffer tanks, an expansion tank, pumps, valves, a controller, etc. This system has an advantage of easy installation with simple plumbing work even in narrow space. (2) The thermal charging and discharging time of the buffer tanks and its characteristics by ground coupled heat pump, and heat pump COP according to geo-source temperature and buffer storage temperature have been studied. This system was found to meet well to the heat load without any other auxiliary heating equipment. (3) The operating hours of the ground coupled heat pump as a backup device of solar thermal can be reduced significantly by using solar heat. It was also found that the minimum heating water supply setting temperature and maximum cooling water supply setting temperature make an influence on the heat pump COP. The lower heating water and the higher cooling water temperature, the higher COP. In this respect, the hybrid system's performance can be improved in ZeSH than conventional house.

  • The so called setting is defined as the onset of rigidity in fresh concrete. In the analysis of the early-age concrete behavior, we consider fresh concrete as a structural element immediately after mixing. But for the activation of real structural behavior of fresh concrete, it takes some time after the beginning of hydration reaction. So, the very early age deformations due to hydration heat and shrinkage which occur before the setting do not produce restraint stresses. In this paper, we propose a setting characteristic model based on the so called percolation theory. From the analysis using the model, the influence of curing temperature is investigated and analytical results are compared with experimental results. From the comparison, the validity of proposed model is verified. This model is also applied to evaluate stress development in a temperature-stress test machine (TSTM) specimen and then the effect of setting time on the stress development is discussed.

  • According to the recent tendency that the buildings in the downtown concerning rising land prices and efficient use of building are gradually Manhattanized mainly the grand scaled residential buildings, structure of the buildings relates to safety and so the very thick mat concrete is selected as the foundation of architectures. Because mat concretes can not be simultaneously pour in a great quantity due to the circumstance at the field, not only the questions on the unification between the concretes pour on the upper layer and the lower layer are presented but also the cracks by the internal force from the difference of hydration exothermic period are occurred because of the time lag. Thus, this study checked the efficiency to apply "The hydration heat controlling method of mass concrete for horizontal partition pouring construction" to the skyscraper sites under construction at Haiundai in Busan. After applying this method, the result of observation that the cracks by hydration heat in all over the placement surface did never be founded. Also, in case of the economic analysis that the hydration heat reduction method using super retarding agent by difference of setting time is approximately 80% cheaper than the hydration heat reduction method by pipe cooling in the construction expenses.

  • The addition of a limestone filler(LF) to fill into the voids between cement and aggregate particles can reduce the cementitious paste volume. This paper aim to evaluate the influence of LF contents on the hydration kinetics and compressive strength. Hydration kinetics were evaluate using heat of hydration, ignition loss and thermal analysis. The heat of hydration was measured using Isothermal Calorimetry. The degree of hydration was measured using ignition loss. Hydration product analysis was carried out by Thermal Gravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis. The results show that the addition of LF reduces not only the initial setting time and heat of hydration peak, also degree of hydration and rate of strength development at early age increase with the addition of LF. It can be concluded the LF fills the pore between cement particles due to formation of carboaluminate, which may accelerate the setting of cement pastes.

  • In this study, experiments of welding deformation considering dog-pieces setting were performed to assess the effect of dog-pieces on welding deformations quantitatively and an analysis method of welding deformations considering dog-pieces was proposed. Experimental results show the relationship between welding deformations and dog-pieces setting quantitatively. The maximum reduction of welding deformation was measured as 74%. The proposed numerical analysis method to predict welding deformations is one of thermal elasto-plastic analyses using a circular heat flux and finite elements model and has been verified through experiments of welding deformation. The proposed analysis method is expected to be used in a variety of fields as an analysis tool to assess or establish guidelines for a proper use of dog-pieces.
