A brief overview is given of the development of various structural steels and their welding application technology. Firstly, the general characteristics and welding performance of structural steels used in architecture and bridge are introduced. For safety against earthquakes or strong wind, and for highly efficient welding in high-rise building constructions, ultra high strength steel with tensile strength over 800 MPa or high HAZ toughness steel plates under high heat input welding have been developed. In particular, efficient welding technology ensuring high resistance to cold and hot cracking of ultra high strength steel is reviewed in the present paper. Secondly, various coated steels used mainly for outer part in construction are briefly discussed. Moreover, a major drawback of coated steel during welding operation, and several solutions to overcome such technical problem are proposed. It is hoped that this review paper can lead to significant academic contributions and provide readers interested in the structural steels with useful welding technology.
High temperature deformation behavior of a heat-resistant duplex stainless steel, used as a retort in the Pidgeon process for Mg production, was investigated in this study. 25Cr-8Ni based duplex stainless steels were cast into rectangular ingots, with dimensions of $350mm{\times}350mm{\times}100mm$. Nitrogen and yttrium were added at 0.3wt.% each to enhance the heat-resistance of the steel. Phase equilibrium was calculated using the thermodynamic software FactSage$^{(R)}$ and the database of FSStel. For comparison, cast 310S steel, a widely used heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel, was also examined in this study. Dilatometry was conducted on the as-cast ingots for the temperature range from RT to $1200^{\circ}C$ and the thermal expansion coefficients were evaluated. The nitrogen addition was found to have an effect on the thermal expansion behavior for temperatures between 800 and $1000^{\circ}C$. High temperature tensile and compression tests were conducted on the ingots for temperatures ranging from 900 to $1230^{\circ}C$, which is the operation temperature employed in Mg production by the Silico-thermic reduction process. The steel containing both N and Y showed much higher strength as compared to 310S.
The current study was conducted to elucidate the effect of cementite morphology and matrix-ferrite microstructure on sliding wear behavior in spheroidized high carbon (1wt. % C) steel. The high carbon steel was initially heat treated to obtain a full pearlite or a martensite microstructure before the spheroidization. The spheroidizing heat treatment was performed on the full pearlitic steel for 100 hours at 700℃ and tempering was performed on the martensitic steel for 3 hours at 650℃. A spheroidized cementite phase in a ferrite matrix was obtained for both the full pearlite and the martensite microstructures. Sliding wear tests were conducted using a pin-on-disk wear tester with the heat treated steel as the disk specimen. An alumina(Al2O3) ball was used as the pin counterpart during the test. After the spheroidizing heat treatment and the tempering, both pearlite and martensite exhibited similar microstructures of spheroidized cementite in a ferrite matrix. The spheroidized pearlite specimens had lower hardness than the tempered martensite; however, the wear resistance of the spheroidized pearlite was superior to that of the tempered martensite.

The main objective of this paper is to study the behaviour of yLRC composite columns at elevated temperatures by experimental test. The effects of load ratios, cross-section size and fire protection for the yLRC columns were investigate d by the test and compared using the heat transfer analysis perfo rmed based on the finite element program ANSYS 10.0 using the ISO834 standard fire curve, following the main guidelines proposed by the EC4 Part 1.2. As heat transfer is the movement of heat by conduction, convection, and radiation, and as temperature inside an object varies by position and time, time. As the steel's thermal conductivity is higher than that of concrete, steel loses its strength rapidly in a high-temperature situation such as a fire. Fire resistance performance of the yLRC composite column under fire conditions was evaluated througheat transfer analysis for parametric study.
The cathodic protection method is being widely used in marine structural steel, however a high tensile steel like RE 36 steel for marine structural steel is easy to get hydrogen embrittlement due to over protection during cathodic protection as well as preferential corrosion of HAZ(Heating Affected Zone) part. In this paper, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties such as elongation and hydrogen embrittlement were investigated with not only in terms of electrochemical view but also SSRT(Slow Strain Rate Test) method with applied constant cathodic potential, analysis of SEM fractography in case of both As-welded and PWHT(Post-Weld Heat Treatment) of $550^{\circ}C$. The best effect for corrosion resistance was apparently indicated at PWHT of $550^{\circ}C$ and elongation was increased with PWHT of $550^{\circ}C$ than that of As-welded condition. On the other hand. Elongation was decreased with applied potential shifting to low potential direction which may be caused by hydrogen embrittlement, however the susceptibility of hydrogen embrittlement was decreased with PWHT of $550^{\circ}C$ than that of As-welded condition and Q.C(quasi cleavage) fracture mode was also observed significantly according to increasing of susceptibility of hydrogen embrittlement. Eventually it is suggested that an optimum cathodic protection potential range not causing hydrogen embrittlernent is from -770 mV(SCE) to -850 mV(SCE) in As-welded condition while is from -770 mV(SCE) to -875 mV(SCE) in PWHT of $550^{\circ}C$.
Variations in the microstructure and mechanical properties of API X70 steel processed by piping, electrical resistance welding (ERW), and post seam annealing (PSA) are investigated in this study. In the welding zone, some elongated pearlites are formed and grains coarsening occurs due to extra heat caused by the ERW and PSA processes. After the piping, the base metal shows continuous yielding behavior and a decrease in yield and impact strengths because mobile dislocation and back stress are introduced during the piping process. On the other hand, the ERW and PSA processes additionally decreased the impact strength of welding zone at room and low temperatures because some elongated pearlites easily act as crack initiation site and coarse ferrite grains facilitate crack propagation. As a result, the fracture surface of the welding zone specimen tested at low temperature revealed mostly cleavage fracture unlike the base metal specimen.
High alloyed stainless steels stand out for a high corrosion resistance due to a protective passive layer which is formed when the content of chromium exceeds 13%. When welding these steels, heat tints arise in the area of the weldment. They may occur from flint yellow to intensive blue in the spectrum depending on the applied welding process and the quality of the backing gas used. Due to their structures, they partly drastically reduce the corrosion resistance of stainless steels so that they may lead to damages of the technical application of welded components. In the following the pitting resistance by different backing gases and the chemical composition of the stainless steel itself are described.
After changing the heat treating atmosphere of nitrogen gas, argon gas and vacuum, the nitrogen contents, microstructural changes, hardness and corrosion resistance of 0.25wt.%N alloyed super duplex stainless steel have been investigated in the temperature range from $1050^{\circ}C$ to $1350^{\circ}C$. The nitrogen content showed to be increased up to 0.36wt.% after heat treating the specimen in nitrogen gas at $1200^{\circ}C$, while the decrement of nitrogen content in vacuum atmosphere was shown down to 0.03wt.% at $1350^{\circ}C$. After heat treating in the mixed gas atmosphere of argon and nitrogen at $1250^{\circ}C$, the surface ${\gamma}$ phase existed as ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase increased with increasing nitrogen gas content. The ${\gamma}$ single phase appeared at the surface above $80%N_2$ gas, while the surface ${\alpha}$ single phase was shown below $20%N_2$ gas. When heat treating the specimen in nitrogen gas at $1050^{\circ}C$, the hardness of austenite phases increased above Hv 40 at the surface layer compared to the hardness of the core parts, while decrement of denitriding effect caused to the hardness nearly unchanged between surface and the core parts after heat treating in vacuum atmosphere. The surface ${\gamma}$ single phase specimen showed superior corrosion resistance than the surface ${\alpha}$ single phase specimen. The surface ${\alpha}$ phase existed in the ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ microstructure showed higher corrosion resistance after heat treating in the nitrogen gas atmosphere than the ${\alpha}$ phase heat treated in the argon gas and vacuum atmosphere.
An attractive combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in the temperature range -50 to $250^{\circ}C$ is offered by duplex stainless steel. However, undesirable secondary precipitation phase such as $\sigma$, $\gamma_2$ and $Cr_2N$ may taken place at the cooling stage from the welding processes. Therefore, this paper describes the influence of different welding procedures such as manual metal arc welding (MMA), tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) and vacuum brazing on corrosion resistance of the welded joint for UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel. Microstructure and chemical compositions of the welded joint were examined. The weight loss of specimens immersed in 6% $FeCl_3$ solution at $47.5^{\circ}C$ for 24-hours was determined and used to evaluate the pitting resistance of duplex stainless steel and their welds. The region of heat-affected zone of specimen obtained by the MMA is much wider than that resulted from TIG, therefore, the weight loss of welds by MMA was larger than that of weld by TIG. The weight loss of brazed specimens cooled from slow cooling rate was larger than those of specimens cooled from high cooling rate, because the precipitation of $\sigma$ phase. Beside that, the weight loss of brazed specimen is greater than those of the welded specimens. The galvanic corrosion was observed in brazed duplex stainless steel joints in the chloride solution.
Aluminum alloys have been widely used in engine materials, cold & hot-water storage vessels and piping etc., Furthermore, the aluminum alloy of AC8A have been widely used in mold casting material of engine piston for various vehicles because of its properties of temperature, wear and corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is considered that evaluation of corrosion resistance as well as wear resistance of AC8A material is also important to improve its property and to prolong its lifetime. In previous paper, the effect of solution($510^{\circ}C$:4hrs) and tempering($190^{\circ}C$: 16, 24, and 36 hrs)heat treatments to corrosion resistance and hardness were investigated using electrochemical method. In this study, in order to examine completely the effect of the tempering hours to hardness variation and corrosion resistance, the results of solution($510^{\circ}C$:4hrs) and tempering($190^{\circ}C$: 2, 4, 8 and 12hrs)heat treatments to hardness and corrosion resistance were investigated using electrochemical method. The hardness decreased with solution heat treatment compared to mold casting condition, but its value increased with tempering heat treatment. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance increased with decreasing of the hardness, and decreased with increasing of the hardness reversely. And the tempering heat treatment temperature at $190^{\circ}C$ for 8 hrs exhibited the highest value of the hardness and also indicated the highest corrosion current density. However, the values of hardness and corrosion current density was again increasingly decreased with increasing of tempering hours than 8 hrs, Consequently, it is suggested that decision of the optimum. tempering hours is very important to improve the corrosion or wear resistance.
