This study has been performed to investigate the thermal performance of variable conductance heat pipe (VCHP) with meshed wick. The length of condenser portion in a VCHP is varied by the expansion of inert gas with the operation temperature, and the heat transport capacity is thus varied with the operating temperature. In this study, numerical evaluation of the VCHP is made for the thermal performance of VCHP, based on the diffusion model of inert gas. Water is used as a working fluid and nitrogen as a control inert gas in the copper tube. As a result, the thermal performance of VCHP has been compared with that of constant conductance heat pipe (CCHP) according to the variation of operation temperature. Maximum heat transport capacity of VCHP is mainly presented for operation temperature and the variation of operation temperature is also presented for heat transfer rate of VCHP.
Flame structure and extinction mechanism of counterflow methane/air non-premixed flame diluted with nitrogen are studied by NASA 2.2 s drop tower experiments and two-dimensional numerical simulations with finite rate chemistry and transport properties. Extinction mechanism at low strain rate is examined through the comparison among results of microgravity experiment, 1D and 2D simulations with a finite burner diameter. A two-dimensional simulation in counterflow flame especially with a finite burner diameter is shown to be very important in explaining the importance of multidimensional effects and lateral heat loss in flame extinction, effects that cannot be understood using a one-dimensional flamelet model. Extinction mechanism at low strain rate is quite different from that at high strain rate. Low strain rate flame is extinguished initially at the outer flame edge, the flame shrinks inward, and finally is extinguished at the center. It is clarified from the overall fractional contribution by each term in energy equation to heat release rate that the contribution of radiation fraction with 1D and 2D simulations does not change so much and the overall fractional contribution is decisively attributed to radial conduction ('lateral heat loss'). The experiments by Maruta et at. can be only completely understood if multi-dimensional heat loss effects are considered. It is, as a result, verified that the turning point, which is caused only by pure radiation heat loss, has to be shifted towards much lower global strain rate in microgravity flame.

The objective of the present study was to perform failure analysis of double-layered bellow (expansion joint), a core part of stress reliever, used to relieve axial stresses induced by thermal expansion of heat-transport pipes in a district heating system. The bellow underwent tensile or compressive stresses due to its structure in terms of position. A leaked position sufferred a fatigue with a tensile component for decades. A cracked bellow contained a higher fraction of martensitic phase because of manufacturing and usage histories, which induced more brittleness on the component. Inclusions in the inner layer of the bellow acted as a site of stress concentration, from which cracks initiated and then propagated along the hoop direction from the inner surface of the inner layer under fatigue loading conditions. As the crack reached critical thickness, the crack propagated to the outer surface at a higher rate, resulting in leakage of the stress reliever.
This paper has been carried out to investigate heat transfer characteristics of loop type capillary heat pipe using R141b as a working fluid. In an experiment heat load are changed from 50W to 250W and the temperature of cooling water is fixed to 20$^{circ}C$ . The heat pipe is composed of 10 turns and outer diameter of heat pipe is 3.2mm. The results show that heat transport rate of this type heat pipe using R141b as a working fluid is good.
LNG carrier is a special-purpose vessel to transport natural gas (NG) from the place of origin to each consuming country. To increase the capacity of canying LNG carrier, the natural gas is conveyed as a state of liquid called LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) during a voyage because the total volume of NG is surprisingly reduced when it is cooled down to $-162^{\circ}C$. That is why the design of insulation of the carriers is important to protect LNG from the external heat invasion, and it has been a great challenging subject for several decades in the shipbuilding industry. For this ultimate goal, the boil-off rate (BOR) needs to be accurately estimated during a voyage. Therefore, the goal of this study is to propose a numerical method for estimating the BOR of LNG for given insulation containment subject to external temperature conditions during voyage.
This study investigates the heat and mass transfer characteristics of a MoS2 nanoparticle suspension in ethylene glycol over a porous stretching sheet. MoS2 nanoparticles are known for their exceptional thermal and chemical stability which makes it convenient for enhancing the energy and mass transport properties of base fluids. Ethylene glycol, a common coolant in various industrial applications is utilized as the suspending medium due to its superior heat transfer properties. The effects of variable thermal conductivity, variable mass diffusivity, thermal radiation and thermophoresis which are crucial parameters in affecting the transport phenomena of nanofluids are taken into consideration. The governing partial differential equations representing the conservation of momentum, energy, and concentration are reduced to a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using appropriate similarity transformations. R software and MATLAB-bvp5c are used to compute the solutions. The impact of key parameters, including the nanoparticle volume fraction, magnetic field, Prandtl number, and thermophoresis parameter on the flow, heat and mass transfer rates is systematically examined. The study reveals that the presence of MoS2 nanoparticles curbs the friction between the fluid and the solid boundary. Moreover, the variable thermal conductivity controls the rate of heat transfer and variable mass diffusivity regulates the rate of mass transfer. The numerical and statistical results computed are mutually justified via tables. The results obtained from this investigation provide valuable insights into the design and optimization of systems involving nanofluid-based heat and mass transfer processes, such as solar collectors, chemical reactors, and heat exchangers. Furthermore, the findings contribute to a deeper understanding of stretching sheet systems, such as in manufacturing processes involving continuous casting or polymer film production. The incorporation of MoS2-C2H6O2 nanofluids can potentially optimize temperature distribution and fluid dynamics.
A numerical simulation of velocity and temperature fields and Nusselt number distributions is performed by using the algebraic stress model (ASM) for the velocity profiles and low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and the algebraic heat flux model(AHFM) for turbulent heat transfer in a $180^{\circ}$ bend with a constant wall heat flux. In the low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model, turbulent Prandtl number is modified by considering the streamline curvature effect and the non-equilibrium effect between turbulent kinetic energy production and dissipation rate. Every heat flux term presented in the transport equation of turbulent heat flux is reduced to algebraic expressions in a way similar to algebraic stress model. Also. in the wall region, low Reynods number algebraic heat flux model(AHFM) is applied.
Numerical analyses have been carried out to analyze the three-dimensional turbulent heat transfer by impingement jet on a concave surface with variation of geometric configurations. Three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-stokes equations have been calculated using the shear stress transport turbulent model. The numerical results for heat transfer rate were validated in comparison with the experimental data. The distance between jet nozzles and angle of inclined jet nozzle were selected as the geometric variables. Area-averaged Nusselt numbers on concave surface are evaluated to find the characteristics of heat transfer with the two geometric variables. The heat transfer increases as the distance between jet nozzles increases, and the inclined impinging jets show much better heat transfer performance than the vertical impinging jet.
In this study, analysis is made for the effects of groove shape on the thermal performance of a axial groove heat pipe. The mathematical models of two-phase flow in grooved heat pipe are presented for the capillary limitation in steady state. Generally, the heat pipe performance depends on the capillary pressure and liquid flow. The friction force of liquid flow through the groove increases with the groove width decreased, and then the capillary pressure is improved in the gas-liquid interface of groove. Therefore, the optimal groove width shaper exists for the maximum thermal performance of heat pipe. In this paper, the optimal groove shape and scale are presented by considering both capillary pressure and liquid flow.
This work presents a numerical procedure to optimize the elliptic-shaped pin fin arrays to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Four variables including major axis length, minor axis length, pitch and the pin fin length nondimensionalized by duct height are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. D-optimal design is used to reduce the data points, and, with only 28 points, reliable response surface is obtained. Optimum shapes of the pin-fin arrays have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.
