  • The phenomena of energy separation in vortex tubes was investigated experimentally to see the effects of the conductivity of a tube and convective heat transfer on the outer surface of a tube. The experiment was carried out with different conductivity (pyrex, stainless steel and copper) of a tube and three kinds of convective heat transfer modes (adiabatic condition, natural convection (air) and forced convection (water) on the outer surface of a tube. the results were obtained that hot exit fluid temperature was highly affected by a change of conductivity of a tube when the outer surface was cooled by the forced convection of water. However, the cold exit temperature was little affected by heat transfer modes on the outer surface in vortex tubes.

  • Fouling is very serious problem in heat exchanger because it rapidly deteriorates the performance of heat exchanger. Cross-flow heat exchanger with vortex generators is developed, which enhance heat transfer and reduce fouling. In the present heat exchanger, shell and baffle are removed from the conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger. The naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to measure the local heat transfer coefficients. The experiments are performed for single circular tube, staggered array tube bank and in-line array tube bank with and without vortex generators. Local and average Nusselt numbers of single tube and tube bank with vortex generator are investigated and compared to those of without vortex generator.

  • Air side heat transfer and pressure drop for fin-tube heat exchanger with wave and wave-slit fins were measured for various fin spacings and number of tube rows. Outer diameter of the tube including fin collar is 10.07mm, and experiments were done with dry surface condition. Longitudinal and transverse tube spacings of the heat exchangers are 21.65mm and 25mm respectively, and wave depth of the wave fin is 2mm. Experiments were conducted for 1, 2 and 3 rows and 3 different fin spacings, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7mm. An attempt was made to demonstrate advantage of the enhanced fins over the plane fin by introducing the concept of fan power, Effect of the number of tube rows on heat transfer was discussed in connection with general mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement for fin-tube heat exchanger. Also the effect of hydrophilic coating was investigated. Lastly, correlations for Colburn j-factor and friction factor were developed.

  • An experimental study on the air-side pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient of slit fin-tube heat exchanger has been carried out. The data reduction methodology for air-side heat transfer coefficients in the literature is not based on a consistent approach. This paper focuses on new method of data reduction to obtain the air-side performance of fin-tube heat exchanger using R22 and recommends standard procedures for dry and wet surface heat transfer estimation in fin-tube heat exchanger having refrigerant on the tube-side. Results are presented as plots of friction f-factor and Colburn j -factor against Reynolds number based on the fin collar outside diameter and compared with previous studies. The data covers a range of refrigerant mass fluxes of 150∼250 kg/$m^2$s with air flows at velocity ranges from 0.3 m/s to 0.8 m/s.

  • An experiment was carried out to evaluate the heat transfer and pressure drop performances of the smooth tube and two augmented tubes using R-113 under horizontal condensation condition. The augmented tubes are a spirally-twisted tube and an internally-finned tube. The test tube is 13.88 mm in diameter and 3.2 m long. Five different inlet pressure of 0.13, 0.16, 0.18, 0.21 and 0.23 MPa were employed and the mass flux was varied from 80 to 265 $kg/m^{2}s.$ The results showed that the overall heat transfer coefficient for the spirally-twisted tube and internally-finned tube were enhanced by 30-85% and 130-180%, respectively, over that for the smooth tube. The increase in total pressure drop for the spirally-twisted tube and internally-finned tube were reached up to 250-350% and 1100-1600%, respectively, over that for the smooth tube. Correlations were proposed for predicting the condensation heat transfer coefficient for the smooth tube and two augmented tubes.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a multi-tube inserted impinging jet. Four different multi-tube devices are tested for various nozzle-to-plate distance. Flow visualization by smoke-wire method and velocity measurements using a hot-wire anemometer are applied to analyze the flow characteristics of the multi-tube insert impinging jet. The local heat transfer coefficients of the multi-tube inserted impinging jet on the impingement surface are measured and the results are compared to those of the conventional jet. In multi-tube inserted system the multi-tube length plays an important role in the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the jet flow. With multi-tube insert of I3d4 and I6d4 which has relatively longer tube length than the multi-tube-exit of I3d1 and I6d1, the flow maintains its increased velocity far downstream due to interaction between adjacent flows. For the small H/D of 4, the local heat transfer coefficients of multi-tube inserted impinging jet are much higher than those of the conventional jet because the flow has higher velocity and turbulent intensity by the use of the multi-tube device. At large gap distance of H/D=12, also higher heat transfer rates are obtained by installing multi-tube insert except multi-tube insert of I3d1.

  • In a conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger, fluid contacts with tubes flowing up and down in a shell, therefore there is a defect in the heat transfer with tubes due to the stagnation portions . Fins are attached to the tubes in order to increase heat transfer efficiency, but there exists a limit. Therefore, it is necessary to improve heat exchanger performance by changing the fluid flow in the shell. In this study, a highly efficient shell-and-tube heat exchanger with spiral baffle plates is simulated three-dimensionally using a commercial thermal-fluid analysis code, CFX4.2. In this type of heat exchanger, fluid contacts with tubes flowing rotationally in the shell. It could improve heat exchanger performance considerably because stagnation portions in the shell could be removed. It is proved that the shell-and-tube heat exchanger with spiral baffle plates is superior to the conventional heat exchanger in terms of heat transfer.

  • Heat transfer performances of individual row of two-row fin and tube heat exchangers are experimentally investigated. Tested are four heat exchangers which are geometrically identical with the exception of fin shape, slit or louver, and that the fins between the first row and the second row are connected or separated. The tube diameter and fin spacing of the heat exchangers examined are 7mm and 1.4mm, respectively. All thermal fluid measurements are made using a psychrometric calorimeter. In order to evaluate air-side heat transfer coefficients of individual rows, tube-side water flow rates of individual rows are independently controlled such that the water-side temperature drops in each row remain at $5^{\circ}C$. Frontal air velocity varies in the range from 0.7m/s to 2.5m/s. Heat transfer coefficients are presented in terms of Colburn ${\jmath}-factor$. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of the upstream row is larger than that for the downstream row at low Reynolds numbers.

  • This research was concerned with the enhancement of heat transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different horizontal tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes were a bare tube, floral tube and hydrophilic tube. The additive mass concentration was about 0.05${\sim}$5.5%. The heat transfer coefficient was measured as a function of solution flow rate for the range of 0.01${\sim}$0.034 kg/ms. The experimental results were compared with cases without surfactant. The enhancement of heat transfer by Marangoni convection effect generated by the addition of the surfactant is observed in each test tube. The increase of heat transfer coefficient by surfactant addition is about 35${\sim}$90% for bare tube, 40${\sim}$70% for the floral tube, 30${\sim}$50% for the hydrophilic tube and was higher for the cases with smaller a little solution flow rates.
