  • Theoretical and numerical study on heat transfer and evaporation in the vertical channel has been carried out and basic correlations have been derived for the heat transfer evaluation of PCCS. Analysis program was developed with low-Reynolds-number k-$\varepsilon$ model and surface transfer rates were calculated for the turbulent natural convection in the vertical channel. In relation to dry cooling by buoyancy-driven air, first, the system parameters which govern overall heat transfer rate are determined through the adequate nondimensionalization procedure. After comparison with existing experimental data, numerical results are used to derive heat transfer correlation by sensitivity calculations. In relation to wet cooling by falling water film, numerical analysis are carried out for evaporation process with real film surface conditions and evaporation correlation is derived through analogy concept and correction factors.

  • The natural convection heat transfer and solidification in a stratified pool are studied. The flow and heat transfer characteristics in a heat generating pool are compared between single-layered and double-layered pools. And local Nusselt number distributions on outer walls are obtained to consider thermal loads on a vessel wall. The cooling and solidification of Al₂O₃/Fe melt in a hemispherical vessel are simulated to study the mechanism of heat transfer and temperature distribution. A unstructured mesh is chosen for this study because of the non-orthogonality originated from the boundaries of double-layered pool. Interface between the layers is modeled to be fixed. With this assumption mass flux across the interface is neglected, but shear force and heat flux are considered by boundary conditions. The colocated cell-centered finite volume method is used with the Rhie-Chow interpolation to compute cell face velocity. To prevent non-physical solutions near walls in case body force is large the wall pressure is extrapolated by the way to include body force. The numerical solutions calculated by current method show that averaged downward heat flux of the double-layered pool increases compared to single-layered pool and maximum temperature occurs right below the interface of the layers.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of $CO_{2}$ on heat transfer from hydrogen oxygen-enriched flame. Experiments were performed on flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which mounted on top of the furnace. Five composition conditions of oxidizer were chosen with replacing $N_{2}$ with $CO_{2}$. In a steady state, total and radiative heat flux rates from the flame to the wall of furnace has been measured using heat flux meters. Temperature distribution in furnace also has been checked. Increasing $CO_{2}$ ratio in the oxidizer, the dominant heat transfer mode was changed into convection from radiation. Temperature in the furnace decreased but total heat flux increased.

  • Natural convection heat transfer in a rectangular enclosure is investigated numerically for low aspect ratio(height/width) cavities. Numerical results are obtained for aspect ratios between ${10}^{-2}$ and ${10}^0$, Rayleight numbers from ${10}^3$ to ${10}^7$ and Prandtl numbers from 10$^{-2}$ to 10$^3$. Results are compared with existing analytical and experimental results. A heat transfer correlation is developed to predict the mean Nusselt number as a function of the three governing dimensionless parameters: Rayleigh number, aspect ratio and Prandtl number.

  • Temperature distribution measurements in the mockup apparatus of reactor vessel were performed to determine the effective thermal conductivity of porous media with different geometry and to obtain the experimental data for the heat transfer processes by natural convection occurring in the air duct. The temperature distributions at four separated sections with different arrangements of porous media have different slopes according to the geometrical configuration. From the measured temperature distribution, effective thermal conductivity have been derived using the least square fitting method. The test at air duct was performed to the high heat removal at 3.4kW/$m^2$ by the natural convection from the outer wall to the air. And also the temperature distributions in the air duct agree well with the 1/7th power-law turbulent temperature distribution. The obtained heat transfer data have been compared with the Shin's and Sieger's correlations.

  • The effect of concave curvature on the natural convection has been numerically studied using the higher-order finite difference method. The heating wall in a enclosure is approximated by a cosine function. The heat transfer coefficient is analyzed for three Rayleigh numbers and five amplitudes. For Ra = 10/sup 8/ the separation and reattachment are observed on the adiabatic walls. The wall heat transfer are slightly changed by the increasing curvatures.

  • This computational study examines the augmentation of classic 2-D Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ convection by the addition of periodically-spaced transverse fins. The fins are attached to the heated base of the cavity and serve to partition the cavity into 'units' with different aspect ratios. The respective impacts upon heat transfer of the fin configuration parameters - including spacing, height, thickness and thermal conductivity - are systematically examined through numerical simulations for a range of laminar Rayleigh numbers (0 < Ra < $2{\times}10^5$) and reported in terms of an average Nusselt number. The selection of the low Rayleigh number regime is linked to likely scenarios within aerospace applications (e.g. avionics cooling) where the cavity length scale and/or gravitational acceleration is small. The net heat transfer augmentation is found to result from a combination of competing fin effects, most of which are hydrodynamic in nature. Heat transfer enhancement of up to $1.2{\times}$ that for a Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ cavity without fins was found to occur under favorable fin configurations. Such configurations are generally characterized by short, thin fins with half-spacings somewhat less than the convection cell diameter from classic Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ theory. In contrast, for unfavorable configurations, it is found that the introduction of fins can result in a significant reduction in the heat transfer performance.

  • The interaction of turbulent mixed convection and surface radiation in a three-dimensional channel with the heated blocks is analyzed numerically. Two blocks are maintained at high temperature and the other bottom and horizontal walls are insulated. S-4 method is employed to calculate the effect of the radiative heat transfer. The low Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model proposed by Launder and Sharma is used to estimate the turbulent influence on the heat transfer enhancement. From above modeling, the effects of various channel specifications on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are investigated. The variables used for the present study are Reynolds number, block spacing, the channel height spacing for block and the emissivity. Average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are correlated and presented in terms of Reynolds number, emissivity and dimensionless geometric parameters. For the range of conditions in this study, average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are strongly influenced by the Reynolds numbers and channel height spacing for block but weakly influenced by the block spacing and the emissivity of the adiabatic walls.

  • The influence of the surface roughness on the natural convection heat transfers of a vertical plate were measured experimently. Mass transfer experiments instead of heat transfer experiment were performed based on the analogy. The piecewise electrodes were adopted to measure the local-average Nusselt number. Prandtl number was 2,014 and height of the plate was 0.154m The test results for a smooth surface showed similar heat transfer rate with the Le Fevre heat transfer correlation for a vertical plate. The Nusselt number increased with the roughness Rz $0.5{\sim}14.1{\mu}m$. The test results were presented by a simple correlation.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the flow resistances and heat transfer characteristics of V-shaped circular fin-tube heat exchangers. Four types of V-shaped fins in which the fin areas are identical but the areas of the V-shaped portion are different have been tested numerically. The results obtained for heat transfer, pressure drop, and fin temperature are discussed in this paper. With increase in the area of the V-shaped portion, the pressure drop and heat transfer increase up to 40% and 24%, respectively, in the present test range.
