Single phase heat transfer coefficients were measured for turbulent water flow in a micro-fin tube by using Wilson plot technique. An experiment for counterflow heat exchange between the micro-fin tube and its outer annulus passage was performed. The annulus side heat transfer resistance was varied and the overall heat transfer coefficients were measured. The single-phase heat transfer coefficients in a micro-fin tube were obtained by Wilson plot technique. Nusselt numbers based on the real heat transfer area and the nominal area were about 35% and 50% larger than those for smooth tube respectively Also, single-phase heat transfer correlations based on real heat transfer area and nominal area have been proposed for a micro-fin tube.
Experiments were carried out to study the heat transfer characteristics of a disrober for 150 RT LiBr-water absorption heat pump. An experimental apparatus was divided into four sections, a combustion chamber area, two bare-tube areas, and finally a finned-tube area to quantify the heat transfer rate of each section by measuring the generation rate of vapor. Dividing plates was installed at the upper inside part of deserter to prohibit the moving of vapor generated at heating tubes of a section to another section near. In the first bare-tube area, the generation rate of vapor was the largest among the four sections. The finned-tube area only contributed to give sensible heat increase of solution to the saturation temperature. The heat transfer area of the finned-tube area was 52.2%, which absorbed only 9.2% of the total heat from the combustion gas. On the contrary, the heat transfer area of the first bare-tube area was 16.6%, but it absorbed 52.4% of the total absorbed heat. The temperature of the solution at upper part at the finned-tube area was lower than that of the lower part, because weak solution came in upper part of the finned-tube area. But, this tendency was changed at the first and second bare-tube area due to the vigorous heat transfer and fluid flow enhanced by vapor generation through heating tubes. The overall heat transfer coefficient and heat flux were the largest at the first bare-tube area among the other sections.
To investigate effects of the inflow area on pool boiling heat transfer in a vertical annulus, the inflow area at its bottom has been changed from 0 to $1060.3mm^2$. For the test, a heated tube of 34 mm diameter and water at atmospheric pressure have been used. To elucidate effects of the inflow area on heat transfer results of the annulus are compared to the data of a single unrestricted tube. The change in the inflow area at the bottom of the annulus results in much variation in heat transfer coefficients. When the inflow area is $113.1mm^2$ the deterioration point of heat transfer coefficients gets moved up to the higher heat fluxes because of the convective flow at the bottom regions.
Effects of collision angle on heat transfer characteristics of a liquid droplet impinging on a heated wall above the Leidenfrost point temperature were experimentally investigated. The heated wall and droplet temperatures were $506^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the impact angle varied from $20^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ while the normal collision velocity was constant at 0.27 m/s. The droplet collision behaviors and the surface temperature distribution were measured using synchronized high-speed video and infrared cameras. The major physical parameters influencing upon droplet-wall collision heat transfer, such as residence time, wall heat flux, effective heat transfer area, heat transfer amount, were analyzed. It was found at the constant normal collision velocity that the residence time, wall heat flux and effective heat transfer area were hardly not changed, resulting in the almost constant heat transfer amount.
This research focused on the multi-pass heat exchanger using the minichannel possessing the spring fin. An air-water was used as working fluid. The characteristics of liquid single phase heat transfer were verified. The compact heat exchanger (heat transfer area density : ${\beta}=2,146 m^2/m^3$), based on the shape of header(Top combining header), 63 minichannels ($D_i$ : 1.4 mm, L : 0.25 m) and the air side adopting the copper wire spring fin, was fabricated. The heat transfer area density of the air side was improved up to 161% when compared with the conventional fin-tube heat exchanger that adopts the heat transfer tube with the inner diameter of 5 mm. With regard to heat transfer performance, heat transfer rate per unit volume increased up to 142% when compared with the fin-tube heat exchanger adopting the heat transfer tube with the inner diameter of 5 mm.
Falling liquid plays a role in a wide variety of naturally occurring phenomena as well as in the operation of industrial process equipment where heat and mass transfer take place. In such cases, it is required that the falling film should spread widely on the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface. An addition of surface active agent to a falling liquid film affects the flow characteristics of the falling film. In this study the heat transfer characteristics for a falling liquid film has been investigated by an addition of the surface active agents. The falling liquid film was formed on a vertical flat plate. As the mass flow rate of liquid falling film is increased, the wetted area is a little increased while the heat transfer rate as well as heat transfer coefficient is significantly increased. It is also found that both wetted area and heat transfer rate is substantially increased while heat transfer coefficient is a little increased with an increase in the surfactant concentration at a given mass flow rate.
This study conducted a research as to condensation heat transfer by using three types of flat micro multi-channel tubes with different processing of micro-fin and number of channels inside the pipes and different sizes of appearances. In addition, identical studies were conducted by using smoothing circular tubes with 5mm external diameter to study heat transfer coefficient. The condensation heat transfer coefficient showed an increase as the vapor quality and mass flux increased. However, each tube shows little differences compared to 400kg/m2s or identical in case the mass flux are 200kg/m2s and 100kg/m2s. The major reason for these factors is increase-decrease of heat transfer area that the flux type of refrigerant is exposed to the coolant's vapor with the effect of channel aspect ratio or micro-fin. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient was unrelated to the heat flux, and shows a rise as the saturation temperature gets lower, an effect that occurs from enhanced density. The physical factor of heat transfer coefficient increased as the channel's aspect ratio decreased. Additionally, the micro pin at the multi-channel type tube is decided as a disadvantageous factor to condensation heat enhancement factor. That is, due to the effect of aspect ratio or micro-fin, the increase-decrease of heat transfer area that the flux type of a refrigerant is exposed to the vapor is an important factor.
The major irreversibilities in absorption chillers are associated with the transfer of heat into and out from the machine and irreversible process inside the machine. By modeling only external irreversibilities(endo-reversible), a model was formulated to predict the ideal performance of a single-effect absorption chiller. Its actual performance including both external and internal irreversibilities was calculated with a in-house simulation program. The optimization of heat transfer area distribution was performed for both endo-reversible cycle and actual cycle. The equation of endo-reversible modeling was found to give about 2times higher cooling capacity than the simulation program. At optimal distribution, it was found that heat transfer area of the evaporator was about 30% of total area, that of the generator was 20%, and the rest 50% was for the absorber and condenser. The system COP for endo-reversible cycle was slightly higher than that for actual cycle. In the case of LiBr-water single-effect absorption chiller, the maximum cooling capacity was obtained near the condition that LMTD is same at all heat exchangers.
The evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for HFC-l34a in flat plate type heat exchangers with enhanced beads were experimentally investigated. Three plate type evaporators with different geometric condition of U-turn area were tested. Mass fluxes were tested over the range of 83kg/$m^2$s to 166kg/$m^2$s, and heat fluxes were varied from 4㎾/$m^2$ to 12㎾/$m^2$. Evaporation temperature was 5$^{\circ}C$ with inlet qualities of 0.1 to 1.0. There was no notable difference in the heat transfer coefficient by geometric variation of U-turn area, but the third plate with cross-ribbed channel at U-turn area was better than others in the evaluation using volume goodness factor comparison. Also, the mixtures of HFC-l34a and PAG oil was tested to determine oil effects on heat transfer and pressure drop. As oil concentration was increased, heat transfer coefficient was increased by 22~48% up to the 3wt.%, but decreased by 14~22% at the 4wt.%. The pressure drop was increased by the maximum of 100% as oil concentration was increased.
The optimum design of a heat exchanger with porous media insertion is studied in this paper. It is considered that the aluminum foam metal is inserted in a flat plate channel and air flows through it. The influence of the microstructure of the foam metal on the pressure drop and heat transfer is investigated utilizing previous analytical results and existing correlation equations. Design parameters are identified as the unit-cell size and the ligament thickness of the porous medium, and their effects are examined. The results show that there exists optimum microstructure of the porous media maximizing heat transfer with a constant pressure drop. When the increase in the pressure drop is within a practically acceptable range, the increase in the heat transfer is dominated by the increase in the heat transfer area due to the porous medium insertion. Consequently, among the porous media with a constant pressure drop, the heat transfer is maximized with a microstructure with maximum specific surface area.
