The objective of this study was to evaluate corrosion resistance of additive manufactured 316L stainless steel and alloy 625 powders widely used in corrosion resistance alloys of marine industry in comparison with cast alloys. Directed Energy Deposition (DED) method was used in this work for sample production. DED parameter adjustment was also studied for optimum manufacturing and for minimizing the influence of defects on corrosion property. Additive manufactured alloys showed lower corrosion resistance in seawater compared to cast alloys. The reason for the degradation of anti-corrosion property was speculated to be due to loss of microstructural integrity intrinsic to the additive manufacturing process. Application of heat treatment with various conditions after DED was attempted. The effect of heat treatments was analyzed with a microstructure study. It was found that 316L and alloy 625 produced by the DED process could recover their expected corrosion resistance when heat treated at 1200 ℃.
The risk of progressive collapse in steel framed buildings under fire conditions is gradually rising due to the increasing use of combustible materials. The fire resistance of such steel framed buildings is evaluated by fire tests. Recently, the application of performance based fire engineering makes it easier to evaluate the fire resistance owing to various engineering techniques and fire science. The fire resistance of steel structural members can be evaluated by the comparison of the limiting temperatures and maximum temperatures of structural steel members. The limiting temperature is derived at the moment that the failure of structural member results from the rise in temperature and the maximum temperature is calculated by using a heat transfer analysis. To obtain the limiting temperatures for structural steel of grades SS400 and SM490 in Korea, tensile strength tests of coupons at high temperature were conducted. The limiting temperatures obtained by the tensile coupon tests were compared with the limiting temperatures reported in the literature and the results of column fire tests under four types of loading with different load ratios. Simple limiting temperature formulas for SS400 and SM490 steel based on the fire tests of the tensile coupons are proposed. The limiting temperature predictions using the proposed formulas were proven to be conservative in comparison with those obtained from H-section and hollow section column fire tests.

Double-layered Al-Mg films have been deposited by using an e-beam deposition method on a cold-rolled steel sheet(CR), which the structure of the film was Al/Mg/CR. The micro-structure, alloy phase, and corrosion resistance of the Al-Mg coated CR were investigated before and after heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2, 3, and 10 min in a nitrogen atmosphere. Total thickness of Al-Mg films was fixed at $3{\mu}m$ and the thickness ratio of Al and Mg layers(Al:Mg) has been changed from 5:1 to 1:5. The cross-sectional morphology of the films, which had the thickness ratio of 2:1(Al:Mg), 1:1, and 1:2, was changed after heat treatment from columnar to featureless structure. The x-ray diffraction data for as-deposited films showed only pure Al and Mg peaks. Al-Mg alloy peaks such as $Al_3Mg_2$ and $Al_{12}Mg_{17}$ phase appeared after the heat treatment. The Al-Mg coating with the thickness ratio of 1:1(Al:Mg) showed the best corrosion resistance of up to 500 hours by salt spray test.

The plasma spray process was used to deposit coatings of $ZrO_2$-8wt%Y2O3 powders on mild steel sub-strate, and the characteristics of as-deposited and heat treated coatings have been investigated. Particulary, the variations of porosity, wear resistance, thermal barrier and thermal shock resistance in $ZrO_2$-8wt% $Y_2O_3$coatings after heat treatment under vacuum circumstance have been investigated. The porosity of the coating layer was increased with increased spray distance. In the case of the arc current of 450A and at the spray distance of 50mm, it was obtained the lowest amount of porosity. After heat treatment, the amount of porosity was found to be decreased, and the wear resistance, microhardness and thermal shock resistance were im-proved. However, the thermal barrier was decreased.
The effect of gas mixing ratios during gas nitrocarburizing treatment on the formation of compound layer and the mechanical properties has been studied for hot work tool steel by using a combined heat treating technique. The thickness of compound and diffusion layers has been shown to grow as a parabolic relation with increasing the amount of ammonia at a given flow quantity of $CO_2$ gas. The compound layer consists mainly of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_3$(C, N) with small amounts of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ and ${\alpha}$-Fe. The combined heat treated hot work tool steel has shown that the thickness of compound layer increases with increasing nitrocarburizing time, but the rate of growth slows down as gas nitrocarburizing time goes more than two hours. Tensile properties have given a remarkable improvement. In particular, the wear resistance of combined heat treated hot work tool steel has exhibited an improvement of about 165% greater than that obtained from conventional quenching and multi-tempering treatments.

This study examined the influence of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions on corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel tube. Due to the high cooling rate of laser welding, the phase fraction of ferrite and austenite in the weld metal became unbalanced significantly. In addition, the Cr2N particles were precipitated adjacent to the fusion line, which can be susceptible to the localized corrosion. On the other hand, the phase fraction in the weld metal was restored at a ratio of 5:5 when exposed to temperatures above 1060 ℃ during the post weld heat treatment. Nevertheless, the high beltline speed during the PWHT, leading to the insufficient cooling rate, caused a precipitation of σ phase at the interface between ferrite/austenite in both weld metal and base metal. This resulted in the severe corrosion damages and significant decrease in critical pitting temperature (CPT), which was even lower than that measured in as-welded condition. Moreover, the fraction of σ phase in the center region of post weld heat treated steel tube was obtained to be higher than in the surface region. These results suggest that the PWHT conditions for the steel tube should be optimized to ensure the high corrosion resistance by excluding the precipitation of σ phase even in center region.

Micro-machining, one of the non-traditional machining techniques, can achieve a wanted shape of the surface using metal dissolution with electrochemical reaction and can be applied to the metal such as high tension, heat resistance and hardened steel. The workpiece dissolves when it is positioned close to the tool electrode in electrolyte and the current is applied. Traditional machining has been used in the industries such as cutting, deburring, drilling and shaping. The aim of this work is to develop Micro-machining techniques for micro shape by establishing appropriate machining parameters of micro-machining
Carbide dissolution during heating processes can change chemical composition of martensitic stainless steel in its austenitic phase. Although the austenitizing treatments were carried out at a homogeneous austenite region, the amount of carbon atom in the matrix differs. Increase in the amount of carbon contents in the matrix resulted in decreasing MS temperature, which consequently causes the volume fraction of the retained austenite to increase. This study reveals the effects of the austenitizing treatment on the properties of Fe - 0.3C - 14Cr - 3Mo martensitic stainless steel change with different austenitizing temperatures.
Duplex stainless steel, which is a kind of stainless steel with a mixed microstructure of about equal proportions of austenite and ferrite, is generally known as a unique material with excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. However, toughness, strength, and corrosion resistance of the steel could be reduced due to precipitation of topologically closed packed phases such as sigma phase during cooling. In case of large forged products, they have strong possibility that ${\sigma}$-phase precipitates due to difference of cooling rate between surface and inner of the products. Investigation on sigma phase precipitation behavior of duplex stainless steel with change of cooling rate was carried out in this study. Forged SAF 2205 duplex stainless steel was used as specimens to examine the cooling rate effect. Dissolution behavior of sigma phase was also discussed through resolution test of duplex stainless steel containing lots of sigma phase. Experimental results revealed that impact energy was very sensitive to precipitation of small amount sigma phase. However, sigma phase could be removed by short term resolution treatment and impact resistance of the duplex stainless steel was restored.
A brief overview is given of the development of various structural steels and their welding application technology. Firstly, the general characteristics and welding performance of structural steels used in architecture and bridge are introduced. For safety against earthquakes or strong wind, and for highly efficient welding in high-rise building constructions, ultra high strength steel with tensile strength over 800 MPa or high HAZ toughness steel plates under high heat input welding have been developed. In particular, efficient welding technology ensuring high resistance to cold and hot cracking of ultra high strength steel is reviewed in the present paper. Secondly, various coated steels used mainly for outer part in construction are briefly discussed. Moreover, a major drawback of coated steel during welding operation, and several solutions to overcome such technical problem are proposed. It is hoped that this review paper can lead to significant academic contributions and provide readers interested in the structural steels with useful welding technology.
