  • Conventional spheroidization process of cold heading quality steels requires long heat treatment time, and reduction of the heat treatment time is important for improving productivity in the industry. Recently, hot deformation method has been proposed as a means of increasing spherodization kinetics. In this study, the influences of hot deformation on the spherodization behavior of cold heading quality steels were investigated. Hot deformation at the temperature range of $700^{\circ}C$ significantly enhances the spheroidization kinetics. Hot deformation can lead to a substantial reduction of spherodization process time as low as 1~5 hrs.

  • This study presents the enhancement of forgeability of SNCM522H materials. Target parts are output shaft(OP shaft) used as components of power train for automobiles. To carry out cold forging process of OP shaft by 1 pass instead of existing 2 pass process, studies in terms of process design and heat treatment were performed. To introduce the new process, the finite element method was accomplished, and to assess the validity of proposed heat treatment cycle, several experiments(hardness test, observation of optical microstructures, tensile test) were carried out. The 2Pass forging process could be reduced as lPass process through improvement of process and heat treatment technology and that would give cost reduction.

  • In conventional metallothermic reduction(MR) for obtaining tantalum powder in batch-type operation, it is difficult to control morphology and location of deposits because the reaction occurs by direct physical contact between reductants and feed materials. On the other hand, a electronically mediated reaction(EMR) is capable to overcome these difficulties through the reaction by electron transfer and have a merit of continuous process. In this study an MR and EMR method has been applied to the production of a tantalum powder by sodium reduction of $K_2TaF_7$. As the reduction temperature increases, the particle size and yield of tantalum powder obtained by MR and EMR method is increased.

  • Most technologies of reduction process used in the heat treatment of existent metal products are related to metals applied to bolts and parts of automobiles, and nonmetal such as copper. Heating conditions and reduction gases produced in above processes depend on types of products to be treated thermally but heating systems employ electricity commonly and the reduction gases are separated into additional production equipment and a gas dryer and inefficiently provided into the system. Electrical heating system has the advantage of convenient temperature-control but is not economical because of disadvantages of high electricity-running cost and extra installation cost of a transformer. Accordingly, development of the system which has economical heating mode in which provision of reduction gas and heating conditions are unified is necessary for improvement of economy and efficiency in current reduction processes. This study aimed to develop a new advanced heat treatment furnace using catalytic combustion. thereby minimizing the cost during heating, supplying heat and reductive gas at the same time and controlling operating condition freely by changing electrical heating system to heating system by the gas combustion and regeneration of wasted heat.

  • The reduction and diffusion process(R-D process) is an economical way to produce the functional materials which contain rare-earth elements and has been applied to the production of rare-earth magnet meterials($SmCo_5$, $Nd_{15}Fe_{77}B_8$), magneto-optical(MO) target materials and hydrogen storage alloy, etc. However, because of difficult to control of the final composition, the R-D process has not been applied to production of the 2-17 type rare earth permanent magnet materials which contain several elements. Therefore, this work was as a basic study for the production of the 2-17 type rare earth permanent materials with composition $Sm(Co_{0.72}Fe_{0.21}Cu_{0.05}Zr_{0.03})_{7.9}$ by the R-D process, the following were mainy examined ; the amount of metallic calcium as a reductant, homogenization condition of the alloy after the R-D reaction, masuring of magnetic properties of the sample after step aging. The sample prepared by the R-D process contained a little more oxygen than that prepared by the melting method, however, showed almost the same magnetic properties.

  • The 1.6 vol% and 2.5 vol% TiNi/6061Al composites were fabricated by permanent mold casting for investigating the effect of heat treatment on tensile strength for composites. The tensile strength without T6 treatment at 293 K was increased with increasing the volume fraction of TiNi fiber and at 363 K the higher the pre-strain, the higher the tensile strength. The tensile strength of the composite with $T_{6}$ treatment at 293 K was found to increase with increasing both the amount of pre-strain and the volume fraction of TiNi fiber and was higher than that without $T_{6}$ treatment. It should be noted that the tensile strength 2.5vol%TiNi/6061Al composites rolled at a 38% reduction ratio was the maximum value of 298 MPa. The tensile strength of composites decreased with increasing the reduction ratio over 38% because of the rupture of TiNi fiber.

  • The present paper presented and applied an exergy analysis method to evaluate the magnitudes and the locations of exergy losses in the conventional desuperheating and depressurizing process of high pressure and temperature steam delivery system. In addition, for the reduction of exergy losses occurred in conventional process, the present study proposed new alternative processes in which the pressure reducing valve and the desuperheater of conventional process are substituted with steam turbine and heat exchanger, and their effects on exergy loss reduction and exergy efficiency improvement are theoretically investigated and compared. From the present analysis results, the total exergy loss caused in conventional desuperheating and depressurizing process accounted for 66.5% of exergy input and 85% of the total exergy loss was due to the mixing between steam and cold water(e.g desuperheating). However, it was shown from the present analysis results that the present alternative processes can additionally reduce exergy loss by maximum 92.7% of the total exergy loss in conventional process, and can also produce additional and useful energy, the electricity of 220.6 kWh and the heat of 54.3 MJ/hr.

  • This study was carried out to improve the design of heat exchanger for small marine diesel engine. As air pollutants emitted from small marine diesel engine become international problem, IMO(International Marine Organization) tried to establish severe regulations for NOx reduction. The formation of NOx is affected by cooling system, for instance, such as intercooler, heat exchanger, exhaust manifold, and therefore cooling systems are one of essential parts for design of small marine diesel engine. In this study, heat exchanger for small marine diesel engine was modeled and simulated using CATIA V5R19 and ANSYS FLUENT V.13. Thermal flow simulation for heat exchanger was performed to find the optimal design. As the results, maximum velocity of engine coolant in shell inside was 9.1m/s and it was confirmed that outlet temperature and temperature drop for engine coolant could be calculated by simulating proportional relations of temperature between engine coolant and sea water.

  • The Cu-Fe permanent magnet were prepared in situ process, which has economic and mass productive merits in producing multi filamentary composites. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of reduction ratio and heat treatment on magnetic property. As the reduction ratio of Cu-Fe wire increased, the filament structure became finer and interfilament distances decreased and the morphology of filament cross section became ribbon shape. As Fe content increased significantly. The coercivity and squareness of Cu-55 wt%Fe composite increased as a reduction ratio became higher, whereas they increased to maximum values at 0.09 mm ${\phi}$ for Cu-30 wt%Fe, and 0.066 mm ${\phi}$ for CU-45 wt%Fe respectively, and decreased for further reduction. The magnetic properties of Cu-Fe composites can be more enhanced by intermediate heat treatment. The best magnetic properties were obtained from Cu-55 wt%Fe composite deformed to 0.054 mm ${\phi}$ and annealed.

  • This study reports on the dissolution behavior of SrO in LiCl at varying SrO concentrations from low concentrations to excess. The amount of SrO dissolved in the molten salt and the species present upon cooling were determined. The thermal behavior of LiCl containing various concentrations of SrO was investigated. The experimental results were compared with results from the simulated results using the HSC Chemistry software package. Although the reaction of SrO with LiCl in the standard state at 650 ℃ has a slightly positive Gibbs free energy, SrO was found to be highly soluble in LiCl. Experimentally determined SrO concentrations were found to be considerably higher than those present in used nuclear fuel (<2 g/kg). As Sr-90 is one of the most important heat-generating nuclides in used nuclear fuel, this finding will be impactful in the development of fast, simple, and proliferation-resistant heat reduction processes for used nuclear fuel without the need for separating nuclear materials. Heat reduction is important as it decreases both the volume necessary for final disposal and the worker handling risk.
