  • The purpose of this research is to study on the heat transfer characteristics of separate type heat pipe with a rotor. The heat transfer characteristics of the rotor condenser are various on input heat of evaporator, rotational speeds of rotor, and working fluid amount. The results obtained from the study are as follows. 1. Magnetic fluid using seal of the rotor operated in stability by a variation of temperature and rotation speeds. The configuration of magnetic fluid seal assembly was adequate. 2. Steam ejector is effective in recovering working fluid condensate in the rotor. When steam ejector is operating, the heat flux of working fluid does not change, with the wall temperature in the rotor. 3. The optimum design conditions on working fluid amount and rotational speeds are effective in evaporator volume 50%, rotational speeds 200rpm, 300rpm, and operating temperature $80^{\circ}C$. With working fluid amount increasing, overall heat transfer coefficient decreases linearly.

  • Heat transfer characteristics of a heat exchanged for low temperature waste heat recovery using oscillating capillary tube heat pipe (OCHP) were evaluated against the charging ratio variation of working fluid and various working fluids. R-l42b, R-22 and R-290 were used as working a 2.6mm in outside diameter, 1.44mm in inside diameter with 101m length and 140 turns. Charging ratio of working fluid was 40% and 50%. water was used as secondary fluid. Inlet temperature and mass velocity for each secondary fluid were 297 K, 280 K and 9~27 $4kg/m^2s$, respectively. From experimental results, it was found that heat transfer performance of R-22 was higher than those of R-142b and R-290 and it was proportional to Figure of Merit for thermosyphon. As a result, it was thought that R-22 was the most reasonable working fluid of waste heat recovery for low temperature waste heat recovery.

  • This study was conducted in order to find an ideal working fluid kind and a proper filling amount in the heat pipe as well as an inclined angle of heat pipe when they are placed to recover exhaust gas heat in the hot air heater. Followings are the findings of this research. 1. Of the four different working fluids-gasoline kerosene distilled water and acetone-acetone filled heat pipe showed the best performance giving out more homogeneous temperature profile on the radiating part than the kerosene and gasoline heat pipe an carrying out heat transmitting function better than the distilled water heat pipe by 10~2$0^{\circ}C$ higher on the radiating part. Acetone would be a good choice for recycling of exhaust gas heat in the hot air heater. 2. Of the filling amount of working fluid inside the heat pipes dry-out situations possible caused by insufficient filling were found in the filling amount of 5, 7.5 and 10% heat pipes as heat supply rate increases gradually in the range of 50 to 15kJ/sec. but no dry-out and stabilized heat transmitting performance occurred in the heat pipes of 12.5 and 15% filling at the same heat supply rate. It recommends that filling amount shall exceed 12.5% at least with the working fluids of this experiment. 3. The test revealed that the heat transmitting performance of heat pipe was more affected by filling amount rather than inclined angle.

  • In this paper, the heat transfer characteristics of a self-oscillating heat pipe are experimentally investigated for the effect of various working fluid fill charge ratios and heat loads. The characteristics of temperature oscillations of the working fluid are also analysed based on chaotic dynamics. The heat pipe is composed of a heating section, a cooling section and an adiabatic section, and has a 0.002m internal diameter, a 0.34m length in each turn and consists of 19 turns. The heating and the cooling portion of each turn has a length of 70mm. A series of experiments was carried out to measure the temperature distributions and the pressure variations of the heat pipe. Furthermore, heat transfer performance, effective thermal conductivity, boiling heat transfer and condensation heat transfer coefficients are calculated for various operating conditions. Experimental results show the efficacy of this type of heat pipe.

  • Experimental study is performed to investigate the effect of heat load and operating temperature on the thermal performance of a heat pipe with screen mesh wick. The heat pipe was designed in 200 screen meshes, 500mm length and 12.7mm O.D tube of copper, water as working fluid(4.8g) and nitrogen as non-condensible gas(NCG). The heat pipe used in this study has evaporator, condenser and adiabatic section, respectively. Experimental data of axial wall temperature distribution is presented for heat transport capacity, the temperature of cooling water of condenser, inclination angle, and operating temperature. For the results from this study, it is found that, for the same charging mass of working fluid, the initial operating temperature and the overall wall temperatures of heat pipe are higher for NCG charging mass of $5.0{\times}10^{-6}kg$ and $3.4{\times}10^{-6}kg$, than that of $1.0{\times}10^{-6}kg$.

  • Performance of heat exchanger was evaluated to heat exchanger using oscillating heat pipe for waste heat recovery of low temperature. Oscillating heat pipe used in this study was formed to the closed loop of serpentine shapes using copper tubes. Heat exchanger was formed to shell and tube type and composed of low finned tube. R-22 and R-141b were used to the working fluids of tube side and their charging ratio was 40%. And, water was used to the working fluid of shell side. As the experimental parameters, the inlet temperature difference of heating and cooling part of secondary fluid and the mass velocity of secondary fluid were used. The mass velocity of secondary fluid was changed from 90 kg/$m^2s\; to\;190 kg/m^2$s from the experimental results, heat recovery rate was linearly increased to the increment of the mass velocity of secondary fluid and the inlet temperature difference of secondary fluid. Finally, the performance of heat exchanger was evaluated by using $\varepsilon$-NTU method. It was found that NTU was about 1.5 when effectiveness was decided to 80%.

  • Heat transfer characteristics of a rotating heat pipe have been studied numerically and experimentally with using water-ethanol mixture as working fluid. And triangular fins are attached inside the rotating heat pipe. Experimental results generally agreed with numerical results. According to increasing rpm and vapour pressure of the rotating heat pipe, the heat transfer rate increased. And also according to decreasing the concentration of ethanol, the heat transfer rate increased. In the case of using the pure ethanol as working fluid, the heat transfer rate was about 80% of using distilled water. The heat transfer rate and operating temperature difference of the rotating heat pipe was much influenced by ethanol concentration, and the optimum ethanol concentration was 0.2.

  • A contractible heat pipe is designed and tested to improve cooling performance of conduction cooled superconducting magnet. When the heat pipe temperature drops below the triple point temperature, heat pipe working fluid freezes to create low pressure. From this moment the heat pipe does net work any more (OFF state) and it just works as a heat leak path when the temperature of the first stage is higher than that of the second stage. Considering small cooling capacity of the second stage around 4.2 K, the conduction loss is not negligible. Therefore, the contractible heat pipe, made of a metal bellows and copper tubes, was considered to eliminate the conduction loss. Nitrogen and argon are as working fluid of heat pipe. The copper block is cooled down with these heat pipe and the cooling performance for each heat pipe is compared. At off state, the bellows is contracted due to the low pressure of heat pipe and the evaporator section of the heat pipe is detached about 3 mm from the second stage cold head of the cryocooler. In this way, we tan eliminate the conduction loss through the heat pipe wall.

  • Analysis and experiment are performed to investigate the thermal performance of a heat pipe with axial grooves. The heat pipe was designed in a 6.5 mm I.D., 17 axial trapezoidal grooves. 1000 mm long tube of aluminium, and ammonia as working fluid. A mathematical equations fur heat pipe with axial grooves is formulated to obtain the capillary limitation on heat transport rate in a steady state. As a result, heat transport factor of heat pipe has the maximum at the operating temperature of 293K in 0m elevation. As the elevation of heat pipe increases. the heat transport factor of the heat pipe is reduced markedly, comparing with that of horizontal elevation of the heat pipe. It may be considered that such behavior of heat pipe is caused by the working fluid swarmed back to the condenser port due to gravity force and supercooled by a coolant of heat exchanger. Analytical results of heat transport factor are in a good agreement with those of experiment.
