  • Heat cycle aging of insulating materials in large generator stator winding has been investigated using both on-line and off-line test methods. On this study, principally, off-line test against actual generator in service was carried out to acquire information about polarization index(PI) and dissipation factor, dissipation factor tip-up, maximum partial discharge for the purpose of remnant breakdown voltage and life assessment. It was found from the tests that both dissipation factor and maximum partial discharge decreased with the increase of operating hours and starting numbers. It was found from off-line tests that the remnant breakdown voltage had a strong relationship with both dissipation factor and maximum partial discharge the remnant breakdown voltage as a results of both operating hours and starting number and the nondestructive tests were proposed as parameters which can predict the remnant lifetime of insulating materials in large generator stator windings. • In the aerospace field, Carbon/Cork composites have been used for rocket propulsion systems as a light weight structural component with a high bending stiffness and high thermal insulation properties. For the fabrication of a carbon composite with a heat insulation cork part, the bonding properties between them are very important to determine the service life of the Carbon/Cork composite structure. In this study, the changes in the interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of Carbon/Cork composites under accelerated aging conditions were investigated. The accelerated aging experiments were performed with different temperatures and humidity conditions. The properties of the aged Carbon/Cork composites were evaluated mainly with the interfacial strength. Finally, the lifetime prediction of the Carbon/Cork composites was performed with the long-term property data under accelerated conditions.

  • The economic losses resulted from the accident in the power cables at the power station is not only huge but also requires a great amount of time and expenses to restore to the former condition. In order to prevent these, it is necessary to invent and apply a technique to expect and prevent the accidents. In order to measure insulation resistances of power cables in operation, we derived the relations between load current and temperature. By analyzing data obtained from our measuring equipments, we showed the expected time to change deteriorated cables before accident occurs. We present a result of our study on the effects of the load current on lifetime of 6.6 kV cable systems in operation. With the current flowing through the load of the cable a heat is generated reducing the lifetime of the cable. In order to find out the effect of load current on the lifetime of cable systems, we applied the lifetime theory to the development of two equipments to measure insulation resistance and current of cable systems in operation.

  • Overheating in electrical motors results in detrimental effects such as degradation of the insulation materials, demagnetization of magnets, increases in Joule losses, and decreases in motor efficiency and lifetime. Thus, it is important to find ways to dissipate heat from the motor and to keep the motor operating at its most efficient temperature. In this study, a new design to guide air flow through a given brushless direct current (BLDC) motor is developed and the design is analyzed, specifically by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results showed that the temperature distribution in the three proposed models is lower than that in the original model, although the speed of the cooling fan in the original model reaches a very high value of $15{\times}10^3$ rpm. The results also showed that CFD can be effectively used to simulate the heat transfer of BLDC motors.

  • The purpose of study is to estimate heating, cooling load performance and economic efficiency in office building with applied the functional paint. this paint can reduced SHGC(Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) on the glazing surface by coating. In this study, estimated to compared with double glazing, low-e glazing, IP(Insulation Paint) and IPu(Insulation UV-Cut Paint) coating glazing. As a result of this study, 1)heating & cooling load Analysis, SHGC value and U-factor of double glazing is about 0.70 and 3.29($W/m^2K$). low-E glazing is about 0.65 and 2.70($W/m^2K$). Two-side it is about 0.27 and 3.25($W/m^2K$). When compared to double glazing, annual heating & cooling load of low-E glazing, Two-side IPu and IP paint coating glazing is 3,012MWh($124kWh/m^2$), 2,910MWh($120kWh/m^2$), 2,867MWh($118.4kWh/m^2$) and 2,867MWh($118.4kWh/m^2$). It i sreduced to 2.0%, 5.2%, 6.7%, and 6.7% respectively. 2)the estimation of economic efficiency, low-e glazing installed in office building can not recover the investment within a lifetime 40years. but IPu and IP paint, two-side coating in glazing, have a payback period of 13 years respectively.

  • In order to meet increasing power demands, electrical capacity of equipment for power transfers should become larger accordingly. The equipment used for producing and delivering high-voltage power is also required to operate with a high degree of reliability. The stable operation of power equipment is a necessity, not an option. The current through the power cable, the only device to deliver high power, generates a Joule heat, which causes a deteriorating process on the cable system. The XLPE cable is manufactured in such a manner that it can operate for 30 years at $90^{\circ}$, but there is no guarantee that each cable will reach its projected lifetime of 30 years. In this paper, we have measured the temperatures of nine power cables in operation, based on the theory of cable longevity. In order to study the relationship between temperature and longevity, we have devised a new set of equipment and installed it at Korea Western Power Co., Ltd. located in Taean.

  • Thermal problems that are directly related to the lifetime of an electronic device are becoming increasingly important owing to the miniaturization of electronic devices. To solve thermal problems, it is essential to study thermal stability through thermal diffusion and insulation. A honeycomb sandwich plate has anisotropic thermal conductivity. To analyze the thermal deformation and temperature distribution of a system that employs a honeycomb sandwich plate, the thermal and elastic properties need to be determined. In this study, the thermal and elastic properties of a honeycomb sandwich plate, such as thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and shear modulus, are predicted. The properties of a honeycomb sandwich plate vary according to the hexagon size, thickness, and material properties.
