Several critical heat flux (CHF) correlations including the look-up table in the MARS code have been assessed for the prediction of CHF in a downward-flow narrow rectangular channel. For the assessment, we built an experiment database that covers pressures between 1.01 and 39.0 bar, gap sizes between 1.09 and 6.53 mm, mass fluxes up to 25,772 kg/m2s, and under one-sided and two-sided heating conditions. The results of the assessment showed that the Kaminaga correlation has the best overall prediction compared to others. However, because the correlation uses global variables, such as inlet and outlet subcooling and total heat transfer area, it is difficult to use in a system code. A new CHF correlation is then proposed by replacing the global variables in the Kaminaga correlation with local ones and adding correction factors to consider the effect of gap size, mass flux, and the number of heating walls. Additional correction factor is added to consider the effect of inlet subcooling. It is shown that the new one is better than the Kaminaga correlation and it is easy to implement to any system code.

Two-phase pressure drop experiments were performed during flow boiling to deionized water in a microchannel having a hydraulic diameter of $500{\mu}m$. Tests were made in the ranges of heat fluxes from 100 to $400kW/m^2$, vapor qualities from 0 to 0.2 and mass fluxes of 200, 400 and $600kg/m^2s$. The frictional pressure drop during flow boiling is predicted by using two models; the homogeneous model that assumes equal phase velocity and the separate flow model that allows a slip velocity between two phases. From the experimental results, it is found that the two phase multiplier decreases with an increase in mass flux. Measured data of pressure drop are compared to a few available correlations proposed for macroscale and mini/microscale. Among the separated flow models, the correlation model suggested by Lee and Garimella predicted the frictional pressure drop within MAE of 47.2%, which is better than other correlations.
The penetration potential of TIG welding in one single run is limited, though the process itself generates high quality welds with good weld cosmetics. This is one of the main reasons, which has contributed to its development in high duty applications such as those encountered in aeronautical, aerospace, nuclear & power plant applications. For these applications, stainless steels, titanium k nickel based alloys are most often used. As these materials remain very sensible to weld heat input k atmospheric pollution, stringent processing conditions are imposed. For example welding of titanium alloys requires argon shielding of weld zone and for 5 mm thick plates multi-pass runs & filler additions are required. This multi-run operation not only raises the welding cost, but also increases defect risks. In recent years, extensive interest has been raised by the possibility to increase weld penetrations through flux applications & the process is designated ATIG-activated TIG, or FBTIG-flux bounded TIG. The improved welding performance of such flux assisted TIG is related to arc constriction and surface tension effects on weld pool. The research work by authors has lead to the formulation of welding fluxes for stainless steels k titanium alloys with TIG Process. These fluxes are now commercialized & some applications in industry have already been carried out. FBTIG for aluminum has been proposed with silica application for AC mode TIG welding. The paper highlights the fundamentals of flux role in TIG welding and illustrates some industrial applications.

An experimental study on the refrigerant-side pressure drop of slit fin-tube heat exchanger has been carried out. A comparison was made between the predictions of previously proposed empirical correlations and experimental data for the pressure drop on design conditions of condenser in micro-fin tube for R22 and its alternatives, R407C (R32/125/134a, 23/25/52 wt.%) and R410A (R32/125, 50/50 wt.%). Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ and mass fluxes varying from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s for R22, R407C and R410A. The inlet air conditions are dry bulb temperature of 35$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.43 m/s. Experiments show that pressure drop for R410A and R407C were 17.8∼20.2% and 5∼6.8% lower than those of R22 respectively for the degree of subcooling of 5$^{\circ}C$. For the mass fluxes of 200∼250 kg/$m^2$s, the deviation between the experimental and predicted values for the pressure drop was less than $\pm$20% for R22, R407C and R410A.

The condensation heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants R-22, R-134a, and a binary refrigerant mixture R-410A flowing in a small diameter tube were investigated. The experiment apparatus consists of a refrigerant loop and a water loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a variable-speed pump, a mass flowmeter, an evaporator, and a condenser(test section). The water loop consists of a variable-speed pump, an isothermal tank, and a flowmeter. The condenser is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of smooth, horizontal copper tube of 3.38mm outer diameter and 1.77mm inner diameter. The length of test section is 1220mm. The refrigerant mass fluxes varied from 450 to 1050kg/(㎡$.$s) and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main results were summarized as follows ; in the case of single-phase flow, the heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing mass flux. The heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was higher than that of R-22 and R-134a, and the heat transfer for small diameter tubes were about 20% to 27% higher than those predicted by Gnielinski. In the case of two-phase flow, the heat transfer coefficients also increase with increasing mass flux and quality. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was slightly higher than that of R-22 and R-134a. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed significant deviations with experimental data except for the ranges of low quality and low mass flux.

The condensation pressure drop for R-22 and R-410A flowing in a small diameter tube was investigated. The test section is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and coolant flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of 1220 mm length with horizontal copper tube of 3.38 mm outer diameter and 1.77 mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes ranged from 450 to $1050\;kg/m^2{\cdot}s$ and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main experimental results were summarized as follows : In the case of two-phase flow, the pressure drop increases with increasing mass flux and decreasing quality. The pressure drop of R-22 is slightly higher than that of R-410A for the same mass flux. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed enormous deviations with experimental data.

Although fireside corrosion of heat transfer surfaces in coal fired steam generators has been a problem to some extent for a number of tears, with the advent of low NOx firing systems these surfaces can be exposed to conditions that will exacerbate wastage rates. Numerous reports of waterwall wastage in coal fired boilers have appeared in the literature. It is believed that wastage results both from gaseous phase attack of metal surfaces and from deposition of ash and unburned fuel. Gaseous phase attack is known to occur in the presence of reducing sulfur species such as $H_2S$ and in the presence of fuel chlorine. The highest wastage rates are thought to be due to deposition of unoxidized material and the presence of fuel chlorine. Localized wall and near wall conditions that may exacerbate wastage include reducing conditions, high temperatures, high heat fluxes, and a high fraction of unoxidized material deposited. So, this study is directed at developing an advanced corrosion model in coal-fired utility boilers.

Quenching phenomena of hemispherical downward facing convex surfaces with narrow gaps have been investigated experimentally. Experiments employed test sections having 1 and 2 mm in gap thickness and 1 atm in system pressure. From interpretations of the temperature and the heat flux history, it was found that the flooding inside the gap was restricted by CCFL phenomena and quenching process was propagated from lower to upper region of the internal copper shell. The ratio of the maximum heat fluxes at 1 mm to 2mm in gap thickness was the almost same that obtained by steady state experiments. The quenching scenario of the hemispherical downward facing surface with narrow gap has been suggested.
Based on the mass balance of anion and cation fluxes, the parabolic rate constant ($K_p$) of oxide grown during the high-temperature oxidation of metal is theoretically calculated. It is assumed that the diffusion of oxygen anion and metal cation through oxide scale obeys the Fick's 1st law, the growth of oxide is controlled by the diffusion of ions, electrical potential gradient as driving force for diffusion of ions is ignored, and oxidation occurs within an existing oxide layer. Then, the parabolic rate constant can be expressed by $K_p=[2{\rho}_{MmOn}{M^2}_{MmOn}(mD_oC_o{^e}+nD_MC_M{^e})/nm]$.

Land surface temperature(LST) is one of the key parameters in physics and meteorology of land-surface processes on regional and global scales. Urban Heat Island(UHI), a meteorological phenomenon by which the air temperature in an urban area increases beyond that in the suburbs, grows with the progress of urbanization. Satellite remote sensing has been expected to be effective for obtaining thermal information of the earth's surface with a high resolution. The main purpose of this study is to produce LST map of Cheongju and to analyze the spatial distributions of surface heat fluxes in urban areas. This study, taking Cheongju as the study area, aims to examine relationship between vegetation cover rates and surface temperature, and to clarify a method for calculation surface temperature with Landsat TM thermal images.
