  • All-glass evacuated tube solar collectors consist of glass evacuated tubes and absorber tubes. Solar thermal energy from the sun is transferred to the working fluid through the glass evacuated tube and the absorber tube. Several collectors which have different absorber tubes are tested to find the effects of the absorber tube shapes and the operating conditions such as the incident heat flux and the flow rate. As the results, the efficiency of the collector which has a finned tube U tube is about $2{\sim}5%$ higher than that of the others in all cases on an average. And the collector has a finned U tube has the highest efficiency at the high flow rate and the low incident heat flux. In this condition, the outlet mean temperature is low and the heat loss becomes small. Also, it is known that the fin effect is greater than the shade effect.

  • A thermal storage tank with internal heat exchange coils is commonly used in solar thermal systems with a collector area below $100m^2$. The coils are installed in the lower part of the tank because the temperature of the upper part of the tank can drop if the outlet temperature of the collector becomes lower than the upper temperature of the tank, which is a kind of temperature reversal. As an alternative to the well-mixed storage tank with lower coil only, we have proposed a tank with lower and upper coils and have achieved superior thermal stratification in the tank, which results in increased collector efficiency and solar fraction. But, the phenomenon of temperature reversal was often observed in the tank when the load or solar radiation changed rapidly. In the present work, revised control was successfully applied, i.e., to heat only the lower coil using a three way valve if temperature reversal occurs and to operate the collector at a low flow rate when the quality of solar radiation is not good.

  • Mathematical modeling and numerical simulation studies have been conducted for a falling film type absorber of the ammonia absorption heat pump. A rigorous absorber model has been developed by considering temperature effects on physical properties and its predictability proved far superior to that of existing models, which has been confirmed by the experimental data. Using the developed model, effects of cooling water condition - temperature and flow rate - on the efficiency of absorber has been examined. As the result of simulation, the efficiency of absorber has increased as the cooling water temperature has decreased and flow rate has increased.

(1) Most of fundamental studies on fluid flow were related with heat transportation in diverse facilities. Drop formation and rivulet flow on solid surfaces were interesting topics related with condensation augmentation. Research on micro environment considering flow, heat transfer, humidity was also interesting to promote comfortable living environment. It can be extended considering biological aspects. Development of fans and blowers of high performance and low noise were continuing research topics. Well developed CFD technologies were widely applied for analysis and design of various facilities and their systems. (2) Heat transfer characteristics of enhanced finned tube heat exchangers and heat sinks were extensively investigated. Experimental studies on the boiling heat transfer, vortex generators, fluidized bed heat exchangers, and frosting and defrosting characteristics were also conducted. In addition, the numerical simulations on various heat exchangers were performed and reported to show heat transfer characteristics and performance of the heat exchanger. (3) A review of the recent studies shows that the performance analysis of heat pump have been made by various simulations and experiments. Progresses have been made specifically on the multi-type heat pump systems and other heat pump systems in which exhaust energy is utilized. The performance characteristics of heat pipe have been studied numerically and experimentally, which proves the validity of the developed simulation programs. The effect of various factors on the heat pipe performance has also been examined. Studies of the ice storage system have been focused on the operational characteristics of the system and on the basics of thermal storage materials. Researches into the phase change have been carried out steadily. • This study presents an analysis of periodic heat diffusion in an annular fin with uniform thickness. When the temperature of the fin base is changed in the form of a sinusoidal function, the exact temperature solution can be obtained by Laplace transformation in terms of the dimensionless parameters in the infinite series. Local heat flux and average heat flux, local fin efficiency and average fin efficiency were obtained. Particularly, the table of eigenvalues that are the indispensable condition in solving the heat transfer problem of annular fin in a transient state with convection phenomena at the fin edge is provided. The tables of heat fluxes and average heat fluxes, fin efficiencies and average fin efficiencies are also provided from the computed results. Also, substituting the variations of dimensionless parameters into the these exact solutions, the characteristics of these response are investigated.

  • In this study, the potential performance enhancement in a dual heat pump system through series operation was investigated by a comparison between the performance for parallel and series operation for a heating supply temperature of $60^{\circ}C$. To compare the performance of each configuration fairly, the heat transfer surface area of the heat exchangers was fixed. The inlet temperatures and the flow rates of the heat source and the load were also fixed. In addition, the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the working fluids were considered to achieve a more realistic comparison. The results show that the heating coefficient of performance (COP) of the series configuration is approximately 5% higher than that of the parallel configuration under the simulation conditions considered in the present study.

  • A commercial CFD code is applied to analyze the 3-D viscous flow field within vertical multi-stage centrifugal pimp including impeller with 6 blades and guide vane with 11 blades and is performed by changing flow rate from 10 to $26\;m^3/h$ at the constant 3500rpm. The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to confirm how much the effect of blade inlet angle of guide vane has an influence on the performance of vertical multi-stage centrifugal pimp. these results performed by $20^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}$ inlet angle of guide vane are compared with grundfos performance data. The vertical multi-stage pump consist of the impeller, guide vane, and cylinder. The characteristics such as total pressure coefficient total heat shaft horse power, power efficiency, discharge coefficient are represented according to flow rate changing.
