The performance enhancement of heat exchanger in the drying system using solar collector with evacuated tubes is analyzed. First, for this analysis, the heat loss from a reversed trapezoidal fin attached at the pipe is calculated as a function of convection characteristic number ratio, fin base length and fin tip length. Also, the optimum heat loss and fin tip length of the fin under certain conditions are presented. The overall surface effectiveness of the cylinder with reversed trapezoidal fins in the heat exchanger are shown as a function of half fin base height, fin lateral slope and fin tip length.
To investigate the possibility of crypreservation of mulberry seeds in liquid nitrogen(LN$_2$), characteristics of the seeds were examined after picking mulberry syncarps and drying-heat treatment. Storage in LN$_2$has the potential of providing indifinite preservation of valuable seed germplasm. Determining the tolerance of seeds among given cultivars to LN$_2$cooling and subsequent rewarming is the first step to establishing the feasibility of LN$_2$storage. Seeds of 4 mulberry varities were treated to LN$_2$(-196$\^{C}$) for 24 hours after drying heat treatment. Seed moisture content of Daeryukppong was the highest. As moisture content of mulberry seed was below 1%, storage in LN$_2$was safe. And drying heat treatment for 60 minutes was suitable to prevent decreased germination rate and germination vigor of seeds. The seeds of Cheongilppong were unsuibable to cryopreserve in LN$_2$for longterm storage.
Silica aerogels were synthesis by the sol-gel-supercritical drying process using isopropanol as a solvent. Effets of the heat-treatment and the surface modification through propoxylation on the structural reinforcement as well as the surface hydrophobic/hydrophilic characteristics of aerogels were investigated. Silica aerogels synthesized by supercritical drying were hydrophobic but aerogels heat-treated above 20$0^{\circ}C$ were transformed to be hydrophilic. In particular it was found that the skeletal structure of aerogels heat-treated at 50$0^{\circ}C$ was strong enough not to crack after adsorbing a large amount of water vapor. Hydrophilic aerogels modified by propoxylation at 28$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 h were reversed to the hydrophobic form. Transition between hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity was reversible. The hydrophobicvity and the hydrophilicity of silica aerogels were attributed to the Si-Oh bond and the nonpolar C-H bond groups of orgainc species respectively.
To manufacturing of solid fuel by reuse of the wastes, the drying unit which have 500 kg/hr of drying capacity was developed and experimentally evaluate the performance. The spinach grown in Nam-hae island were used for the experiments and investigated of the heated-air drying characteristics as the inlet amount of raw materials, raw material stirring status, conveying type and drying time. The drying air heated by the energy derived from the steam which is supplied from the incineration plant. The moisture contents of raw materials were measured 85.65%. The inlet flow rate of drying air made a difference as the depth of the raw materials loaded on the drying unit and temperature has showed 108~144℃. The drying speed of the mixed drying more than doubled as that of non mixed drying under the same drying type, inlet amount, drying time and drying air temperature. In each experiment, the drying capacity have showed over 500 kg/hr. A drying efficiency of the ratio of drying consumption energy to input energy was 33.46%, lower than the average of 57.76% for the 157 conventional dryers. Because developed dryer must have a drying time of less than one hour, it is considered that the dry efficiency has been reduced due to the loss of wind volume during drying. If waste heat from incineration plant is used as a direct heat source, the dry air temperature is expected to be at least 160℃, greatly improving the drying capacity.
Porous SiC beads were prepared by freeze-drying a polycarbosilane (PCS) emulsion. The water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion, which was composed of water, PCS dissolved p-xylene, and sodium xylenesulfonate (SXS) as an emulsifier, was frozen by dropping it onto a liquid $N_2$ bath; this process resulted in 1~2 mm sized beads. Beads were cured at $200^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air and heat-treated at $800^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in an Ar gas flow. Two types of pores, lamella-shaped and spherical pores, were observed. Lamellar-shaped pores were found to develop during the freezing of the xylene solvent. Water droplets in the w/o emulsion were changed into spherical pores under freeze-drying. At $1400^{\circ}C$ of heat-treatment, porous SiC was synthesized with a low level of impurities.

Porous Ti-systems with unidirectionally aligned channels were synthesized by freeze-drying and a heat treatment process. $TiH_2$ powder and camphene were used as the source materials of Ti and sublimable vehicles, respectively. Camphene slurries with $TiH_2$ content of 10 and 15 vol% were prepared by milling at $50^{\circ}C$ with a small amount of oligomeric polyester dispersant. Freezing of the slurry was done in a Teflon cylinder attached to a copper bottom plate cooled at $-25^{\circ}C$ while unidirectionally controlling the growth direction of the camphene. Pores were generated subsequently by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air for 48 h. The green body was heat-treated at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in a nitrogen and air atmosphere. XRD analysis revealed that the samples composed of TiN and $TiO_2$ phase were dependent on the heat-treatment atmosphere. The sintered samples showed large pores of about 120 mm which were aligned parallel to the camphene growth direction. The internal wall of the large pores had relatively small pores with a dendritic structure due to the growth of camphene dendrite depending on the degree of nucleation and powder rearrangement in the slurry. These results suggest that a porous body with an appropriate microstructure can be successfully fabricated by freeze-drying and a controlled sintering process of a camphene/$TiH_2$ slurry.
Oxidant radicals are implicated as a causal factor in the pathogenesis of neurobiological disorders and neuro-degenerative diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity of edible plants against oxidative stress in bovine brain tissue. Fifty five kinds of edible plants grown in Korea were dried either by freeze-drying or hot-air drying (7$0^{\circ}C$), and evaluated for their antioxidant activity by measuring TBARS (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances) in brain homogenates subjected to Fe$^{+2}$_mediated lipid peroxidation with or without the addition of botanical extracts. Heat-drying decreased the antioxidant activity of most plant extracts by 10~81%, compared with freeze-drying. However, Aruncus americanus, Ligularia stenocephala, Artemisia princceps var. orientalis, Petasites japonicus and Aster scaber showed very strong antioxidant activities regardless of processing, with or without heat treatment. The $IC_{50}$/ values of the methanol extracts from these edible plants were in the range of 0.093~0.379 mg/$m\ell$, which was lower than that of ascorbic acid (0.79 mg/$m\ell$). Thermal processing of some edible plants enhanced their antioxidant activity.
The purpose of the present study is to identify the drying cylinder model in paper plants and to analyze characteristics of process responses for changes in input variables. The model developed in this work is based on actual plant operation data where the steam pressure applied to the cylinder behaves as the major variable. It is found that heat transfer coefficients from the condensate to the canvas could be represented as empirical relations based on heat conductivities and operation data. The effectiveness of the cylinder model is demonstrated by the measured moisture contents and web temperature. Stability of the drying process is analyzed based on the transfer functions derived from the cylinder model.

Drying is the least developed of all unit operations of paper and board manufacture. While groundbreaking developments were Introduced during the several past decades in forming, pressing and calendering, no radical changes occurred in drying. The cylinder-drying technology is now more than 200 years old and, while it was subject to many incremental improvements, many of its inherent problems persist. We believe that conventional drying is now approaching the end of its life and the industry is ready for a major breakthrough in drying. Indeed several innovative technologies already exist at various stages of development or commercialization. In general, the novel drying technologies are striving to increase the drying rate, improve the product quality and boost the energy efficiency of drying. A novel, drying method, $Papridry^{TM}$, which combines conductive and convective heat transfer to obtain very high drying rates, is at an advanced stage of development at Paprican. The results obtained when drying printing paper ana board on a self-standing pilot $Papridry^{TM}$ machine and on the pilot paper machine equipped with a tandem of two $Papridry^{TM}$ units demonstrate both, the high drying rate and improved product quality achieved by using this drying method. A mathematical model of this operation has been developed and the software compiled with this model was used to calculate the effect of installing a $Papridry^{TM}$ unit into an existing dryer section. The model also allows to calculate the z-direction distribution of moisture and temperature at various points of the dryer section.
