  • Nowadays, adsorption chillers have been receiving considerable attentions as they are energy-saving and environmental1y benign systems. A Fin & tube type heat exchanger in which adsorption/desorption take place is required more compact size. The adsorption chiller is expected to have high energy-efficiency in utilizing the waste heat exhausted from a process. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the effect of fin pitch of fin & tube on the adsorption performance and to develop an optimal design fin & tube heat exchanger in the silica gel/water adsorption chiller. Previous study concluded that optimal particle size selected 0.5mm, type HO silica gel, and fundamental heat transfer & mass transfer experiments carried out. From the numerical results, the adsorption rate for the fin pitch 2.5mm is the highest than that for the fin pitch 5mm, 7.5mm and 10mm. Also cooling water & hot water temperature affect the adsorption rate.

  • The current research focuses on the development of a numerical approach to forecast strongly subcooled flow boiling of FC-72 as the refrigerant in various vertical minichannel shapes for high-heat-flux cooling applications. The simulations are carried out using the Volume of Fluid method with the Lee phase change model, which revealed some inherent flaws in multiphase flows that are primarily due to an insufficient interpretation of shearlift force on bubbles and conjugate heat transfer against the walls. A user-defined function (UDF) is used to provide specific information about this noticeable effect. The influence of shape and the inlet mass fluxes on the flow patterns, heat transfer, and pressure drop characteristics are discussed. The computational results are validated with experimental measurements, where excellent agreements are found that prove the efficiency of the present numerical model. The findings demonstrate that the heat transfer coefficient decreases as the mass flux increases and that the constriction design improves the thermal performance by 24.68% and 10.45% compared to the straight and expansion shapes, respectively. The periodic constriction sections ensure good mixing between the core and near-wall layers. In addition, a slight pressure drop penalty versus the thermal transfer benefits for the two configurations proposed is reported.

  • The present study has been conducted to investigate convective heat/mass transfer in the cooling passage with bleed holes. The rotating square channel has 40.0 mm hydraulic diameter and the bleed holes on the leading surface of the channel. The hole diameter of bleed hole is 4.5mm and its spacing is ( p/d:4.9) about five times of hole diameter. Exit mass flow rate through bleed holes is $0\%,\;10\%\;and\;20\%$ of the main mass flow rate respectively. rotation number is fixed 0.2. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The cooling performance is influenced by exit mass flow rate through bleed holes and Coriolis force of rotating channel for fixed Reynolds number. The heat transfer on the leading surface is decreased due to Coriolis force. However the total heat transfer is enhanced around holes on the leading surface because of trapping flow by bleeding.

  • Liquid desiccant material, such as lithium chloride (LiCl) or halide slits are usually used on air conditioning application for controlling the humidity of high Outdoor Air (OA). Solar energy is usually used to heat the liquid in regeneration process of those desiccant. The mass transfer it self is driven by the temperature different between the liquid desiccant and the input air. This experiment study is analyzing the characteristic of the aqueous LiCl-air temperature different in variance specific gravity, especially in range of temperature different using the solar energy as the heat generator. The experiment has done by variating the concentration of the LiCl with specific gravity 1.210 and 1.150. For the comparison the pure water is also used. The result show that the mass transfer rate is increased in every variation as the increases of the temperature different, and the weeker aqueous solution of the LiCl the highest mass transfer coefficient.

  • This study presents comparison of the air side heat transfer and friction characteristics in a heating condition between Louver fin-tube heat exchangers and aluminum heat exchangers. Experiments are performed for the Louver fin-tube heat exchangers and aluminum heat exchangers using a calorimeter, which is designed based on air-enthalpy method described in ASHRAE standards. The air velocities its are varied from 0.7 to 1.6 m/s with 0.3 m/s interval. A study result shows that the heat transfer performances of aluminum heat exchangers are $40{\sim}80%$ higher than those of Louver fin-tube heat exchangers per unit volume, mass and heat transfer area.

  • Among the main components of PEM fuel cell, the functions of GDL are to transport reactants from the channel to the catalyst and remove reaction products from the catalyst and transport heat from the catalyst to the channels in the flow filed plate. Permeability of GDL is known to make it possible to enhance the gas transport through GDL, devoting to get better performance. In this paper, three dimensional numerical simulation of the fuel cell by the permeability of GDL is presented by using a FLUENT modified to include the electrochemical behavior. Results show that as permeability is higher than $10^{-12}m^2$, gradients of temperature distribution, oxygen molar concentration and current density distribution in MEA were decreased. Although heat generation was increased as high permeability, MEA's temperature was lower than the low permeability of GDL. This seems because that convection was higher affects in mass and heat transfer process than diffusion as permeability of GDL is increases.

  • Based on a set of performance plots relating the design variables to the imposed conditions, an easy-to-use and versatile design procedure for chevron-type multipass plate heat exchangers is developed. In order for the present procedure to cover multipass with unequal passes and non-unity ratio of heat capacity rate, each stream number of transfer unit is adopted as the basic design variable instead of the exchanger number of transfer unit. It is found that there exists a unique relation between the stream and exchanger number of transfer units regardless of the chevron angle and the plate length. In addition, for a given value of the pressure drop the heat transfer area per unit mass flow rate can be expressed in terms of the stream number of transfer unit only. These two relationships in the form of simple plots constitute the framework of design. The sample results in comparison with the available data indicate that the present procedure includes the previous ones as a subset, and that every design method is affected essentially by the selection of specific correlations for the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor.

  • The present study investigated the effects of the experimental parameters on the cooling characteristics of the multichip module cooled by the indirect liquid cooling method using water, PF-5060, and paraffin slurry. The experimental parameters were coolants including Paraffin slurry with mass fraction of 2.5~7.5%, heat flux of 10~40W/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for the simulated VLSI chips and Reynolds numbers of 3,000~20,000. The size of paraffin slurry was constant as 10~40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ before and after the experiment. The chip surface temperatures for paraffin slurry were lower than those for water and PF-5060. The local heat transfer coefficients for the paraffin slurry were larger than those for water and the local heat transfer coefficients reached a row-number-independent and thermally-fully-developed value approximately after the third row. The local Nusselt numbers for paraffin slurry with a mass fraction of 7.5% were larger by 20~38% than those for water. The paraffin slurry with a mass fraction of 5% shelved the best thermal and hydrodynamic characteristics when local heat transfer and pressure drop were considered simultaneously.
