An improved mechanistic model was developed to predict a convective boiling critical heat flux (CHF) in the vertical round tubes with uniform heat fluxes. The CHF formula for subcooled and low quality boiling was derived from the local conservation equations of mass, energy and momentum, together with appropriate constitutive relations. The model is characterized by the momentum balance equation to determine the limiting transverse interchange of mass flux crossing the interface of wall bubbly layer and core by taking account of the convective shear effect due to the frictional drag on the wall-attached bubbles. Comparison between the present model predictions and experimental CHF data from several sources shows good agreement over a wide range of How conditions. The present model shows comparable prediction accuracy with the CHF look-up table of Groeneveld et al. Also the model correctly accounts for the effects of flow variables as well as geometry parameters.

An experiment was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the evaporation heat transfer for refrigerant R-134a flowing in a plate and shell heat exchanger. The data are useful in designing more compact and effective evaporators for various refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Two vertical counterflow channels were formed in the exchanger. The R-134a flows up in one channel exchanging heat with the hot water flowing down in the other channel. The effects of the average heat flux, mass flux, saturation temperature and vapor quality were examined in detail. The present data show that the evaporation heat transfer coefficient increases with the vapor quality. A rise in the refrigerant mass flux causes an increase in the $h_r$ value. A rise in the average imposed heat flux causes an increase in the $h_r$, value at the low quality. Finally, at a higer refrigerant saturation temperature the $h_r$, value is found to be lower.

In this study, flow boiling experiments were performed using R-134a on a plain tube bundle. Tests were conducted for the following range of variables; quality from 0.1 to 0.9, mass flux from $8\;kg/m^2s$ to $26\;kg/m^2s$ and heat flux from $10\;kW/m^2s$ to $40\;kW/m^2s$. The heat transfer coefficients were strongly dependent on the heat flux. However, they were almost independent on the mass flux or quality. The data are compared with the modified Chen model, which satisfactorily () predicted the data. Original Chen model, however, did not adequately predict the effect of quality. The reason may be attributed to the flow pattern of the present test, where the bubbly flow prevailed for the entire test range. The heat transfer coefficients of the tube bundle were 6~40% higher than those of the single tube pool boiling.

The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$(R-744) in a horizontal tube was investigated experimentally. The main components or the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section consists of a smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of inner diameter of 4.57 mm. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to $500\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of -5 to $5^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to $40\;kW/m^2$. The test results showed the heat transfer of $CO_2$ has a greater effect on nucleate boiling more than convective boiling. Mass flux of $CO_2$ does not effect nucleate boiling too much. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, the best fit of the present experimental data is obtained with the correlation of Jung et al. But existing correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develope reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.
Experimental investigation on two-phase flow boiling heat transfer of R-410A and R-134a in horizontal small tubes is reported. The pressure drop and local heat transfer coefficients were obtained over heat flux range of 5 to $40\;kW/m^2$, mass flux range of 70 to $600\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature range of 2 to $12^{\circ}C$, and quality up to 1.0 in test section with inner tube diameters of 3.0 and 0.5 mm, and lengths of 2000 and 330 mm, respectively. The section was heated uniformly by applying a direct electric current to the tubes. The effects of mass flux, heat flux, and inner tube diameter, on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient are presented. The experimental results are compared against several existing correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for refrigerants in small tubes is developed.
Characteristics of R-22 and R-134a two-phase vaporization in horizontal small tubes were investigated experimentally. In order to obtain the local heat transfer coefficients, the test was ran under heat flux range of 10 to $40\;kW/m^2$, mass flux range of 200 to $600\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature range of 5 to $10^{\circ}C$, and quality up to 1.0. The test section, which was made of stainless steel tube and heated uniformly by applying an electric current to the tube directly, have inner tube diameters of 0.5, 1.5 and 3.0 mm, and lengths of 0.33 and 2.0 m. The effects on heat transfer coefficient of mass flux, heat flux and inner tube diameter were presented. The experimental heat transfer coefficients were compared with the predictions using existing heat transfer coefficient correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model, with considering the laminar flow, was developed.
Three-layer back propagation network (BPN) and genetic neural network (GNN) were developed in this study to predict the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) in conventional and small-diameter channels. The GNN has higher precision than BPN (with root mean square errors of 17.16% and 20.50%, respectively) and other correlations. The inputs include vapor quality x, mass flux G, heat flux q, diameter D and physical parameter φ, and the predicted flow boiling HTC is set as the outputs. Influences of input parameters on the flow boiling HTC are discussed based on the trained GNN: nucleate boiling promoted by a larger saturated pressure, a larger heat flux and a smaller diameter is dominant in small channels; convective boiling improved by a larger mass flux and a larger vapor quality is more significant in conventional channels. The HTC increases with pressure both in conventional and small channels. The HTC in conventional channels rises when mass flux increases but remains almost unaffected in small channels. A larger heat flux leads to the HTC growth in small channels and an increase of HTC was observed in conventional channels at a higher vapor quality. HTC increases inversely with diameter before dry out.

An experimental study on saturated flow boiling heat transfer of R113 was peformed in a vertical narrow rectangular channel with offset strip fins. Two-phase pressure gradients and boiling heat transfer coefficients in an electrically heated test section were measured in the range of quality $0{\sim}0.6$, mass flux $17{\sim}43kg/m^{2}s$, and heat flux of $500{\sim}3,000W/m^2$ Two-phase friction multipliers were determined as a function of Lockhart-Martinelli parameter. Local boiling heat transfer coefficients were analysed in terms of mass flux, heat flux and local vapor quality. Correlation for boiling heat transfer coefficients was proposed, which was in good agreement with experimental data.

The condensation heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants R-22, R-134a, and a binary refrigerant mixture R-410A flowing in a small diameter tube were investigated. The experiment apparatus consists of a refrigerant loop and a water loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a variable-speed pump, a mass flowmeter, an evaporator, and a condenser(test section). The water loop consists of a variable-speed pump, an isothermal tank, and a flowmeter. The condenser is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of smooth, horizontal copper tube of 3.38mm outer diameter and 1.77mm inner diameter. The length of test section is 1220mm. The refrigerant mass fluxes varied from 450 to 1050kg/(㎡$.$s) and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main results were summarized as follows ; in the case of single-phase flow, the heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing mass flux. The heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was higher than that of R-22 and R-134a, and the heat transfer for small diameter tubes were about 20% to 27% higher than those predicted by Gnielinski. In the case of two-phase flow, the heat transfer coefficients also increase with increasing mass flux and quality. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was slightly higher than that of R-22 and R-134a. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed significant deviations with experimental data except for the ranges of low quality and low mass flux.
The present paper dealt with flow heat transfer characteristics of R-410A vaporization in horizontal smooth microchannel. The test sections were made of stainless steel tube with inner diameters of 300 mm and length of 300 mm. The refrigerant was supplied with mass flux range of 260-600 kg/$m^2s$ and applied under operating heat flux range of 5-20 kW/$m^2$ using a direct electric current heating method. The in let saturation temperature was set at $10^{\circ}C$ and vapor quality up to 1.0. The influences of mass flux, heat flux and inner tube diameter on local heat transfer coefficients were presented. Comparison with existing heat transfer coefficient correlations was performed. An improved heat transfer coefficient correlation for refrigerant vaporization in microchannel based on superposition model was developed with a mean deviation of 14.01%.
