Cooling of nutrient solution is essential to improve the growth environment of crops in hydroponic culture during summer season in Korea. This study was carried out to provide fundamental data for development of the cooling system satisfying the required cooling load of nutrient solution in hydroponic greenhouse. A numerical model for prediction of the cooling load of nutrient solution in hydroponic greenhouse was developed, and the results by the model showed good agreements with those by experiments. Main factors effecting on cooling load were solar radiation and air temperature in weather data, and conductivity of planting board and area ratio of bed to floor in greenhouse parameters. Using the model developed, the design cooling load of nutrient solution in hydroponic greenhouse of 1,000$m^2$(300pyong) was predicted to be 95,000 kJ/hr in Suwon and the vicinity.

Heat and mass balance process modeling has been conducted for a coal-firing power plant to be used as a testbed facility for development of various plant systems and equipment. As the material and design of the boiler tube bundle and fuel conversion to the biomass have become major concerns, the process modeling is required to incorporate those features in its calculation. The simulation cases for two different generation load show the satisfying results compared to the operational data from the actual system. Based on the established process conditions, the hypothetical case using wood pellet has also been simulated. Additional calculations for the tube bundle has been conducted regarding the changes in the tube material and design.
There arc two methods to evaluate the combustion product, that is analysis method and measurement method. Properties of the combustion products, constituents, and quanties, can be used to calculate boiler efficiency and beat losses. Using combustion evaluation methods combustion calculation were performed at certain condition and analyze the results. In this paper by comparing the results between two methods, deviation, correction and possibility of site application were confirmed

Temporal behavior of the laser induced incandescence (LII) signal is often used for soot particle sizing, which is possible because the cooling behavior of a laser heated particle is dependent on the particle size. In present study, LII signals of soot particles are modeled using two non-linear coupled differential equations deduced from the energy- and mass-balance of the process. The objective of this study is to see the effects of particle size, laser fluence on soot temperature characteristics and cooling behavior. Together with this, we focus on validating our simulation code by comparing with other previous results. Results of normalized LII signals obtained from various laser fluence conditions showed a good agreement with that of Dalzell and Sarofim's. It could be found that small particles cool faster at a constant laser fluence. And it also could be observed that vaporization is dominant process of heat loss during first 100ns after laser pulse, then heat conduction played most important role while thermal radiation had little influence all the time.
A slag building simplified model was developed to determine wall heat flux of a Shell 300 MW coal gasifier. In the model 4 layers(particulate, sintered, molten slag, solidified slag) were considered and mass conservation and energy balance were used to obtain each slag layer's thickness and surface temperature. Thermo-chemical and fluid charateristics of the gasifier were studied with and without considering the slag model using commercial CFD code FLUENT. Consideration of the slag layer did not affect syn-gas mole fractions. However, the slag layer caused to increase the exit gas temperature by about 50 K.

In this paper, the integration issue, such as an air-side integration design between the gas turbine and air separation unit, is described and analyzed by the exergy and energy balance of the combined-cycle power block in an IGCC power plant. The results showed that the net power of the system was almost same, but that of the gas turbine was decreased as the integration degree increased. The highest exergy loss was occurred in the combustor of gas turbine, which was affected by the chemical reaction, heat conduction, mass diffusion, and viscous dissipation.
As the user demand for power plants becomes various, design objective becomes complicated. To review the system feasibility, system objective and evaluation criteria need to be newly defined. In this study, engineering design procedure of the multi-purpose power plant, such as barge-mounted combined cycle power plant with $CO_2$ capture, was shown as a previous work for the feasibility review of the system alternatives. For the system design, heat and mass balance for each system configuration was firstly performed. Using the thermal analysis results, conceptual design of system alternatives was carried out. And then, preliminary design of the major equipment was done. The engineering calculation results of this study would be used as the evaluation data for system feasibility review.
A process simulation model of pervaporation process has been developed as a design tool to analyse and optimize the dehyhration of organic solvents through a commercial scale of pervaporative plate-and-frame modules that contain a stack of membrane sheets. In the simulation model, the mass balance, the heat balance and the concentration balance are integrated in a finite elements-in-succession method to simulate the overall process. In the integration method, a feed channel between membrane sheets in the modules was taken as differential unit element volume to simplify calculation procedure and shorten computing time. Some of permeation parameters used in the simulation model, were quantified directly from the dehydration experiment of ethanol through $AzeoSep^{TM}$-2002 membrane which is a commercial pervaporation membrane. The simulation model was verified by comparing the simulated values with experimental data. Using the model, continuous and batch pervaporation processes were simulated, respectively, to acquire basic data for analysing and optimizing in the dehydration of ethanol through the membrane. Based on the simulation results, a comparison between the continuous and the batch pervaporation processes would be discussed.
This study describes data from determination of the optimum mix proportion and site application of the mass concrete placed in bottom slab and side wall having a large depth and section as main structures of LNG in-ground tank. This concrete requires low heat hydration, excellent balance between workability and consistency because concreting work of LNG in-ground tank is usually classified by under-pumping, adaptation of longer vertical and horizontal pumping line than ordinary pumping condition. For this purpose, low heat Portland cement and lime stone powder as cementitious materials are selected and design factors including unit cement and water content, water-binder ratio, fine aggregate ratio and adiabatic temperature rising are tested in the laboratory and batch plant. As experimental results, the optimum unit cement and water content are selected under $270kg/m^3$ and $l55{\~}l60 kg/m^3$ separately to control adiabatic temperature rising below $30^{\circ}C$ and to improve properties of the fresh and hardened concrete. Also, considering test results of the confined water ratio($\beta$p) and deformable coefficient(Ep), $30\%$ of lime stone powder by cement weight is selected as the optimum replacement ratio. After mix proportions of 5cases are tested and compared the adiabatic temperature rising($Q^{\infty}$, r), tensile and compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, teases satisfied with the required performances are chosen as the optimum mix design proportions of the side wall and bottom slab concrete. $Q^{\infty}$ and r are proved smaller than those of another project. Before application in the site, properties of the fresh concrete and actual mixing time by its ampere load are checked in the batch plant. Based on the results of this study, the optimum mix proportions of the massive concrete are applied successfully to the bottom slab and side wall in LNG in-ground tank.
The steam line break accident for Kori Unit 1 is analyzed by a code SYSRAN which calculates nuclear power and heat flux using the point kinetics equation and the lumped-parameter model and calculates system transient using the mass and energy balance equation with the assumption of uniform reactor coolant system pressure. The 1.4 f $t^2$ steam line break accident is analyzed at EOL (End of Life), hot shutdown condition in which case the accident would be most severe. The steam discharge rate is assumed to follow the Moody critical flow model. The results reveal the peak heat flux of 38% of nominal full power value at 60 second after the accident initiates, which is higher than the FSAR result of 26%. Trends for the transient are in good agreement with FSAR results. A sensitivity study shows that this accident is most sensitive to the moderator density coefficient and the lower plenum mixing factor. The DNBR calculation under the assumption of $F_{{\Delta}H}$=3.66, which is used in the FSAR with all the control and the shutdown assemblies inserted except one B bank assembly and of Fz=1.55 shows that minimum DNBR reaches 1.62 at 60 second, indicating that the fuel failure is not anticipated to occur. The point kinetics equation, the lumped-parameter model and the system transient model which uses the mass and energy balance equation are verified to be effective to follow the system transient phenomena of the nuclear power plants.lear power plants.
