  • Electricity generation through fossil fuels has caused environmental pollution. To solve this problem, research on new renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal heat, etc.) to replace fossil fuels is in progress. These devices are able to consistently generate power. However, they have many drawbacks, such as high installation costs and limitations in possible set-up environments. Thus, piezoelectric harvesting technology, which is able to overcome the limitations of existing energy technologies, is actively being studied. Piezoelectric harvesting technology uses the piezoelectric effect which occurs in crystals that generate voltage when stress is applied. Therefore, it has advantages such as a wider installation base and lower technological cost. In this study, a piezoelectric energy harvesting device based on constant wave motion was investigated. This device can regenerate electricity in a constant turbulent flow in the middle of the sea. The components of the device are circuitry, a steel bar, an bimorph piezoelectric element and buoyancy elements. In addition, a multiphysical analysis coupled with the structure and piezoelectric elements was conducted to estimate the performance of the device. With this piezoelectric energy harvesting device, the displacement and electric power were analyzed.

  • It is well known that a partial-discharge(PD) in insulation oil is the source of various physical and chemical phenomena, such as heat, light, gas, chemical transformation, electric current, electromagnetic radiation and ultrasonics. The PD can be detected by measuring one of these changes. Although some techniques are employed in this purpose, several obstacles interfere with an on-line measurement. Ultrasonic-wave detection is a useful method for the diagnosis of the transformer-insulation condition. Conventionally, ulyrasonic waves are detected by Piezo-electric transducer, but we use optical method that has many advantages. In this paper, we constructed a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with optical fiber and investigated the principle of operation. Test arrangement is based on the needle-plane electrode system in oil and applied AC high voltage. Ultrasonic waves were detected and analyzed with wavelet transform.

  • There have been a number of major fatal fire accidents in Korea recently. The number of fires in 2017 were 44,178, which is not only increasing number of fires but also increasing in casualties. Particularly, the fire at Jecheon Sports Center, which suffered many casualties, is expected to have a huge impact. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet, but heat waves on the ceiling have also been pointed out. As such, the copper heating waves, which are used as a preventive measure against damage of pipes due to freezing of pipes, etc., always have a fire hazard. To determine the possibility of a flame-resistant heated fire, a positive electric cable product was used to artificially ignite and analyze the results. In case of a short circuit, the external covering of the positive electric cable is damaged, but not short circuit unless the heating material surrounding the wire is damaged. Due to the characteristics of heating cable for preventing copper waves, the chances of insulation becoming more severe due to moisture and temperature changes are higher than normal wires. If the internal heating system is carbonized by insulating deterioration without damage to the outer coating, it is likely to cause trekking, to form a winding loop in the heating materials, and to cause short circuit in the heated materials. For the positive temperature line, if the middle is shorted, the current continues to flow to the short circuit unless the breaker disconnects. Consequently, a heated fire that does not cut off the power immediately may leave multiple marks or cuts.

  • Climate change has a broad impact on the entire water environment, and this impact is growing. Climate adaptation in water supply systems often involves quantity and quality control, but there has been a lack of research examining the impacts of climatic factors on water supply productivity and operation conditions. Therefore, the present study focused on, first, building a database of climatic factors and water purification operating conditions, and then identifying the correlations between factors to reveal their impacts. News big data was analyzed with keywords of climatic factors and water supply systems in either nationwide or region-wide analyses. Metropolitan area exhibited more issues with cold waves whereas there were more issues with drought in the Southern Chungcheong area. A survey was conducted to seek experts' opinions on the climatic impacts leading to these effects. Pre-chlorination due to drought, high-turbidity of intake water due to rainfall, an increase of toxins in intake water due to heat waves, and low water temperature due to cold waves were expected. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted based on meteorological data and the operating data of a water purification plant. Heavy rain resulted in 13 days of high turbidity, and the subsequent low turbidity conditions required 3 days of high coagulant dosage. This insight is expected to help inform the design of operation manuals for waterworks in response to climate change.

  • The characteristics of heat wave events in Seoul are analyzed using weather station data from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) ERA-Interim reanalysis data from 1979 to 2016. Heat waves are defined as events in the upper 10th percentile of the daily maximum temperatures. The associated synoptic weather patterns are then classified into six clusters through Self-Organizing Map (SOM) analysis for sea-level pressure anomalies in East Asia. Cluster 1 shows an anti-cyclonic circulation and weak troughs in southeast and west of Korea, respectively. This synoptic pattern leads to southeasterly winds that advect warm and moist air to the Korean Peninsula. Both clusters 2 and 3 are associated with southerly winds formed by an anti-cyclonic circulation over the east of Korea and cyclonic circulation over the west of Korea. Cluster 4 shows a stagnant weather pattern with weak winds and strong insolation. Clusters 5 and 6 are associated with F?hn wind resulting from an anti-cyclonic circulation in the north of the Korean Peninsula. In terms of long-term variations, event frequencies of clusters 4 and 5 show increasing and decreasing trends, respectively. However, other clusters do not show any long-term trends, indicating that the mechanisms that drive heat wave events in Seoul have remained constant over the last four decades.

  • This study aimed to identify heat wave vulnerable areas and discuss spatial typology and policy directions through spatial coincidence analysis of heat wave damage. By utilizing the climate change vulnerability assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Spatial Statistics Comparison Analysis, this study examined cities, counties, and districts in South Korea for five years (2015-2019), including 2018, when the heat wave was most extreme. It was determined that the number of heat wave days (exposure) was the most impactful among various factors for heat wave vulnerability. Sensitivity and adaptive capacity to heat waves were found to vary according to regional characteristics. The relationship between heat wave vulnerability and damage was categorized into four types through spatial coherence. Hot to Hot and Cold to Cold types have a positive relationship between vulnerability and damage, while Hot to Cold and Cold to Hot types have a negative relationship. The findings suggest that since different types of regions have distinct characteristics and conditions, policies and research for improvement should be directed to address each region separately. This study may be used as basic data for establishing heat-related policies in the future, as it categorizes regions by considering both heat vulnerability and damage and examines the direction of response by type.

  • As electromagnetic waves are affected by electrical conductivity or permittivity, they are widely used to evaluate geotechnical characteristics. In this study, a probe for measuring electromagnetic waves using a time domain reflectometry is manufactured to evaluate heavy metal concentration in saline water. In the experiments, a copper is used as a heavy metal, and a probe is demonstrated with the concentration of copper. Solutions were set for 8 different copper concentration (0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10 mg/L) in saline water with 3% salinity. The probe is coated by electrical insulating materials such as epoxy, top-coat, varnish, acrylic paint, heat-shrinkage tube to measure electromagnetic waves in saline water. The measured signals are compared according to coating material. As results, for probes coated with acrylic paint and heat-shrinkage tube, signal variation is not detected. For epoxy, top-coat, and varnish coated probes, the voltage decreases with an increase of copper concentration. Probes coated by epoxy at once and top coat can estimate under 5 mg/L of copper concentration and the probe coated by epoxy twice can estimate over 5 mg/L of copper concentration. This study shows that the probe using the time domain reflectometry can be used to evaluate the concentration of heavy metal in saline water by coating the probe with insulating material.

  • The deterioration of the urban heat environment due to climate change and the occurrence of heat-related diseases have emerged as one of the major social problems. This has led to more research on climate change, including heat waves, but it is mainly focused on climate factors. However, the urban heat island phenomenon accelerates the summer heat wave, and the increasing trend of heat-related patients in urban areas suggests the impact of the city's environment. Thus, this study analyzed the effects of physical and social characteristics of urban areas on heat-related patients in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The analysis showed that the ratio of the total area of residential, commercial and industrial facilities, the main source of heat energy locality, among the land use statuses, was not statistically significant, but the road area and the green area were found to have a positive and negative The population density and the percentage of people aged 65 or older, the percentage of people living alone and the proportion of people receiving basic living were all shown to be significant, with only the ratio of elderly living alone and the ratio of population density having negative effects. The results of the study can be used to develop urban policy alternatives related to local warming patients.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between heat wave and river water quality. The daily maximum air temperature (Tmax) of 91 meteorological stations of the Korea Meteorological Administration and 13 river water quality factors (DO, BOD, COD, TOC, TN, DTN, NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, TP, DTP, PO4-P, Chl-a) of Ministry of Environment were analyzed. The correlation analysis was performed on Tmax and water quality factors, and the determination coefficients (R2) of DO, Chl-a, and TN with Tmax showed high values of 0.782, 0.609, and 0.691 respectively. To analyze the spatial impact between heat waves and water quality factors, the heat wave intensity (HWI) and heat wave duration (HWD) were calculated using the Tmax. The hotspot and spatial statistical analyses were applied for spatial impact evaluation. As a result of hotspot analysis, the heat wave index (HWD, HWI) showed high spatial pattern in the downstream of Nakdong River basin, and Chl-a and TN showed the same pattern. In case of spatial statistical analysis for water quality due to heat wave, the most obvious spatial variability was DO.
