The laminar natural convection of air in 2-D rectangular enclosure in which two opposing isothermal walls were kept at different temperatures is investigated numerically for Rayleigh number up to $10^6$. Computations were performed for the width-to-height ratios of 1, 2, and 4, and for the inclination angle range of $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}90^{\circ}$. For each aspect ratio, the influence of the inclination angle on the flow patterns and heat transfer rates were examined for $10^3{\leq}Ra{\leq}10^6$. It is found that the growth of secondary flow in the corners led to the decrease in overall heat transfer for small aspect ratio case, and the transition from a three-cell structure to a unicell flow pattern in large aspect ratio led to a step-like change in heat transfer. A new correlation of mean Nusselt number is presented for the vertical case of ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$.

A finned-tube-type evaporator module has been proposed for a 2 t/h-class water-tube-type industrial boiler with multiple burners. The geometry of the fins was changed at each module to equalize the evaporation. The modules were designed by considering the energy balance at each row rather than by following a conventional bulk design procedure. The designed module was built into a 2 t/h-class water-tube-type boiler, and its performance was tested. A numerical simulation was also conducted to evaluate the two- or three-dimensional effects of factors such as the inlet conditions. The numerical simulation also included the conjugate heat transfer problem to predict the fin tip temperature. The heat transfer coefficient with fins is lower than that obtained from the empirical correlation of a bare tube. The fin tip temperature from CFD is higher than that from the analytical solution.
The cooling heat transfer characteristics of supercritical $CO_2$ in a helical coil gas cooler on the change of coil diameters are experimentally investigated. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable speed pump, a mass flow-meter, a pre-heater and a helical coil gas cooler (test section). The test sections are made of a copper tube which the inner diameter is 4.55 mm and the helical coil diameters are done of 26.75 mm and 41.35 mm. The mass fluxes of refrigerant are varied from 200 to 800 [$kg/m^2s$] and the inlet pressures of gas cooler are 7.5 to 10.0 (MPa). A gas cooler with helical coil diameter of 26.75 mm has larger heat transfer coefficient than that of 41.35 mm. Also, when compared with experimental data and published correlations avaliable, most of correlations are under-predicted, but Pitla published correlations avaliable, most of correlations are under-predicted, but Pitla et al.'s correlation shows a relatively good coincidence with the experimental data except the region of pseudo critical temperature.

This paper introduces an optimized design for a sensor bracket used to measure the wear amount of an automobile brake pad, based on a dynamic kriging surrogate model. During testing, the temperature of the brake pad can increase beyond 600℃, which often causes sensor malfunction. Therefore, it is essential to optimize the shape of the sensor bracket to minimize heat transfer. To reduce the computational cost of the optimization, the heat-transfer simulation is replaced by a dynamic kriging surrogate model. Dynamic kriging utilizes the best combination of correlation and basis functions and constructs an accurate surrogate model. Following optimization, the temperature of the sensor position decreases by 7.57%. The results from the surrogate model under optimum conditions are verified by a heat-transfer simulation, and the design optimization using a surrogate model is found to be effective.

In this study, we experimentally investigate of a two-phase natural circulation loop that functions as a passive containment cooling system (PCCS). The experimental apparatus comprises two loops: a hot loop, for simulating containment under severe accidents, and a natural circulation loop, for simulating the PCCS. The experiment is conducted by controlling the pressure and inlet temperature of the hot loop in the range of 0.59-0.69 MPa (abs) and 119.6-158.8 ℃, respectively. The heat balance of the hot loop is established and compared with a natural circulation loop to assess the thermal reliability of the experimental apparatus, and an additional system is installed to measure the vapor mass flow rate. Furthermore, the thermal-hydraulic characteristics are considered in terms of a temperature, mass flow rate, heat transfer coefficient (HTC), etc. The flow rate of the natural circulation loop is induced primarily by flashing, and a distortion is observed in the local HTC because of the fully develop as well as subcooled boiling. As a result, we present the amount of heat capacity that the PCCS can passively remove according to the experimental conditions and compared the heat transfer performance using Chen's and Dittus-Boelter correlation.

The critical conditions marking the onset of thermally induced vortices over an inclined iso-thermal plate are investigated using the linear stability theory. The stability equations are simplified by estimating the orders of magnitude of respective terms. The analysis is carried out under the assumption that for the system of large Prandtl numbers temperature disturbances are initiated within the conventional thermal boundary layer of the basic flow. The stability criteria obtained from the present results agree well with those of the existing quasi-parallel flow models. In addition it is found that the critical conditions generate the heat transfer correlation in good agreement with experiments. Therefore, it is suggested that the validity of existing theoretical models will be reexamined.

The circuit board of an electronic equipment were simulated with a vertical channel which had thermal blocks protruded from one of the channel walls. A rought front plate was made of a circuit board attached with short wires to simulate the back side of a printed circuit board. Natural convection experiments were carried out to study the effects of channel space and rough front plate and to find the suitable characteristic value after the fourth row. The effect of a rough front plate was negligble. There were negligible effects of the channel space on the first and second heaters. Heat transfer coefficients after the third row decreased as the channel space decreased. Heat transfer coefficients were almost constant for larger than 20 mm channel space. A characteristic length was suggested to non-dimensionalize Nu and Ra numbers in a vertical channel with protruded heaters. A correlation was obtained using the new characteristic lengths.

A rectangular test section is devised by assuming two dimensional melting of a solid phase change material heated from two sides which are maintained at constant temperature and allowing a free expansion due to density difference between solid and liquid. The timewise melting shape is recorded photographically by the shadow graph method for several experimental conditions. The analysis shows that the melting process consists of four regimes. At first, the pure conduction heat transfer is dominant, and as time goes by natural convection grows and plays a role greatly. Experiments are carried out varying not only the wall temperature but height of the wall. Each effect of them on the melting process is obtained in the form of combination of dimensionless parameters, $Ste^{0.8}\;FoRa^{0.2}$. An algebraic correlation is suggested, which predicts the melted fraction well.
Nucleate pool boiling of water in vertical annuli at atmospheric pressure has been studied experimentally and two empirical correlations have been suggested to obtain effects of geometric parameters on heat transfer. Data of the present and the previous tests range over a tube length of 0.50-0.57 m, a diameter of 16.5-34.0 mm, and an annular gap size of 3.7-44.3 mm. Through the analysis, tube bottom confinement (open or closed) has been investigated, as well. The developed correlations predict experimental data within a ${\pm}25%$ error bound. It has been identified that effects of the diameter and the length of heated tubes as well as the annular gap size should be counted into the analyses to estimate heat transfer coefficients accurately.

The present paper investigates the heat transfer characteristics in a cylinder packed with porous medium of solid spheres for various parameters such as mass flow rate, sphere diameter, length of the porous medium, and gas temperatures. Pressures and temperatures at the inlet and outlet regions were measured by using static pressure gages and R-type thermocouples. The modified relationship based on the Ergun equation is suggested for the estimation of pressure drops. In addition, the useful empirical correlation for thermal efficiency is obtained in the current study. Thermal efficiency is expressed in terms of non-dimensional time, sphere diameter, porosity, and pressure drops. It is also found that the pressure drop through the cylinder becomes larger as the gas temperature does higher at the inlet region, whereas it substantially decreases when the inlet flow rate decreases.
