In rocket systems, somtimes special devices or equipments are installed near the nozzle exit area where high temperature and pressure combustion gas flows. To pretect these subsystems from severe thermal environment, it is necessary to have accurate thermal data measured from the experimental liquid rocket firing test. Test variables were combustion pressure (200, 300, 400 psi) and mixture ratio (1.5, 2.0, 2.5) and quartz was used as a heat probe. Measurement technique used in this research can be also applied to measure the radiative heat flux inside the combustion chamber which is important imput data for the liquid rocket regenerative cooling system design.

A suspended membrane micro fluidic heat flux sensor that is able to measure the heat flow rate was designed and fabricated by a complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible process. The combination of a thirty-junction gold and nickel thermoelectric sensor with an ultralow noise preamplifier, low pass filter, and lock-in amp has enabled the resolution of 50 nW power and provides the sensitivity of $11.4\;mV/{\mu}W$. The heater modulation method was used to eliminate low frequency noises from sensor output. It is measured with various heat flux fluid of DI-water to test as micro fluidic application. In order to estimate the heat generation of samples from the output measurement of a micro fluidic heat-flux sensor, a methodology for modeling and simulating electro-thermal behavior in the micro fluidic heat-flux sensor with integrated electronic circuit is presented and validated. The electro-thermal model was constructed by using system dynamics, particularly the bond graph. The electro-thermal system model in which the thermal and the electrical domain are coupled expresses the heat generation of samples converts thermal input to electrical output. The proposed electro-thermal system model shows good agreement with measured output voltage response in transient state and steady-state.

The gasoline engine tends to high performance, fuel economy, small-sized. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the problems on thermal load, abnormal combustion, etc, in the engine, Thine film instantaneous temperature measurement probe was made. And the manufactural method of probe was established. The instantaneous surface temperatures in the constant volume combustion chamber were measured by this probe and the heat flux was obtained by Fourier analysis. The authors measured the wall temperature of combustion chamber and computed the heat flux through the cylinder wall in order to understand the combustion characteristics depending on height of probe. For achieving this goal, the thin film instantaneous temperature probe was developed for analyzing the instantaneous surface wall temperature and unsteady heat flux on the constant volume combustion chamber.
The stabilization of propane/air lean premixed flames by a heated cylindrical rod is investigated experimentally. The flame stability limits, heat flux, surface temperatures, equivalence ratios, and mixture velocities are measured in order to understand the role of heat flux or surface temperature on the flame stabilization of lean premixed flames. The flame stability limits are lowered by a heated cylindrical rod and extended even below the flammability limit of propane/air mixture when sufficient heat flux is provided. The flame stability limit decreases with the increase of heat flux or surface temperature and decreases with the higher mixture velocity. The diameter of cylindrical rod, however, dose not significantly affect the flame stability limit. The laminar flame speed has been measured for ultra lean propane/air premixed flames. The flame stabilization by a heated cylindrical rod provides the useful tool for the measurement of flame speed under very fuel-lean conditions.

Cycle test for developed phase change material (PCM) is necessary in order to assess the variation of latent heat, which decreases with time by deterioration. T-history method and measurement using heat-flux meter are appropriate for the cycle test in a tube filled with PCM because they do not need an extraction of sample in measuring heat of fusion. In the present study, these methods were applied to a PCM having a melting point below a room temperature, different to the past studies for PCMs melting above a room temperature. As a result of experiment using pure water as specimen, we can obtained rea-sonable values for heat of fusion.

Cycle test for developed phase change material (PCM) is necessary in order to analyze the variation of latent heat, which decreases with time by deterioration. 7-history method and measurement using heat flux meter are appropriate for the cycle test in a tube filled with PCM because they do not need an extraction of sample in measuring the heat of fusion. In the present study, these methods were applied to a PCM having a melting point below a room temperature, different from the past studies for PCMs melting above a room temperature. As a result of experiment using pure water as specimen, we can obtain reason-able values for heat of fusion by both methods.
An experimental study was conducted to identify the quantitative measurement bias for the bare-bead thermocouple (TC), which was widely used for measuring temperature in fire experiments. To this end, an apparatus could be controlled individually gas flow rate, preheating temperature and incident radiative heat flux was developed to simulate the thermal environments of fire. A relative measurement bias of bare-bead TC was evaluated with the comparison of double-shield aspirated TC. As a result, the relative measurement bias of bare-bead TC was gradually increased with the increase in radiative heat flux with constant gas temperature. The relative bias was also significantly increased with the decrease in gas temperature. Quantitatively, at the gas temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, the bare-bead TC had the relative bias of approximately 400% with the radiative heat flux of $20kW/m^2$ corresponding to thermal radiation level of the flashover. The present study was intend to provide fire researchers with methodologies for the reanalyses of temperature measured using bare-bead TC, radiation corrections, and validation of fire modeling.
The combustion characteristics and combustion heat of sandwich panel cores were analysed using variable external irradiation level. The characteristics such as ignition time, critical heat flux, ignition temperature and surface temperature profile were measured. Fuel samples were exposed to incident heat fluxes from 15 to $50\;kW/m^2$. For the measurement of various combustion characteristics, the size of specimen was $100\;mm\;{\times}\;100\;mm\;{\times}\;50\;mm$ and the samples were 3 different kinds. As results, Type B showed the best characteristics in measurement of combustion heat and ignition temperature and Type C showd the best characteristics in critical heat flux and surface temperature profile than that of the other two. In conclusion, we knew that Type C had the best performance in fire safety from all data of this study.
The objective of the present work is to develop a precise instrument for measuring the thermal property of insulating material over a temperature range from 30 K to near room temperature by utilizing a cryocooler. The instrument consists of two thermal links, a test sample, heat sink, heat source and vacuum vessel. The cold head of the cryocooler as a heat sink is thermally anchored to the thermal link and used to bring the apparatus to a desired temperature in a vacuum chamber. An electric heater as a heat source is placed in the middle of test sample for generating uniform heat flux. The entire apparatus is covered by thermal shields and wrapped in multi-layer insulation to minimize thermal radiation in a vacuum chamber. For a supplied heat flux the temperature distribution in the insulating material is measured in steady and transient state. The thermal conductivity of insulating material is measured from temperature difference for a given heat flux. In addition, the specific heat of insulating material is obtained by solving one-dimensional heat diffusion equation.
This study assessed the measurement errors and improvement of the spatial resolution through miniaturization of the plate thermometer used to measure the heat flux in a fire environment. As a result, the heat loss to the side of plate thermometer was found to have a significant influence on the measurement error through analysis of the measurement values according to the thickness and density change to the insulation installed on the back side of the plate. Based on the existing 10 cm square shape, it was also confirmed that the 3 cm size plate thermometer could measure the heat flux with satisfactory accuracy through miniaturization. These results are expected to be useful for accurate measurements of the heat flux at local locations in a fire environment.
