Falling liquid plays a role in a wide variety of naturally occurring phenomena as well as in the operation of industrial process equipment where heat and mass transfer take place. In such cases, it is required that the falling film should spread widely on the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface. An addition of surface active agent to a falling liquid film affects the flow characteristics of the falling film. In this study the heat transfer characteristics for a falling liquid film has been investigated by an addition of the surface active agents. The falling liquid film was formed on a vertical flat plate. As the mass flow rate of liquid falling film is increased, the wetted area is a little increased while the heat transfer rate as well as heat transfer coefficient is significantly increased. It is also found that both wetted area and heat transfer rate is substantially increased while heat transfer coefficient is a little increased with an increase in the surfactant concentration at a given mass flow rate.
The critical heat flux of spray cooling were measured on the test surface of 10 mm diameter made by stainless steel. The experiments were carried out for the droplet-flow-rate of $0.00002{\sim}0.003m^3/(m^2s)$ and liquid subcooling temperature of $40{\sim}75^{\circ}C$. Experimental results showed that the critical heat flux of spray cooling increased remarkably with the increase of droplet-flow-rate. Meanwhile, the effect of liquid subcooling on critical heat flux of spray cooling appeared weakly under the present experimental conditions. In additions, correlation between the dimensionless critical heat flux and Weber number based on droplet-floe-rate was developed for experimental results.
This study aims to explore the heat transfer and flow phenomena inside an instant water heater and the influence of the design parameters of the water heater on the heating performance was investigated by 3-D numerical simulations considering heat convection. The design parameters are the heating ceramic dimension, the power of the heating device, and the water flow rate. The results show that a reasonable space for the heating device is required to optimize the heating performance. It is desirable to design higher heating device as possible for a given electric power. There exists a critical water flow rate that best meets the heating performance. The change in electric power has no impact on the flow phenomena and heating performance.
This experimental study measured and analyzed the heat transfer and pressure drop performance of brazed plate heat exchangers. Heat exchangers with different plate numbers of 10, 20, 30, and 40 were used for measurement, and their plate pattern was identical. The experiment was performed with distilled water, by changing the hot-side flow rate, with the cold-side flow rate fixed. The experimental results were compared with the calculated values by correlations based on gasketed plate heat exchangers, and showed that the heat transfer performance and pressure drop of brazed plated heat exchangers were higher than those of gasketed plate heat exchangers. From the variation of the friction factor, it could be inferred that in the flow channels of brazed plate heat exchangers, turbulent flow occurred at Reynolds numbers higher than 500. A new correlation to predict the Nusselt number was developed, and its absolute average deviation was 2.62%, compared with the values from the experimental data.
Recently, microturbines have received attention as a small-scale distributed power generator. Since the exhaust gas carries all of the heat release, the microturbine CHP (combined heat and power) system is relatively compact and easy to maintain. Generating hot water or steam is usual method of heat recovery from the microturbine. In this work, a heat recovery unit producing hot water was installed at the exhaust side of a 30 kW class microturbine and its performance characteristics following microturbine power variation was investigated. Heat recovery performance has been compared for different operating conditions such as constant hot water temperature and constant water flow rate. In particular, the influence of water flow rate and hot water temperature on the recovered heat was analyzed.
A Beta-type Stirling engine is developed and tested on the operation stability and cycle performance. The flow rate for cooling water ranges from 300 to 1500 ml/min, while the temperature of heat source changes from 300 to $500^{\circ}C$. The internal pressure, working temperatures, and operation speed are measured and the engine performance is estimated from them. In the experiment, the rise in the temperature of heat source reduces internal pressure but increases operation speed, and overall, enhances the power output. The faster coolant flow rate contributes to the high temperature limit for stable operation, the cycle efficiency due to the alleviated thermal expansion of power piston, and the heat input to the engine, respectively. The experimental Stirling engine showed the maximum power output of 12.1 W and the cycle efficiency of 3.0 % when the cooling flow is 900 ml/min and the heat source temperature is $500^{\circ}C$.
Exhaust gas of an industrial furnace used at such as metallurgy or ceramic manufacturing usually contains thermal energy with high temperature which can be recycled by heat exchanger. However, when the temperature of the exhaust gas is high such as more than $1,000^{\circ}C$, ordinary metallic heat exchanger cannot fully recover the heat due to the limitation of operating temperature depending on the material property. In the present study, a compact ceramic heat exchanger of cross flow type is introduced and evaluated by heat exchange rate and operating temperature. The ceramic heat exchanger can endure the gas temperature more than $1,300^{\circ}C$, and its volumetric heat exchanging rate exceeds 1 MW/$m^3$. The experimental data is also compared with the previous numerical result which shows reasonable agreement. Meanwhile, the gas leakage rate is measured to be about 3~4%, and heat loss to environmental air is about 23~26% of the fuel energy.
The length and position of the inlet port on the double tube heat exchanger is analyzed by CFX ver.11 for studying the characteristic of its flow distribution. When the boundary conditions of the inlet temperature and mass flow rate were each $20^{\circ}C$ and 10 ~ 50 kg/min, 3 models that are based on the distance between the inlet port and the center of the heat exchanger(0, 5.025, 10.05 mm) were analyzed to find the uniformity of the flow rate. Based on the flow rate, 4 lengths (23.723, 33.890, 44.057, 57.274 mm) were used to study the flow distribution according to Reynolds Number. The results show that, when the distance from the inlet to the position of the center of the heat exchanger is 10.05 mm and the length is 57.274 mm, the flow distribution is the most unified.
For the heat and fluid flow analyses of a parallel flow heat exchanger, an improved model considering the effect of flat tube with micro-channels is proposed. The effect of flow distribution on the thermal performance of a heat exchanger is numerically investigated. The flow distribution is examined by varying geometrical parameters, i.e., the position of the separators and the inlet/outlet, and the aspect ratio of micro-channels of the heat exchanger. The flow nonuniformities along the paths of the heat exchanger are proposed and observed to evaluate the thermal performance of the heat exchanger. The optimization using ALM method has been accomplished by minimizing the flow nonuniformity. It is found that the heat transfer rate of the optimized model is increased by 6.0% of that of the reference heat exchanger model, and the pressure drop by 0.4%
Compressor efficiency must be improved to reduce refrigerator power consumption. In this study, the heat dissipation rate through the compressor housing is increased via gap flow passages between the compressor body and housing. Four types of gap flow passages are considered for achieving the maximum heat-dissipation rate. In addition, thermal analysis is performed to examine the effect of increased heat dissipation rate on the energy efficiency ratio (EER). The results show that the heat dissipation rate, compressor superheat, and compressor EER increased by up to approximately 52%, 3 ℃, and approximately 1%, respectively.
