  • Shape optimization of internally finned circular tube has been peformed for periodically fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer. The physical domain considered in this study is very complicated due to periodic boundary conditions both streamwise and circumferential directions. Therefore, Pareto frontier sets of a heat exchanger can be acquired by coupling the CFD and the multi-objective genetic algorithm, which is a global optimization technique. The optimal values of fin widths $(d_1,\;d_2)$ and fin height (H) are numerically obtained by minimizing the pressure loss and maximizing the heat transfer rate within ranges of $d_1=0.2\sim1.5\;mm,\;d_2=0.2\sun1.5\;mm,\;and\;H=0.2\sim1.5\;mm$. The optimal values of the design variables are acquired after the fifth generation and also compared to those of a local optimization algorithm for the same geometry and conditions.

  • This paper presents the optimization of expanding velocity for tube expanding process in the manufacturing of a heat exchanger. In specific, the expanding velocity has a great influence on the performance of a heat exchanger because it is a key variable determining the quantity of tube expending at assembly stage as well as a key Parameter determining overall production rate. The simulation showed that the genetic algorithm used in this paper resulted in the optimal tube expanding velocity by performing the following series of iteration; the generation of arbitrary population for tube expanding parameters, consequently the generation of tube expanding velocities, the evaluation of tube expanding quantity using the pre-trained data of plastic deformation by means of a neural network and finally the generation of next population using a penalty faction and a Roulette wheel method.

  • The expiration date of high energetic materials(HEM), such as HMX, RDX, TNT, is important. If the expiration date is violated, the expected specification of HEM would not be satisfied which may cause a different conclusion in an urgent situation. As a result, this HEM should maintain fresh conditions which cause the accumulation of waste HEM. If HEM is landfilled during demilitarization, the impact on living organizations is serious. Additionally, landfilling HEM has a possibility of explosion. In this research, the process flow diagram of the demilitarization gas treatment process was simulated while satisfying the law of the environment in Korea. After validation of simulation, it was optimized thermodynamically using Heat Exchanger Network Synthesis(HENs). This study is expected to enhance the energy efficiency of the original facility by suggesting developed designs. This research was supported by Agency of Defense Development NE32 Korea. • PEM fuel cell vehicles have been getting much attraction due to a sort of highly clean and effective transportation. The onboard fuel processor, however, is inevitably required to supply the hydrogen by conversion from some fuels since there are not enough available hydrogen stations nearby. A lot of studies have been focused on analyses of ATR reactor under the assumption of thermo-neutral condition and those of the optimized process for the minimization of energy consumption using thermal efficiency as an objective function, which doesn't guarantee the maximum hydrogen production. In this study, the analysis of optimization for 100 kW PEMFC onboard fuel processor was conducted targeting various fuels such as gasoline, LPG, diesel using newly defined hydrogen efficiency and keeping simply synthesized heat exchanger network regardless of external utilities leading to compactness and integration. Optimal result of gasoline case shows 9.43% reduction compared to previous study, which shows the newly defined objective function leads to better performance than thermal efficiency in terms of hydrogen production. The sensitivity analysis was also done for hydrogen efficiency, heat recovery of each heat exchanger, and the cost of each fuel. Finally, LPG was estimated as the most economical fuel in Korean market.

  • Inlet part of a printed circuit heat exchanger has been optimized by using three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes analysis and surrogate modeling techniques. Kriging model has been used as the surrogate model. The objective function for the optimization has been defined as a linear combination of uniformity of mass flow rate and the pressure loss with a weighting factor. For the optimization, the angle of the inlet plenum wall, radius of curvature of the inlet plenum wall, and width of the inlet pipes have been selected as design variables. Twenty six design points are obtained by Latin Hypercube Sampling in design space. Through the optimization, considerable improvement in the objective function has been obtained in comparison with the reference design of PCHE.

  • Since the revision of the Rationalization of Energy Use Law, the spread of new and renewable energy in buildings has been promoted. In addition, the production of electric power and thermal energy is an important issue in the change of energy paradigm centered on the use of distributed energy. Among them, geothermal energy is attracting attention as a high-performance energy-saving technology capable of coping with heating / cooling and hot water load by utilizing the constant temperature zone of the earth. However, there is a disadvantage that the initial investment cost is high as a method of calculating the capacity of a geothermal facility by calculating the maximum load. The disadvantages of these disadvantages are that the geothermal energy supply is getting stagnant and the design of the geothermal system needs to be supplemented. In this study, optimization design of geothermal system was carried out using optimization tool. As a result of the optimization, the ground heat exchanger decreased by 30.8%, the capacity of the heat pump decreased by 7.7%, and the capacity of the heat storage tank decreased by about 40%. The simulation was performed by applying the optimized value to the program and confirmed that it corresponds to the load of the building. We also confirmed that all of the constraints used in the optimization design were satisfied. The initial investment cost of the optimized geothermal system is about 18.6% lower than the initial investment cost.

  • Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) operates at high temperature, therefor has the advantage of higher power generation and using exhaust heat than other fuel cells. In particular, the reforming reaction can be performed inside the SOFC stack to reduce the cooling of the stack and the burden on the reformer reactor. In this study, the reformer structure, operating characteristics, and thermal efficiency were evaluated for the optimization design of a heat exchanger type reformer of a 1 kW SOFC system.
