  • This study concerns flow and heat transfer characteristics of FC-72 condensing flow in a micro-channel. A computational model of condensing flow with a hydraulic diameter of 1 mm is constructed using the FLUENT computational fluid dynamics code. The computed void fraction contour plots are presented for different mass velocities. The smooth-annular, wavy-annular, transition and slug flows are observed with the model, which are quite similar to those observed in a micro-channel experiment. The computed two-phase condensing heat transfer coefficient is compared with previous empirical correlation for two-phase condensation heat transfer in micro-channels.

  • This paper examined the MHD and thermal behavior of unsteady mixed convection flow of a rotating fluid in a porous parallel plate channel in the presence of Hall current and heat source. The exact solutions of the concentration, energy and momentum equations are obtained. The influence of each governing parameter on non dimensional velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction coefficient, rate of heat transfer and rate of mass transfer at the porous parallel plate channel surfaces is discussed. During the course of numerical computation, it is observed that as Hall current parameter and Soret number at the porous channel surfaces increases, the primary and secondary velocity profiles are increases while the primary and secondary skin friction coefficients are increases at the cold wall and decreases at the heated wall. In particular, it is noticed that a reverse trend in case of heat source parameter.

  • In this study, the performance characteristics of a welded plate heat exchanger was investigated experimentally. Performance tests were carried out according to the flow rate and inlet temperature of working fluid. As a result, the heat transfer capacity increased by 335.5 kW with an increasing the flow rate and temperature difference between hot and cold side. However, the overall heat transfer coefficient was increased with the increase of flow rate, and it was not effected significantly from inlet temperature difference between hot and cold working fluid. The pressure drop was increased by 55.78 kPa with an increasing the frow rate when the flow rate ratio between hot and cold side 1:1. However, the tendency of pressure drop was difference when flow rate ratio wasn't 1:1. In case that the flow rate ratio between hot and cold side was not 1:1, the pressure drop at the low flow rate side was higher than that when the flow rate ratio was 1:1, while pressure drop of the other side was decreased compared to that when the flow rate ratio was 1:1.

  • The increase of system weight due to installation of cooling devices adds electrical and mechanical loads of humanoid robot, and in return, results in much heat. Therefore, the weight of cooling system is a critical issue for robot cooling. In this study, we propose non-metallic cold plates to deal with such problems. We compare thermal performances between one metallic cold plate and five different types of non-metallic cold plates. A metallic cold plate is totally made of copper. Five non-metallic PC(polycarbonate) cold plates, which are designed to reduce the overall weight of robot cooling system, are composed of a polycarbonate cover with different types of base plate. The overall heat transfer coefficients per unit mass and thermal resistances are obtained for the cold plates. The metallic cold plate shows the best thermal performance. It is interesting to note that the PC cold plate with an aluminum base plate with 18 channels shows the best overall heat transfer coefficient per unit mass. Most polycarbonate cold plates display fairly comparable thermal performance with more reduced system weight compared to the metallic cold plate.

  • An analytical model was developed using the lumped mass parameter method to estimate temperature distribution of metal parts and refrigerant of the hermetic reciprocating compressor, All of the lumped mass has been equated with the first law of thermodynamics. In the delivered equation, correlations of heat transfer coefficient in the heat transfer equation were taken from open literature. The equations are solved by Gauss-Jordan method simultaneously. To verify the developed numerical program, an experiment was conducted with a domestic refrigerator. The compressor which had been installed at the bottom of the experimental refrigerator was modified to measure internal temperature. Model verification test was conducted at $30^{\circ}C$ outdoor temperature with variation of compressor cooling conditions. As a result, there is a good consistency between calculated temperature and measured one.

  • The effect of nozzle characterristics on the mist-cooling heat transfer was investigated under the various flow conditions. Two different types of twin fluid nozzle were used, one is a $90^{\circ}$ angle tip nozzle with needle and the other is a $90^{\circ}$ angle tip non-needle nozzle. The cooling rate from the heated surface was measured and obtained the boiling curve as a function of surface temperature. An immersion sampling was employed for the measurement of droplet size of the spray. As a result of this experiment, the liquid sheet type nozzle shows better atomization when the mass ratio Mr>2.0, and collects more liquid droplets on the heated surface that results in better cooling effect. It was found that the maximum heat flux and heat transfer coefficient increased with increase in the volumetric flow rate, whereas the maximum heat flux decreased with increase in spray distance. The cooling effect depends upon the amount of collected droplet and droplet size, but it strongly depends upon the amount of collected droplet.

  • This paper deals with the heat exchange performance prediction of a counter flow type double-tube condenser for natural refrigerant mixtures composed of Propane/n-Butane or Propane/i-Butane in a smooth tube and a micro-fin tube. The local characteristics of heat transfer, mass transfer and pressure drop are calculated using a prediction method developed by the authors. The total pressure drop and the overall heat transfer coefficient are also evaluated on various heat exchange conditions. The calculated results of the natural refrigerant mixtures are compared with HCFC22. In conclusion, natural refrigerant mixtures composed of Propane/n-Butane or Propane/i-Butane are appropriate candidates for alternative refrigerant from the viewpoint of heat transfer characteristics.

  • 340 MWe circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler in Yeosu power station is under construction. The circulating fluidized bed boiler in the Yeosu power plant has a number of differences from other domestic boilers in terms of scale and design. Evaluation of design parameters of the Yeosu CFB boiler should be required because the direct application of existing technology is limited. In this study, design characteristics of the Yeosu CFB boiler was summarized. And thermogravimetric analysis was conducted with comparing other rank coals. Watersteam side heat absorption, flue gas temperature and heat transfer coefficient were calculated by heat and mass balance. Design parameters for the Yeosu CFB boiler were discussed along with typical value in the CFB design range.

  • In this study, we experimentally investigate of a two-phase natural circulation loop that functions as a passive containment cooling system (PCCS). The experimental apparatus comprises two loops: a hot loop, for simulating containment under severe accidents, and a natural circulation loop, for simulating the PCCS. The experiment is conducted by controlling the pressure and inlet temperature of the hot loop in the range of 0.59-0.69 MPa (abs) and 119.6-158.8 ℃, respectively. The heat balance of the hot loop is established and compared with a natural circulation loop to assess the thermal reliability of the experimental apparatus, and an additional system is installed to measure the vapor mass flow rate. Furthermore, the thermal-hydraulic characteristics are considered in terms of a temperature, mass flow rate, heat transfer coefficient (HTC), etc. The flow rate of the natural circulation loop is induced primarily by flashing, and a distortion is observed in the local HTC because of the fully develop as well as subcooled boiling. As a result, we present the amount of heat capacity that the PCCS can passively remove according to the experimental conditions and compared the heat transfer performance using Chen's and Dittus-Boelter correlation.

  • Mass transfer coefficients were measured for water vapor absorption into a LiBr-Water solution of 60wt% flowing down an absorber of vertical tube type. The absorber is copper tube of 25mm inner diameter and 1000mm length. The film Reynolds number were varied in the range of 35~130. The solution is fed from the top of the pipe, and the conditions of solution are supercooled liquid and superheated liquid. As results, the flowrates of LiBr solution which takes peak value of average absorption mass flux exist. Mass transfer coefficients decrease with increasing the flowrate of LiBr solution, and the decrease rate in the case of supercooled liquid is large as compared with that in the case of superheated liquid. But the absorption rate of supercooled liquid is decidedly superior to that of superheated liquid.
