An Objective Estimation for Simulating of Asymmetrical Auditory Filter of the Hearing Impaired According to Hearing Loss Degree (난청인의 난청 정도에 따른 비대칭 청각 필터 구현의 객관적 평가)

  • Hearing impaired person's hearing loss has personally various shape, so existing symmetrical auditory filter of frequency band method wasn't properly simulated the hearing impaired person's various hearing loss shape. The shapes of auditory filter are asymmetrical different with each center frequency and each input level. Hearing impaired person which has hearing loss was differently changed with that of normal hearing people and it has different value for speech of quality through auditory filter. In this study, the asymmetrical auditory filter was simulated and then some tests to estimate the filter's performance objectively were performed. The experiment as simulated auditory filter's performance evaluation method used perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) and log likelihood ratio (LLR) for speech through auditory filter. In the test, processed speech was evaluated objective speech quality and distortion using PESQ and LLR value. When hearing loss processed, PESQ and LLR value have big difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical auditory filter. It means that the difference of the shape auditory filter may affect to speech quality. Especially, when hearing loss existed, auditory filter changing according to asymmetrical shape for each center frequency affected to perceive speech quality of the hearing impaired.

  • For children with hearing impairment, unlike the children without hearing impairment who can reconstruct their languages through the process of hearing and uttering, the inherent mechanism for language acquisition do not operate due to the loss of hearing ability. Therefore, to help hearing-impaired children develop their language ability, web-based language learning system should be constructed depending on the special qualities which the children possess in language learning process. When the system is being designed, it is necessary that words or expressions describing actions or situations be animated and that active situation-based language learning system be constructed to help them develop their power of observation. Moreover, the system needs to be developed through the use of alternative thinking strategy, antonyms, and contrastive words, and emphasis on facial expressions. This paper presents web-based language learning system which is suitable for hearing-impaired children in the way to reduce the grammatical errors they make and to improve their language learning.

  • The cochlear implantation(CI) as an useful tool for aural rehabilitation in bilateral severe to profound hearing impairment. However, CI prefer to usually one ear in spite of bilateral hearing impaired. because of the various characteristics of hearing loss, the hearing conservation for the future possibility, and socioeconomic condition of hearing impaired person and their families. The unilateral CI has limitations such as a directional loss, a difficult speech understanding in noise and a neural plasticity. These limitations will be overcome by hearing aid(HA) which is familiar with hearing impairer. but HA fitting for bimodal-binaural hearing are difficult because the difference output characteristic of HA and CI. This study will be confirm realities of use of HA in unilateral cochlear implantee. For this goal, 25(m:f=10:15) child participated who are used to HA for 1 to 17 months. We had telephone interviews with their mother about use of HA, change of auditory performance and own voice. As the results, hearing threshold levels of unimplanted ear, the use of a appropriate HA, implanted and aided hearing threshold level(HTL) are must be considered for successful biomodal-binaural hearing. Especially, implanted and aided HTL should be very useful parameter for a prediction of HA effect and a criterion of selection for bilateral cochlear implantation.

A Study on Development of a Hearing Impairment Simulator considering Frequency Selectivity and Asymmetrical Auditory Filter of the Hearing Impaired (난청인의 주파수 선택도와 비대칭적 청각 필터를 고려한 난청 시뮬레이터 개발에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose a hearing impairment simulator considering reduced frequency selectivity and asymmetrical auditory filter of the hearing impaired, and we verified the reduced frequency selectivity and asymmetrical auditory filter affected in speech perception through experiments. The reduced frequency selectivity has made embodied by spectral smearing using LPC(linear prediction coding). The shapes of auditory filter are asymmetrical different with each center frequency. Hearing impaired person which has hearing loss was differently changed with that of normal hearing people and it has different value for speech of quality through auditory filter. The experiments confirmed subjective test and objective test. The subjective experiments are composed of 4 kinds of tests: pure tone test, SRT(speech reception threshold) test, and WRS(word recognition score) test without spectral smearing, and WRS test with spectral smearing. The experiment of the hearing impairment simulator was performed from 9 subjects who have normal ears. The amount of spectral smearing was controlled by LPC order. The asymmetrical auditory filter of proposed hearing impairment simulator was simulated and then some tests to estimate the filter's performance objectively were performed. A Comparison Between the Korean Digits-in-Noise Test and the Korean Speech Perception-in-Noise Test in Normal-Hearing and Hearing-Impaired Listeners

  • Background and Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to validate the performance and diagnostic efficacy of the Korean digits-in-noise (K-DIN) test in comparison to the Korean speech perception-in-noise (K-SPIN) test, which is the representative speech-in-noise test in clinical practice. Subjects and Methods: Twenty-seven subjects (15 normal-hearing and 12 hearing-impaired listeners) participated. The recorded Korean 0-9 digits were used to form quasirandom digit triplets; 50 target digit triplets were presented at the most comfortable level of each subject while presenting speech-shaped background noise at various levels of signal-to-noise ratios (-12.5, -10, -5, or +5 dB). Subjects were then instructed to listen to both target and noise masker unilaterally and bilaterally through a headphone. K-SPIN test was also conducted using the same procedure as the K-DIN. After calculating their percent correct responses, K-DIN and K-SPIN results were compared using a Pearson-correlation test. Results: Results showed a statistically significant correlation between K-DIN and K-SPIN in all hearing conditions (left: r=0.814, p<0.001; right: r=0.788, p<0.001; bilateral: r=0.727, p<0.001). Moreover, the K-DIN test achieved better testing efficacy, shorter average listening time (5 min vs. 30 min), and easier performance of task according to participants' qualitative reports than the K-SPIN test. Conclusions: In this study, the Korean version of digit triplet test was validated in both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners. The findings suggest that the K-DIN test can be used as a simple and time-efficient hearing-in-noise test in audiology clinics in Korea.

A Design and Implementation of Speech Recognition and Synthetic Application for Hearing-Impairment

  • In this paper, we design and implement an Android mobile application that helps hearing impaired people communicate based on STT(Speech-to-Text) and TTS(Text-to-Speech) APIs and accelerometer sensor of a smartphone. This application provides the ability to record what the hearing-Impairment person's interlocutor is saying with a microphone, convert it to text using the STT API, and display it to the hearing-Impairment person. In addition. In addition, when a hearing-impaired person inputs a text using the TTS API, it is converted into voice and told to the interlocutor. When a hearing-impaired person shakes their smartphone, an accelerometer based background service function is provided to run the application. The application implemented in this paper provides a function that allows hearing impaired people to communicate easily with other people when communicating with others without using sign language as a video call.

  • Hearing - impaired children who have difficulty hearing and hearing go through pronunciation training. The purpose of this study is to provide the pronunciation training system based on digital contents that can be used for repeated hearing training while maintaining interest in hearing - impaired children. For this purpose, we conducted an interview survey for users and experts. Based on the results, we developed a digital content based pronunciation training system. Finally, to verify the effect of the digital service implemented, the user test was conducted for the hearing - impaired children. As a result of the interview, repeated training and interest factors were found to be essential factors affecting pronunciation training. In implementing digital services, we have used fairy tales and a variety of interactive elements to derive children's interests and designed a user flow that can train multiple words and sentences for effective repetition training. As a result of the test, this digital content was evaluated positively.

A preliminary study on standardization of phoneme perception test for school-aged children : Focused on hearing impaired children (학령기용 음소지각검사 표준화를 위한 기초연구: 청각장애아동을 대상으로)

  • This study attempted to analyze the consonant perception ability and errors and to verify compatibility items for hearing impaired children wearing hearing aids and cochlear implants using the Phoneme Perception Test for School-Aged children (PPT-S). As a result of the study, it was found that children with hearing impairments have more difficulty in perceiving final consonants than initial consonants. The hard type of PPT-S, in which the articulation method and articulation place of the target and foil words are similar, felt more difficult than the easy type. Among the initial consonants, the incorrect response rate for aspiration sound was higher. In the case of final consonants, the incorrect answer rate for 'ㄷ' and 'ㅁ' was relatively higher. There was no significant difference in the percentage of correct response rate according to the gender of the speaker. The above results can be usefully used as basic data for standardizing of PPT-S and evaluating the intervention effects before and after hearing rehabilitation with hearing impaired children.

Acoustic Masking Effect That Can Be Occurred by Speech Contrast Enhancement in Hearing Aids (보청기에서 음성 대비 강조에 의해 발생할 수 있는 마스킹 현상)

  • In most of hearing aids, amplification algorithms are used to compensate hearing loss, noise and feedback reduction algorithms are used and to increase the perception of speeches contrast enhancement algorithms are used. However, acoustic masking effect is occurred between formants if contrast is enhanced excessively. To confirm the masking effect in speeches, the experiment are composed of 6 tests; test pure tone test, speech reception test, word recognition test, pure tone masking test, formant pure tone masking test and speech masking test, and for objective evaluation, LLR is introduced. As a result of normal hearing subjects and hearing impaired subjects, more making is occurred in hearing impaired subjects than normal hearing subjects when using pure tone, and in the speech masking test, speech reception is also lower in hearing impaired subjects than in normal hearing subjects. This means that acoustic masking effect rather than distortion influences speech perception. So it is required to check the characteristics of masking effect before wearing a hearing aid and to apply this characteristics to fitting curve.
