To investigate the effects of lactic acid bacteria administration on fecal microflora and putrefactive metabolites in human being, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum powder (1.5 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ cells, respectively) was administrated to six healthy volunteers (average 28 years old) twice a day for 2 weeks. During the administration of lactic acid bacteria, the numbers of bifidobacteria, lactobacilli, and enterococci in feces were increased significantly, whereas those of Staphylococcus and lecithinase-negative Clostridium were decreased considerably. In addition, a number of anaerobic Bacteroides were increased. However, the contents of fecal ammonia and putrefactive metabolites (indole, skatole, p-cresole) were not changed during the administration.

The absence of the nipple-areolar complex(NAC) in men are seldom stated, as a result of trauma, burn, mastectomy, or after the correction of extreme bilateral gynecomastia. A total of 50 healthy men aged 21 to 27 years were examined. We recorded the configuration (dimensions and shape) and the location of the NAC with respect to fixed skeletal anatomic landmarks. Of the 50 subjects examined, 44 had oval and 6 had a round NAC. The mean diameter for a round NAC was 24.3 mm. The center of the NAC was in the fourth intercostal space in 41 volunteers and in the fifth intercostal space in 9 of the subjects. To localize the NAC on the chest wall, at least three reproducible measurements proved to be necessary, composed of a horizontal line(distance from the midsternal line to the nipple, A), a medial oblique line(distance from the sternal notch to the nipple, B) and a lateral oblique line(distance from the acromioclavicular joint to the nipple, C). Using these three parameters, we recommend that the appropriate location can be calculated derived from the circumference of the chest.

Five acid hydrazides as precolumn fluorescence derivatization reagents for carboxylic acids in HPLC, which have the benzofuran or benzothiazole moiety conjugated to a furan, thiophene or oxazoline ring, were synthesized and examined in view of reactivity, separability and sensitivity. Of these hydrazides, 2-(5-hydrazinocarbonyl-2-oxazolyl)-5,6-dimethoxybenzothiazole (BTOH) was most favorable. The detection limit of lauric acid as a model acid was 0.1 pmol per $10-{\mu}l$ injection volume at S/N=3, which was roughly equal to that of an analogous compound, 2-(5-hydrazinocarbonyl-2-furyl)-5,6-dimethoxybenzothiazole. The reagent allowed rapid assays of carboxylic acids ($C_{12:0}-C_{20:4}$) within 20 min with satisfactory scparability. The method was applied to the determination of fatty acids in human sera from healthy volunteers as well as from patients with diabetes or thyroid dysfunction.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the relative bioavailability of doxycycline hyclate and doxycycline-L-methylenelysine, a new synthetic derivative of doxycycline. Single doses, equivalent to 100mg of doxycycline hyclate, were administered orally to 10 healthy male volunteers. Serum concentrations were determined periodically over 12 hrs. by microbiological assay. Peak serum concentrations were reached within 4 hrs. Doxycycline hyclate $(1.38mcg.ml^{-1})$ gave 1.66 tines higher concentration than doxycycline-L-methylenelysine $(0.38mcg.\;ml^{-1})$. And the areas under the serum concentrationtime curves 0 to 12 hrs were $8.38mcg.hr.ml^{-1}$ (doxycycline hyclate) and $5.56mg\;hr.ml^{-1}$(doxycycline).

In this study, the two sampling methods for blood glucose measurement were evaluated in order to reduce pre-analytical error. For this purpose, glucose levels of Li-heparinized plasma (LHP) and Na-fluorinated plasma (NFP) in blood collected from healthy volunteers were determined by using routine hexokinase procedures. The percentage range of pre-analytical error was quantitated by comparing LHP glucose values with NFP glucose values according to delaying analytical time (0, 60, and 120 min). LHP glucose values were decreased by 6.6% in 60 min., 17.7% in 120 min, whereas NFP glucose values decreased by 1.1% in 60 min, 2.0% in 120 min. Therefore it may be recommended that the NFP sampling method should be used for routine blood glucose determination in diabetes mellitus diagnosis.

Inner nutshell of Castanea crenata has been used as an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle agent from the ancient time in east Asia. In order to develop new anti-aging and anti-wrinkle, ethanolic extract of inner nutshell of Castanea crenata was prepared and various biological activities were evaluated. Cor-285 possessed potent tree radical scavenging activity in vitro compared to gallic acid. Cor-285 showed the preventive effect against UV-induced cytotoxicity of fibroblast at concentration of 25-250mg/ml. When Cor-285 was evaluated for its anti-allergic activity, it effectively inhibited histamine release from mast cells induced by compound 48/80. The inhibitory activity was stronger than that of glycyrrhizinate. Cor-285 also showed on vivo inhibition against delayed hypersensitivity as well as croton-oil induced ear edema in mice when topically applied. These results strongly suggest that Cor-285 may reduce immunoregulatory/inflammatory skin trouble. From the attempts to isolate the scavenger, were isolated. In a clinical trial of twenty healthy volunteers with aged skin, 6 weeks application of Cor-285 decreased wrinkle about 26% and increased moisturizing 20% on the skin. All of these results indicate that Cor-285 may be an effective anti-aging and anti-wrinkle agent.

The interactions between monocytes and extracellular matrix proteins have been implicated in atherosclerosis pathophysiology. In the present study we evaluated monocyte attachment and migration through oxidized and non-oxidized collagen IV. Monocyte attachment was tested on microwells coated with either native or oxidized collagen IV. Monocyte migration through collagen IV was examined on transwells. Monocytes derived from patients with diabetes mellitus showed an increased ability to attach and migrate through collagen IV as compared to those derived from healthy volunteers. Moreover, control monocytes attached to oxidized collagen at a higher degree, while they migrated through oxidized collagen at a lower degree, as compared to the native protein. Our results also showed the involvement of the alpha2 integrin subunit in the above phenomena suggesting a modified interaction between monocytes and collagen IV in diabetes mellitus.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of supplementary highly purified chitosan (HPC) on blood alcohol concentration in healthy human. The human study was performed with two sections. Each section of the study was conducted by two-phase cross-over design with a week wash-out period. All volunteers took HPC in one phase, and took a placebo in the next phase. Blood alcohol concentrations were different between in those taking HPC and in those taking the placebo in the human. And the concentration of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST, GOT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT, GPT), the indicator of liver cell damage, was lowered in those taking HPC, compared to those taking the placebo. In conclusion, taking HPC prior to drinking alcohol can somewhat reduce alcohol concentration in human blood and liver cell damage.

Dexterity is defined in the present study as interdigital manipulative skill or the fine manipulative movements of objects held between the thumb and fingers. The Grooved pegboard test has been used to evaluate dexterity requring visual-motor coordination. The purpose of this study was to standardize the completion time of the Grooved pegboard test in different age groups and gender. Normative values for the Grooved Pegboard Test was developed on the sample of 282 healthy volunteers (89 men and 183 women). Subjects were stratified according to gender and dominant hand and were subdivided into six groups by blocking. The results of this study were as follows: 1) There was a significant difference in completion time between dominant and nondominant hand in both men and women groups (p<.05). 2) There were significant differences in completion time between men and women group (p<.05) 3) There were significant differences in completion time among age groups (p<.05).

AS human movements have the inherent property of anticipating target and can be coordinated to realize a given schedule, finger movements have stereotyped patterns during hand grasping. Finger movements have been studied in the past to find out the coordination pattern of hand joint angular movement. These studies analyzed only a few finger joints for a limited number of hand postures. This study investigated fourteen joint angles during eight hand-grasping motions to analyze the angular correlations between finger joints and to suggest motion factors which represent hand grasping. Hand grasping motions including forward arm motion were examined in ten healthy volunteers. Eight objects were used to represent real hand grasping tasks. $CyberGlove^{TM}$ and $Fasreack^{TM}$ measured hand joint angles and wrist origin. Joint angle correlations between PIJ(proximal interphalangeal joint) and MPJ(metacarpophalangeal joint) at one finger, between neighboring PIJs and MPJs were four factors related to the fast phase of hand grasping motions and eight factors related to the slow phase of hand grasping motions.
