The Factors Influencing Nursing Profession Perception of Nursing Student (간호대학생의 간호직 인식 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the nursing profession perception of nursing students. Methods: Data were collected with a questionnaire distributed to 305 nursing students in U city. Data were collected from March 30 to June 15, 2019. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 22.0 program. Results: There were significant differences in the level of interpersonal trust (F=5.42, p<.001), empathy ability (F=3.13, p=.015), interpersonal relationship ability (F=3.64, p=.006) and nursing profession perception (F=11.95, p<.001) on the major satisfaction. The level of interpersonal trust (r=.21, p<.001), empathy ability (r=.27, p<.001) and interpersonal relationship ability (r=.28, p<.001) were positively correlated with nursing profession perception. Also empathy ability (r=.11, p=.047), interpersonal relationship ability (r=.49, p<.001) with interpersonal trust and correlation of empathy ability with interpersonal relationship ability (r=.32, p<.001) were positively correlated with each other. The significant variables that influence the nursing profession perception were grade, major satisfaction, empathy ability and interpersonal relationship ability. These factors were responsible for 21.3%. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that educational programs are necessary to raise the nursing perception of nursing students and reduce the turnover of nurses.

Perception of Nutrition Labeling on Restaurant Menus among Adults in Suwon (수원시 거주 성인의 외식 메뉴 영양표시에 대한 인식)

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the perception of nutrition labeling on restaurant menus, and to analyze the differences among subject's characteristics, eating-out behaviors, and dietary attitudes. Information concerning general characteristics, health status, eating-out behaviors and dietary attitudes of subjects was collected by a structured questionnaire. From January 5th to February 27th in 2009, 406 questionnaires were completed by 157 males and 249 females. Statistical analyses were performed using by SPSS 14.0 package program. The perception of the importance of nutrition labeling was 3.89, while knowledge of whether restaurants provided sufficient nutrition information scored 2.26 indicating that being highly conscious of nutrition labeling, respondents did not view the supplied information as sufficient. Nutritional perception was greater in females and varied in both genders with age and health status. Significant differences concerning the perceptions of nutrition labeling were evident, based on eating-out behaviors and dietary attitudes. The results imply that nutrition labeling on restaurant menus should be based on consumer characteristics. Relevant nutrition labeling might help improve health by encouraging proper dietary habits and providing valuable nutritional information. Recognition of the importance of nutrition labeling and strategic implementation of labeling in menus would be prudent strategies for restaurant managers. Impact of Perceived Cancer Risk on the Cancer Screening Rate in the General Korean Population: Results from the Korean Health Panel Survey Data

  • Objective: To investigate the relationship between the perception of cancer risk and likelihood of having undergone cancer screening. Materials and Methods: We used data from the Korean Health Panel Survey from December 2011 onward. Of 3,390 patients who visited a hospital during the previous year, we included data from 2,466 individuals; 924 samples were excluded due to missing data. Logistic regression analysis and the chi square test were used to investigate the association between perceived cancer risk and the likelihood of having undergone cancer screening. Results: For patients who perceived their risk of developing cancer during the next 10 years to be 30-40%, the odds ratio was increased 1.65 fold (95%CI: 1.223, 2.234) compared with those who perceived their risk to be almost zero. Although the difference was not statistically significant, perceiving cancer risk as either extremely low or extremely high appears to be associated with a reduced likelihood of having undergone cancer screening, resulting in an inverted U-shaped relationship. Conclusions: Physicians and researchers should be aware of the importance of the affective component of risk perception. Policies addressing the influence of cancer risk perception should be implemented in South Korea and worldwide.

Perceptions of the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Middle-aged Male Taxi Drivers: Focus Group Interviews (중년남성 택시운전자의 심혈관질환 위험성에 대한 인식: 포커스그룹 인터뷰를 중심으로)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to comprehensively examine middle-aged male taxi drivers' perceptions of the risk of cardiovascular disease. Methods: A qualitative method was used, with focus group interviews. The participants were middle-aged male taxi drivers who had been driving for more than ten years and for more than six hours daily. Results: The data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. Middle-aged male taxi drivers' perceptions of the risk of cardiovascular disease were categorized into three main themes: "individual perceptions of cardiovascular disease", "possibility of behaviors for cardiovascular disease" and "motivations of behaviors for cardiovascular disease". Six sub-themes were extracted as follows: "perception of vulnerability", "perception of seriousness", "perception of profitability", "perception of disability", "self-awareness" and "advancing toward health care". Conclusion: It is necessary to invigorate support systems through measures including education, counseling, and web-based programs to prevent cardiovascular disease in middle-aged male taxi drivers.

A comparison of the perceived importance and performance of midwives' roles between midwives and nurses in Korea: a cross-sectional study

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the perceptions, importance, and performance of midwives' roles among midwives and nurses in Korea. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was employed. Data were collected from 164 nurses and 79 midwives from April 1 to June 25, 2021. Midwives enrolled in the Korean Midwifery Association and nurses and midwives from two hospitals each Daegu and Gyeonggi Province in Korea were invited to participate. The independent t-test, chi-square test, the Welch-Aspin test, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for analysis. Results: The midwives' role perception score (3.47±1.46) was lower than that of nurses (3.95±0.85), and the midwives' role performance score (2.98±0.83) was also lower than that of nurses (3.34±0.89). Significant differences were observed between midwives and nurses in their perception and performance of roles related to prenatal management, childbirth management, management of psychological changes, postpartum management, and newborn care. Higher role perception and performance among midwives were linked to the management of psychological changes and women's health, indicating potential areas for future development. Conclusion: The study results suggest directions for developing new roles for midwives. It is necessary to find a way to expand the field of midwives in public health by benchmarking the roles of midwives in various countries.

Perception of Body Image, Eating Disorder, Eating Behaviors and Subjective Health Status of Female High School and College Students in Daegu Area (대구 및 대구근교지역 여대생과 여고생들의 체형인식, 섭식행동 및 건강상태 비교)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship among body image Perception, eating behavior and health status in young females. The survey was carried out by self-questionnaires for 293 female high school students(HS) and 164 female college students(CS) living in Daegu and suburbs of Daegu. For the perception of body image, 9-grade body figure drawings were used based on average Korean body size. EAT-26 and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were used to measure the tendency of eating disorder and self-esteem. It appeared that 40.5% of the subjects were off the normal range of body weight; especially 34.2% of the subject were underweight. The subjects' perception about current body image was within normal range. Almost of all the subjects believed that the ideal body image was thinner than their own current body image, and they wanted to be thinner than their current body image. The change of eating behaviors related to weight control of CS was significantly higher than that of HS students. EAT-26 score, self-esteem score, and subjective health status score were no difference between groups. The cut-off point of the eating disorder in this study was equal to or greater than 20 in EAT-26 score. The rates of the eating disorder were very high as 9.6% of HS and 8.5% of CS. Eating disorder was positively correlated with BMI, current body image, dissatisfaction of body image and the change score of eating behavior. But eating disorder was negatively correlated with health status. From the results of this study, we suggested that one of causes related to the eating disorder behaviors in adolescent females was resulted from misperception about ideal body image. There is a great need to provide nutrition educations concerning appropriate perception of body image and weight control among adolescent females.

How Does Body-Shape Perception Affect the Weight Control Practices?: 2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (주관적 체형인식이 체중조절방법 선택에 미치는 영향: 2012년 국민건강영양조사 자료를 이용하여)

  • Objectives: This study was to investigate how body-shape perception could influence to weight control practice both in normal and obese group. Methods: We used 2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to analysis 1) weight control practices of population; 2) consistency between body-shape perception and body mass index; 3) comparison weight control practices between normal group and body mass index (BMI) obese group in perceptional obese group; 4) odds ratio of BMI obese group using herbal drugs for weight control practice in perceptional obese group. Results: We found that study population tends to choose exercise, dietary restriction, meal skip, health functional food, one-food, drug, herbal drug, fasting and self-medication in order of frequency to control weight. The agreement between body-shape perception and BMI within obese group was approximately 64% with 0.40 of Cohen's Kappa coefficient, ranging from 0.384 to 0.423. Within perceptional obese group, choosing each weight control practice methods ratios between normal BMI group and obese BMI group were not significantly different. Within perceptional obese group, obese BMI group showed significant odds ratio (2.58, 95% confidence intervals, 1.38~4.85) than normal BMI group in choosing herbal medication for weight loss when adjusting other variables. Conclusions: We concluded that body-shape perception might be an important factor for choosing weight control program, and roles of Korean medical doctors thought to be enhanced for using herbal medication for weight loss.

Safety Knowledge and Changing Behavior in Agricultural Workers: an Assessment Model Applied in Central Italy

  • Background: In recent years, the interest in health and safety in the workplace has increased. Agriculture is one of the human work activities with the highest risk indexes. Studies on risk perception of agricultural workers are often referred to as specific risk factors (especially pesticides), but the risk perception plays an important role in preventing every kind of accident and occupational disease. Methods: The aim of this research is to test a new method for understanding the relation between risk perception among farmers and the main risk factors to which they are exposed. A secondary aim is to investigate the influence of training in risk perception in agriculture. The data collection was realized using a questionnaire designed to investigate the risk perception; the questionnaire was given to a sample of 119 agricultural workers in central Italy. Through the use of the "principal components analysis" it was possible to highlight and verify the latent dimensions underlying the collected data in comparison with scales of attitudes. Results: Results show that the highest percentage of strong negative attitude is among the people who have worked for more years, while farmers who have worked for fewer years have a marked positive attitude. Conclusion: The analysis of the questionnaires through the synthetic index method (Rizzi index) showed that agricultural workers involved, in particular the elderly workers, have a negative attitude towards safety; workers are hostile to safety measures if they have not attended special training courses.

Health Behavior for Cancer prevention and Influencing Factors in University Students (대학생의 암 예방 건강행위와 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The study was done to identify health behavior for cancer prevention in university students according to characteristics of the university students and other factors affecting health behavior for cancer prevention and to provide data to set up a strategy to reduce the cancer. Methods: Data were collected by questionnaires from 353 university students in G city. To analyze the sample survey data, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and multiple regression analysis were performed with SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: Significant factors that affect health behaviors for cancer prevention in university students were perception of health status, knowledge and attitudes about cancer, and smoking. These variables explained 21% of health behaviors for cancer prevention. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that in order to improve the health behavior for cancer prevention in university students it is important to development health education programs that focus on positive perception of health status. This development could be enhanced with structured and on-going education about cancer.

Health Care Providers' Perceptions of Physical Function in Older Adults with Arthroplasty from Hip Fracture (고관절 골절로 인공고관절 수술을 받은 노인의 신체적 기능에 대한 의료인의 인식 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was a qualitative research using focus group interviews to collect data on the health care providers' perceptions of physical function in older adults with arthroplasty from hip fracture. Methods: A total of 12 subjects participated in this study. In order to conduct focus group interviews, structured manuscript, field notes, visual recording, and debriefing notes were referred and thematic analysis was used in analysis phase. Results: The six themes were raised: 'burdensome client', 'health care providers' perception of functional decline in older adults after surgery', 'health care providers' perception of caregiver', 'medical environment perceived as affecting physical function', 'crucial components perceived as encouraging functional restoration', and 'difficulty of pain management' with 18 subthemes. Conclusion: Healthcare providers perceived functional decline of elderly after arthroplasty and identified points facilitating or disturbing physical function Moreover, various perspectives on pain management related to physical function were represented.
