The health education for elementary school students is a very important factor in the development of adult health practices. Particularly, eyesight is difficult to recover if lost. Therefore, prevention is better than cure. This study was conducted to investigate the factors that affect the visual health behavior of elementary school students and to furnish basic materials and directions for the promotion of elementary school health. The investigation was carried out for 4 days from 9. 18. 2000 to 9. 21. 2000 for 199 children in 3 elementary schools. A questionnaire was composed of 3 questions about general property. 20 questions about visual health behavior. 7 questions about visual self-efficacy. 5 questions about visual motivation. 16 questions about self-conception. 20 questions about the health locus of control. The data was analysed by an SAS program for t-test. ANOVA. correlation, and multiple regression tests. The results are as follows. 1. The visual health behavior of elementary school children was good (average 52.53). 2. For visual health behavior, school, year, and sex were influential factors. economic levels were not. 3. Visual health behavior had a significant correlation with visual self-efficacy, visual health motives and self-conception. but not with the locus of control. 4. In the multiple regression test, visual self-efficacy and self-conception were significant prediction factors -- the suitability of the regression model was 30.8%. Suggestions from the results are as follows: First, school year and sex had a significant influence on visual health behavior: therefore, it is necessary to consider these two factors when education programs are developed. Second, this study was carried out for students in a partial area only. Therefore, repeated studies for a large sample are necessary for the future.
The purpose of this study is to collect fundamental data for weight control education based on obesity, weight control practices and body image in female college students. Those surveyed were 364 female college students attending universities in Seoul, Kyoung-Gi and Chung Cheung Buk Do. The data were collected from June 1, 1999 to September 10, 1999. The resulting data are as follows: 1. The mean BMI of the female college students was 19.78:t1.87kg/$\textrm{m}^2$, which comes within the range of normal weight. Underweight, normal weight and overweight students were respectively 27.2%, 66.8% and 5.5%. As many as 7.1% of the underweight students and 42.8% of the normal weight students described themselves as being "fatty". 2. Of these subjects, 83.5% reported wanting to lose weight, and the primary reason of weight control was to improve their appearance. The mean weight that they wanted to lose was 5.2$\pm$2.7kg, and 68.7% of the respondents had tried to lose weight. Among them, the most frequently reported weight control behavior was dieting followed by exercise, 30% reported fasting, 3.6% reported using drugs, 4.4% reported smoking and 3.6% reported vomiting. As to the weight loss effect, 96.7% of the subjects used behavior modification, 82.5% of the students exercised, and 76.1% of the dieters reported they had lost weight. 3. As to body image, many female college students were dissatisfied with their body figures, especially thighs(70.3%), hips(60.4%), abdomens(60.2%), and weight(55.2%). The body image of the students that perceived themselves as "fatty" was the lowest. 4. There were significant differences in the mean weight that they wanted to lose and the weight control attempts according to weight perception. Those that perceived themselves as "fatty" wanted to lose more weight, and had more weight control experiences. In conclusion, attempts at weight control are common in the female college students and many students appear to be dissatisfied with their body shapes. It is important to educate about healthy weight control methods and raise their awareness of the positive body image.ss of the positive body image.
Epidemiology and preventive medicine are changing together with Population and health and with ever expanding medical and non medical technologies. New technologies make epidemiology methodologically more sophisticated, but such advances risk overshadowing epidemiology's most important role: raising questions, providing answers, and helping the medical decision-making at ail levels of prevention. Epidemiology also plays a major role in the evaluation of new and other technologies whose effectiveness is poorly known. Epidemiological approaches, methods, techniques, and interpretations are widely used in new and rapidly expanding fields of medicine: research evaluation and synthesis (meta-analysis), establishment of guidelines for clinical preventive practices, new medical technology assessment, guidelines for national and international health policies, evidence-based medicine, outcomes research and disease management ('population-based' medicine and quality of care improvement). In the nearest future, infectious and noninfectious diseases may cease to be almost the sole subjects of epidemiology and they may share their place with other mass phenomena of the next millennium, such as medical practices and care, or political, social and economic actions and their consequences. Not only will primary, secondary, and tertiary Prevention will remain in the epidemiological mainstream, but health protection and health promotion will require perhaps a redefinition of epidemiology in these domains. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Commensality, eating together with others, is a major representation of human sociality. In recent time, environments around commensality have changed significantly due to rapid social changes, and the decline of commensality is perceived as a serious concern in many modern societies. This study employs a cross-cultural analysis of university students in two East Asian countries, and examines cross-cultural variations of perceptions and actual practices of commensality and solo-eating. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The analysis was drawn from a free-list survey and a self-administrative questionnaires of university students in urban Korea and Japan. The free-listing survey was conducted with a small cohort to explore common images and meanings of commensality and solo-eating. The self-administrative questionnaire was developed based on the result of the free-list survey, and conducted with a larger cohort to examine reasons and problems of practices and associated behaviors and food intake. RESULTS: We found that Korean subjects tended to show stronger associations between solo-eating and negative emotions while the Japanese subjects expressed mixed emotions towards the practice of solo-eating. In the questionnaire, more Korean students reported they prefer commensality and tend to eat more quantities when they eat commensally. In contrast, more Japanese reported that they do not have preference on commensality and there is no notable difference in food quantities when they eat commensally and alone. Compared to the general Korean cohort finding, more proportion of overweight and obese groups of Korean subjects reported that they tend to eat more when they are alone than normal and underweight groups. This difference was not found in the overweight Japanese subjects. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed cross-cultural variations of perceptions and practices of commensality and solo-eating in a non-western setting.
Purpose: Adolescence is a critical period for growth and development; hence, knowledge about good food habits is essential amongst children. This study was conducted to investigate prevalence of awareness among food sellers, which could probably influence children's health and perceptions on food around schools towards adulterated food management beliefs, competencies, and food safety practices. Methods: Data was collected from 195 dealers around 25 elementary, middle and high schools in Daegu and Gyeongbuk provinces using a self-administered questionnaire in July and August, 2015. The data was analyzed using frequency analysis, one-way analysis of variance, $x^2$-test, factor analysis, and reliability analysis by SPSS Statistics (ver. 23.0). Results: A total of 121 people (62.1%) reported satisfaction of providing information and education on adulterated food. The perception of hazardous substances was found to be related to food poisoning bacteria and viruses (65.6%), heavy metals (42.1%), environmental hormones (36.4%), residual pesticides (27.2%), and irradiated food (26.7%). The perceived score on hygiene practices for processed food seller was $4.04{\pm}0.56/5.00$ and for cooked food seller was $4.09{\pm}0.45$. The capacity of adulterated food management practice of food sellers was significantly correlated with food knowledge on adulteration and public relation capacity, necessity of adulterated food management, and perception of hygiene practices (p<0.01). Similarly, knowledge and public relation capacity were significantly different according to ages (p<0.01). The perception of the necessity of adulterated food management was significantly different according to education levels (p<0.05), and the evaluation of hygiene practices was significantly different according to age (p<0.01). Conclusion: In order to solve the problem of adulterated food, which is one of the four social evils, and to strengthen the capacity of children to solve social problems, various practices like campaign on health promotion, goof food habits, education, and adulterated food management, should be actively promoted not only for children but also for food sellers around the schools.
목적: 한국의 건강증진학교의 추진 경과와 앞으로의 과제를 소개하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 방법: 2009년부터 2018년 현재까지 진행되어온 교육부 주도 한국형 건강증진학교에 대한 관련 문헌들을 고찰한다. 결과: 지난 10년간의 한국형 건강증진학교는 매년 최소 14개교부터 최대 98개교까지 다양한 개수로 운영되어 왔다. 효과평가 결과 학생들의 건강행태 뿐 아니라 학교생활 전반에 걸쳐 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 교육부, 지역교육청, 한국교육개발원 그리고 건강증진학교라는 4개 기관의 유기적 협조 하에 컨설팅, 교사대상 교육기회 제공, 우수사례 보급, 일반화를 위한 홍보 지원 체계가 잘 갖추어지게 되었다. 결론: 한국형 건강증진학교에 대한 추진 및 지원 체계는 이미 잘 갖추어진 상태이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 건강증진학교의 보편화에는 한계가 있으므로 이를 극복하기 위해 인증제 도입 등 다양한 시도가 앞으로도 계속되어야 할 것이다.
The study is designed to grasp school adminstrators' attitudes toward school health education and practices of school health education and to analyse relationships between characteristics of school administators and their attitudes to school health education and between their attitudes and practices of school health education in elementary and secondary schools, so that it may offer the basic materials for improving the school health education. This study was obtained from 740 school administrators all over the country, who have attended Certification Training of Elementary and Secondary Principal opened at Korea National University of Education from July, 1, 1991 to August 9, 1991. The results are summarized as follows: 1. School administrators' attitudes toward school health education 1) As for view of health education, those who believed that health is the means of education was 36.2%. 2) In methods of school health, those who want regular health education was 75% ; irregular health education 25%. 3) As for attitudes of those chose irregular health education as teaching methods : (1) In teaching hours, the morning and afternoon class meetings was highest 50.8% of whole. (2) In teaching staffs, home room teacher was 51.9% ; school nurse 34.8%. (3) In frequency of irregular health education, 1-2 times a week was 38%, 1-2 times a month 32.6%, 1-2 times a semester 11.8%. (4) As for teaching methods of irregular health education, practice through the health function showed higher frequency than other methods 4) As for attitudes of those chose regular health education as teaching methods : (1) Most of respondents had opinion that regular health education should be carried out by the subject of physical education in both elemetary and secondary schools. (2) Opinion that school nurse should be in charge of regular health education was a little higher than other ones. (3) More than a half of the whole thought that 1-2 hours a month was suitable for carrying out regular health education. (4) Therr-fourth of those who wanted regular health education chose the using of audiovisual material as a teching method. (5) Curriculum recommended first by respondents for the school health education were personal habits and health, prevention and control of disease, mental and emotional health etc. (6) As for impedimental factors in the development of school health education, it was shown as following order : the lack of professional health education instructors, the lack of budget and administrative support, the lack of instructional materials and instruments etc.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to survey the health behaviors related to reproductive health, reproductive health history, and sexual behaviors of college students in local areas. Method: With a survey design, 792 college students from C and D areas were recruited to assess health behaviors such as smoking and alcohol drinking, as well as history of reproductive health and sexual behaviors. The data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire from November to December, 2007. Result: Mean age of the students was 20.8(SD=1.96) and gender distribution was 29.2% for male and 70.8% for female. Unhealthy behaviors were alcohol drinking, smoking, excessive weight loss, and irregular exercise; unsafe sex practices were experience of sexual intercourse with multiple sex partners and history of sexually transmitted disease (STD). Male students had more alcohol drinking (p=.04), smoking(p<.001), excessive weight loss(p=.01), experience of sexual intercourse with multiple sex partners(p<.001), history of STD(p=.025) compared to females. On the other hands, female students participated in regular exercise less than males(p<.001). Conclusion: College students seem to perform unhealthy behaviors related to reproductive health and less effective way of safe sex practices. Therefore, a planned education program for reproductive health promotion operated by college level is needed to assess and improve the level of reproductive health in college students.
The prevention of life-style related diseases is an increasingly important issue in Japan, because not only have the number of patients with life-style related diseases increased but also medical care costs. This paper gives recent strategies for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases through life-style modification. Health objectives for the year 2010, called "Healthy Japan 21", were established in 2000 by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Health Promotion Act was enacted in 2002 to promote this health policy. However, the prevention efforts for life-style related diseases have not been effective in regard to the evaluation of the strategy objectives. The reform of the medical care system which included a new nationwide prevention strategy for life-style related diseases was presented in 2006. The new strategy starting from April 2008 included a "specific health checkup" and "specific health education" for those with metabolic syndrome. The specific health checkup is used to screen people according to criteria of the metabolic syndrome and divide them into 3 groups. These groups will receive specific health education. The purpose of this strategy is the early detection of those who have cardiovascular risk factors, and the early management of the clustering of cardiovascular risk factors of obese people aged 40-74 years old. It is mandatory for every insurer to conduct a specific health checkup and specific health education under the new Act. The implementation rate of the specific health checkup and the specific health education, and a reduction rate of individuals with metabolic syndrome among insured people will be evaluated every year. The national objective is to increase the rate of those undergoing the specific health checkup to 80% and the rate of those receiving the specific health education to 60% by the year 2015. The national objective also targeted a reduction rate of 25% for those with metabolic syndrome. This new strategy will be the biggest intervention trial in the world, and it will produce a big health care market in Japan. Not only public administrative institutions but also private institutions are now preparing to take part in this new strategy. However, various tasks remain, such as training more professionals in health education, developing more evidence based practices, and encouraging cooperation with various sectors, to enforce this new strategy.
Purpose: This paper is intended to provide a clauses of scope of nursing practice with nursing act. Method: This was a planning study. The provision of scope of nursing practice is constructed through critical review of literatures and regulations. The validity of the legal definition was tested through expert and staffs in affiliates of Korean Nurses Association review. Result: 'Nursing is an activity that assesses and diagnoses the reaction of an individual, family, and community for health promotion and maintenance, illness prevention and rehabilitation and to provide intervention and evaluate the results. This practices are done through nursing knowledge and skills. The nursing practices include basic nursing services (general hygiene, environment and safety control, emotional and physical comfort, examination and surgery related care, systematic observation and reporting about patients, activity and organ function maintenance), practice of doctor's regimen, consulting and education to patients, reference, collaboration and management with other health personnel, public health activity by regulation. And nursing standards are set by a separate code. Conclusions: The result of this study can be used to offer for nursing act. So, This legal definition will be constantly discussed and extended to reflect actual nursing practice.
