Purpose: This study is to identify factors associated with performance of occupational health services in small-sized workplaces in Korea. Methods: The data were collected from a random sample of 1,158 occupational health managers working for small-sized workplaces across the nation in which occupational health services were supported by Korean Industrial Health Association. A structured questionnaire was self-administrated by occupational health managers about characteristics of workplaces, occupational health managers, and performance level of occupational health services. Results: Stepwise multiple regression analyses revealed that factors associated with performance of occupational health services in small-sized workplaces included supervisor being designated, occupational health manager having received safety and health training, and employer's concern with activities of health management. Conclusion: Government should make efforts to raise the level of employer's concern to occupational health activities. And it is needed to promote health managing staff as a core personnel to self-management for occupational health system.
The prevalence rate of osteoporosis in older men and women has recently increased, and thus bone health is a major concern in Korea. This concern, along with increasing concern regarding youth height, has led to growth of the functional food industry for children, reaching approximately 200 billion won. It is necessary to develop safe and effective functional materials for bone growth and health. Foods are excellent sources of functional material as they are safe to use. It is well known that the phosphopeptide casein, which is derived from milk, is effective against osteoporosis by aiding in the absorption of calcium. In our study, collagen peptides derived from porcine skin were evaluated as a functional material for bone growth, as several peptides have been shown to aid in osteoblast formation.

Objectives : Health behaviors that contribute to the leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and social problems among youth and adults are mostly established during youth, extend into adulthood, and are interrelated. The purpose of this study is to investigate health behavior, juvenile delinquent behavior, mental status and to understand related factor to health behavior. Methods : The study items of life style were health related habit including smoking, drinking, breakfast, regular diet, regular exercise, sleeping time and weight status. Also, sexual evidence, violence, suicidal perceptions were surveyed. Questionnaire survey was conducted from January to February, 2000 by adolescence living in Kyunggi-Do. Data were collected by self-administered questionares. The collected data were analyzed using PC-SPSS 9.0 version. Results : Most students perceived to be healthy themselves but just two thirds students had concern for health. 64.9% ever drank alcohol, 26.4% ever smoked, and also and 2.9% had attempted suicide during preceding the survey. The rate of sleeping over 8 hours is 31.8%, 65.6% had breakfast. Multiple regression analysis to find related factor with adolescents health behavior were conducted. As a results, concern for health, sex, grade, spending money and attempt to suicide were related to health behavior. Conclusion : These results showed that many efforts to improve the health-concern are necessary and suggest the need for further studies including follow-up study, intervention study on the relationship of life style.
This study was conducted because of the investigator's concern for the high incidence and fatal nature of cancer in prime years of human life. The purpose of this study was to investigate risk factors on compilance for preventive health behavior of cancer. The data on which the analysis was based come from a survey of 828 married men & women, 40-59 years old. The instrument of the study were 'Health Belief Model' by Becker. The Data was analyzed using X--test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, Stepwise Multiple Regression. The followings were the result; 1. The examined group had a higher scores than the non-examined group in health belief variables. (p<0.001) 2. The higher level of health belief variables, the higher level of compliance for preventive health behavior is. (p<0.001) 3. The Stepwise Multiple Regression of compliance for preventive health behavior on the variables in the health belief model; Approximataly 65.5% of the variance of compliance for preventive health behavior was accounted for by health concern, susceptibility and barriers in combination. This meant that other factors seemed to influence preventive health behavior since the linear combination of variables failed to explain the remaining 34.5% of preventive health behavior of cancer. It tended to cost doubt on the usefulness of 5 variables in this model. Therefore further study to investigate the influential factors preventive health behavior of cancer is necessary.
Hazardous wastes released into the general environment are of concern to the public and to public health authorities. In response to this concern, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, as amended (commonly called Superfund), was enacted in 1980 to provide a framework for environmental, public health, and legal actions concerning uncontrolled releases of hazardous substances. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) was created by Superfund to address the public health issues of hazardous wastes in the community environment. Two key Agency programs, Public Health Assessments and Toxicological Profiles, are designed to assess the risk to human health of exposures to hazardous substances that migrate from waste sites or through emergency releases (e.g., chemical spills). The Agency's public health assessment is a structured process that permits ATSDR to identify which waste sites or other point sources require traditional public health actions (e.g.. human exposure studies, health studies, registries, health surveillance, health advisories). The ATSDR qualitative public health assessment complements the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's quantitative risk assessment. For Superfund purposes, both assessments are sitespecific. ATSDR's toxicological profiles are prepared for priority hazardous substances found most frequently at Superfund sites. Each profile presents the current toxicologic and human health effects information about the substance being profiled. Each profile also contains Minimal Risk Levels (MRLs), a type of risk assessment value. This paper covers ATSDR's experience in conducting public health assessments and developing MRLs, and it relates this experience to recommendations on how to improve chemical risk assessments.
Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), an octane booster that is added to the reformulated gasoline, has been a widespread contaminant in aquatic ecosystem. MTBE is a recalcitrant pollutant having low biodegradability. Due to its higher water solubility and low octanol-water partition coefficient, it can be rapidly transported to the surrounding water environment. Also, MTBE is a known animal carcinogen, and is classified as a possible human carcinogen by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The adverse effect of MTBE to aquatic biota was widely reported. In Korea, the recent detection of MTBE in groundwater near gasoline filling stations has drawn concern to public health and ecosystem. To address this concern, the effect of MTBE to human health and ecosystem was discussed in this review. Also, ecotoxicity data of MTBE for fish, invertebrates, and algae were extensively compared to estimate the hazard concentration 5($HC_5$) of MTBE as a screening level.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of mothers on their children's oral health and their concern for that by socio-demographic characteristics and the relationship of their awareness of methods of dental-caries prevention to their practice of the methods. Methods : The subjects in this study were 337 guardians of preschoolers at kindergartens and daycare centers. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 25 to May 27, 2011, and the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 18.0. Results : 1.Self-rated concern for children's oral health, 87.7 percent and 12.1 percent replied, "So-so." Whether they were working or not and whether they were mainly responsible for child rearing made significant differences to that(p<.05). 2. As to subjective awareness of their children's oral health, the largest group of the mothers answered "So-so." (44.9%) The second replied that their children were in good oral health(40.5%), and the third group in poor oral health(14.2%). 3. The relationship between self-rated concern for their children's oral health and awareness of methods of caries prevention, statistically significant differences were found according to toothbrushing education and sealant(p<.05). There were no statistically significant differences in practice, but application of fluoride was the least. 4. The relationship between self-rated awareness for their children's oral health and awareness of the preventive methods of caries, there were statistically significant gaps in awareness of toothbrushing education(p<.05). In practice, statistically significant gaps were found in practice of toothbrushing education and sugar-intake restriction(p<.01). 5. In regard to the correlation between awareness and practice of the preventive methods of caries, awareness of all the factors involving toothbrushing education, sealant, application of fluoride and restriction of sugar intake had a significant positive correlation to practice of them. Better awareness led to better practice. Conclusions : In order to ensure children's successful oral health care, more authentic education of how to prevent dental caries should be offered by experts such as dental hygienists and dentists. Especially, detailed information on application of fluoride, restriction of sugar intake and pit and sealant should be provided for mothers to help their children to stay away from dental caries.
The purpose of current study is to verify a formulated model that explains the influence of informational clues(Nutritional label information and Mass media information) on subjective knowledge, concern, satisfaction, and behavioral intention toward healthy foods in context of full-service restaurants. The results of present study demonstrated that all informational clues have significant influence on both knowledge and concern about health and the significant relationships were confirmed between knowledge, concern, emotional pleasure, and behavioral intention. This study may contribute to develop meaningful marketing strategic for healthy foods in full-service sector, and it can be utilized as a critical study to establish an attractive business strategics to increase revenue as well as satisfy healthy foods consumers in full-service restaurant consumers.
Recently, there has been considerable concern about waste water discharges of chromium. The Chromium(IV) is of particular concern because this form has been demonstrated to be public health hazard. Chromium(IV) could be removed by the method of electrolysis from plating waste water. It was found that almost all of chromium(IV) present could be treated by electrolysis at current, 3A and pH 8.
