  • Two-Lane, two-way roads account for approximately 92% of total road length in Korea and accomplish the majority of regional transport activities. Nevertheless not too many research have been made on two-lane roads particularly efficiency related topics such as capacity and travel time studies. In this study a full scale data collection was conducted using video equippments on rural two-lane roads to determine capacity Passenger Car Equivalents(PCE) and Level of Service criterion. Various PC programs were utilized to reduce traffic data and Walker ME? and Headway Method were employed to determine PCE's for heavy vehicles. The reseach has shown that capacity and PCE's for two-land two-way roads in Korea are 3200 pcph and 1.1∼1.9 resectively. In addition percent time delay was used as the basis of developing Level of service criterion on two-lane roads in Korea.

  • Presently metro in our country has higher rate of passengers as a public transportation of urban area than other transportations. And road is under very restrictive condition to be expanded in many aspects because the streets are completely choked. Therefore increase of capacity in metro and reduction of headway has been seriously required and utmost efforts has been taken by related fields to meet the requirements. The concept of CBTC system came out from this background. CBTC system can be implemented to detect t location without using the track circuits. It h advantages in aspects of signalling equipments and maintenance. This study investigated exa radio communication system and applicable norms in other countries. And it also revie suggestion for the establishment of radio freq radio network to be considered for application control system by radio under Korean metro env

  • A robust adaptive technique for the longitudinal control of a platoon of automated vehicles is presented. A nonlinear model is used to represent the vehicle dynamics of each vehicle within the platoon. The external disturbance such as wind gust and a disturbance term due to engine transmission variations and so on are considered. The state observer is used to avoid direct measurement of the relative velocity or acceleration between the controlled and leading vehicles or the controlled vehicle's acceleration. It is shown that platoon stability can be recovered in operation even if a speed dependent spacing policy is adopted, which incorporates a constant time headway in addition to the constant distance. The simulation results demonstrate excellent tracking even in the presence of disturbances.

  • The effects of passing lanes on traffic flow on rural two-lane highways have been investigated in this research. Field study results were compared with the computer simulation model, TRARR, TRARR model appears to be in good agreement with field study results except that average speed and distribution of platoon sizes showed a small amount of discrepancy, which is believed to be caused by too large a headway definition of 6 second for a vehicle platoon. Using the TRARR model, 4 situations including the existing condition, installation of passing lanes, improvement of design speed, and expansion to a four lane highway were evaluated. Traffic volume levels of 500,1000, and 1500 vph and truck composition of 20 and 40% were also considered making a total of 24 computer runs. It is concluded in this research that the installation of passing lanes is the most effective method to improve traffic operation on two-lane high ways except the alternative of four lane highway expansion.

  • This study is concerned with the control system design using Labview Simulation Interface Toolkit and Matlab/simulink combined system for an application to the personal rapid transit system which has very short headway, requiring accurate speed control to avoid the impact between the vehicles. A simple equation of motion for a vehicle which is activated on the linear motor is introduced. A speed profile that should be tracked by a rear vehicle is produced based on the state information of the two vehicles(the preceding vehicle and the rear vehicle). The speed profile tracking control system is designed by Matlab/simulink. The simulation results show that the proposed control system is effective to evaluate the speed tracking performance.

  • The more feeding distance of substation is long and travel vehicle increases in feeding section, power supply leaches the limits. And if it exceeds the limit, it causes a serious trouble for train operation. Therefore, it is designed that the number of train increases constantly until 2030. So consistent power supply according to the increasement of vehicle in power system at present Seoul-Pusan high speed railway, regular operation in case of extended feeding occurring accidents in substation, and the least headway scheduled at relevant section and the effects installing compensation facility in case of impossible extended feeding is examined.

  • In urban railways operated by 10 cars or 8 cars per trainset, passengers split up and board a train. On-board passengers for each car are not aware of congestion level of other cars of the train. Passengers waiting at stations can not predict congestion rate of the car which they get on. Therefore, the number of passengers is not equally distributed. The cars with a relatively low congestion level and the ones with a high level coexist in the train. The objective of this paper is to enhance passenger convenience and improve train operational efficiency through operational headway adjustments according to congestion level of each car. It also aims to spread passengers out evenly and assess the degree of congestion on each car by measuring the weight of each car including passengers during peak and off-peak hours.

  • For the design and maintenance of highways and road structures, the statistical data are needed for the vehicle, especially heavy truck crossing. So far, static weighing has been used but it needs fixed station, crews, and it takes a lot of time. Also truck mix and headway distances cannot be obtained. Weigh-In-Motion system uses the sensor as a weighing scale and collects the axle weights, axle distances, vehicle types and etc. without stopping or slowing down the vehicle. Objectives of the study is make a determination of WIM Sensor for Implementation of U-Overloaded Vehicle Regulation System.

  • Express subway system is one of the effective systems adapting to improve service level. Express trains make fewer passenger stop, using a double track or a bypass track, than local trains which served all stations, Express service has been very popular with passengers who travel uninterrupted between terminals, but is has generated some dissatisfaction among passengers who experience longer waiting time on stations. This study aims at proposing the methodology to analyze changes of travel pattern in subway system adapting the express service and to estimate the time saving effects resulting from the installation of the express system. This methodology is evaluated in the fifth line under an assumpt ion that express subway system are adapted. Based on the results of the case study, the following conclusions are made: First, express system reduce a total travel time of 13% or above. Second, shorter headway of express trains increases the time saving effects on subway system. although it requests more waiting time to local train passenger. Third, an installation of Express system to Seoul subway system can augment subway demand in seoul metropolitan area.
