  • The purpose of this study was to minimize of entrance surface dose (ESD) at the eye using high kVp technique in the computed radiography. We used REX-650R (Listem, Korea) general X-ray unit, and external detector with ESD dosimeter of Piranha 657 (RTI Electronics, Sweden). We used head of the whole body phantom. The total 64 images of X-ray anterior-posterior of skull were acquired using the film/screen (F/S) method and the digital of computed radiography method. The three radiology professor of more 10 years of clinical career evaluated a X-rays images in the same space by 5-point scale. The external detector was performed measurement of ESD of three times by same condition on the eye of the head phantom. The good image quality in the F/S method (90 kVp, 2.5 mAs) showed at the minimized ESD of 0.310 ${\pm}$ 0.001 mGy. the good image quality in the computed radiography method (90 kVp, 2.0 mAs) showed at the minimized ESD of 0.180 ${\pm}$ 0.002 mGy (P = 0.002). Finally the radiation dose could reduced about 50% in the computed radiography method more than the F/S method. In addition the eye entrance surface dose using high kVp technique with the computed radiography was reduced 92% more than conventional technique (F/S method).

  • Among numerous factors that have an effect on visual field, the effects of background condition on the size of the visual field were investigated to obtain more practical visual field that can be readily applicable to industrial settings. A visual experiment was conducted, in which the subject was instructed to search a target with distinct orientations. Size contrast, meridian, nontarget density, and subject's gender showed a significant effect on the size of the visual field at $\alpha=0.01$. The size of the visual field was linearly proportional to size contrast, and inversely proportional to density. Female's visual fields were found to be significantly larger than male subjects', The size of the visual field on horizontal axis was larger than that on vertical axis, and the size of the head & eye field on right meridian was also larger than that on left meridian. The shape was found to be horizontally oriented oval and statistically asymmetric with respect to horizontal and vertical axes. The regression equations to predict the visual fields on the given background condition were suggested. The visual fields suggested in this study would be valuable to the design of visual displays and the panel layout of various displays and controls.

  • Depending upon the eye and head movement, the visual field is often classified into three categories ; stationary field, eye field and head and eye field. To investigate the effect of background condition on the size of the visual field, an experiment was conducted, in which the subject was instructed to search a target with distinct orientations. In each trial, a single target was presented on the perimeter modified to cover the range of 330 .deg. around the fixation point, with the visual angle subtended 1.4 .deg. vertically and horizontally. Nontarget density, meridian, size contrast and subject showed a significant effect on the visual field at .alpha. =0.01, where density was inversely proportional to the size of the visual field, and size contrast linearly proportional to the size of the visual field. The size of the visual field on horizontal axis was larger than that on vertical axis, and that on right and upper meridian was also larger than on left and lower meridian. The shape was found to be horizontally oriented oval and statistically asymmetric with respect to horizontal and vertical axes. In addition, the regression equations to predict the visual field on the given background condition were suggested. These results were expected to be used as a design guideline when arranging displays and controls on panels such as automobile display panels, cockpits, etc.

  • Head fixed type multi-focus display system using Galvano-scanner and DMD(Digital Micro-mirror Device), which is able to perfectly accommodate, can solve eye fatigue due to conflict between convergence eye movement and accommodation action in stereoscopic display. This system is able to accommodate through making convergence point about each view point and offering it in front of observer's pupil by using laser scanning method. In this paper, we analyzed laser scanning method of this multi-focus display system. And multi-focus display system based on this analysis was made, which showed that focus adjustment was possible through video camera. As a result, formation principle of view point of multi-focus system by laser scanning method was verified.

  • There are many display panels in the flight cockpit and pilots get various flight information from those displays. The ergonomic layout of the displays must be determined based upon frequency of use and sequence of use. This study investigated the visual search patterns of the six display groups(one head-up-display: HUD, two multi function displays: MFDs, one engine group: EG, one flight display group: FD and others) in a fighting aircraft. Four expert pilots conducted Imaginary flight in the physical mock-up and the eye movements were collected using eye tracking system. Data of dwell time, frequency of use, and eye movement path were collected. Pilots spent most of time on HUD(55.2%), and others (21.6%), FD(14.2%), right MFD(4.7%), EG(3.2%), and left MFD(1.1%) in descending order. Similarly HUD(42.8%) and others(30.0%) were the most frequently visited displays. These data can be used in the layout of cockpit displays and the determination of optimal visual search pattern.

  • We propose a depth-fused-type three-dimensional (3D) near-eye display implemented using a birefringent lens set that is made of calcite. By using a birefringent lens and image source (28.70 mm × 21.52 mm), which has different focal lengths according to the polarization state of the incident light, the proposed system can present depth-fused three-dimensional images at 4.6 degrees of field of view (FOV) within 1.6 Diopter (D) to 0.4 D, depending on the polarization distributed depth map. The proposed method can be applied to near-eye displays like head-mounted display systems, for a more natural 3D image without vergence-accommodation conflict.

  • We examined the relative growth of Microstomus achne during early life stages of laboratory-reared larvae and juveniles. Turning points in the relative growth of preanal length and upper jaw length against total length occurred during the settlement period (11.12-19.91 mm in total length). However, turning points in the relative growth of head length and eye diameter, as compared to total length, occurred during metamorphosis (17.57-22.47 mm in total length). Our results suggest that Microstomus achne concentrates its energy on the feeding apparatus (jaw) and digestive organs (intestine) rather than sensory or neural organs (eye, head) during early larval stage growth.

  • We constructed 3-D images by HMD (Head Mount Display) type and polarization technique through which a training instrument of binocular function based on clinical vision therapy was developed and investigated its demand. To design the instrument that performs Test- Diagnosis - (Prescription) - Training - Treatment we provided a customized training method for the trainers using optical IT instruments of binocular test. Through the contents and the instruments of the vision therapy technology developed in this work we can replace the current vision test instruments to those costing 60% lower price in eye clinics and eye glasses shops. By replacing the existing vision test instruments it is possible to create a new market of the vision therapy in vision training instruments.

  • Purpose: Hrd1 has recently emerged as a critical regulator of B-cells in autoimmune diseases. However, its role in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to examine Hrd1 expression and B-cell accumulation and their possible roles in CRSwNP. Methods: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting were used to assess gene and protein expression in nasal tissue extracts. Cells isolated from nasal tissues and peripheral blood mononuclear cells were characterized by flow cytometry. Local antibody production was measured in tissue extracts with a Bio-Plex assay. Additionally, changes in Hrd1 expression in response to specific inflammatory stimuli were measured in cultured dispersed polyp cells. Results: Nasal polyps (NPs) from patients with eosinophilic CRSwNP (ECRS) had increased levels of Hrd1, B-cells and plasma cells compared with NPs from patients with non-eosinophilic CRSwNP (non-ECRS) or other control subjects (P < 0.05). The average Hrd1 levels in B-cells in NPs from ECRS patients were significantly higher than those from non-ECRS patients and control subjects (P < 0.05). NPs also contained significantly increased levels of several antibody isotypes compared with normal controls (P < 0.05). Interestingly, Hrd1 expression in cultured polyp cells from ECRS patients, but not non-ECRS patients, was significantly increased by interleukin-$1{\beta}$, lipopolysaccharide and Poly(I:C) stimulation, and inhibited by dexamethasone treatment (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Differential Hrd1 expression and B-cell accumulation between the ECRS and non-ECRS subsets suggests that they can exhibit distinct pathogenic mechanisms and play important roles in NP.
