A total of 72 Black Bengal goats of 2.5 to 3.5 and 4.0 to 6.0 years old were used in this study. Equal number of animals were included in Fasciola gigantica infected and non-infected control groups. For each age and treatment groups 18 blood samples were collected in glass vials contained EDTA anticoagulant in summer and winter seasons before the animals were slaughtered at abottoir. Packed cell volume (PCV) was determined using microhematocrit and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration by cyanmethemoglobin methods. The PCV of F. gigantica infected animals were significantly lower than the non-infected animals. The average PCV values obtained were 26.60 and 32.20% for F. gigantica infected and non-infected animals, respectively. The Hb values of infected animals were significantly lower than the non-infected animals. The average Hb values obtained were 9.17 and 10.51 gm% for F. gigantica infected and non-infected goats, respectively. There was no significant effect of age and season on the values of PCV and Hb of infected and non-infected animals.

Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) hairy root transformed with Agrobacterium rhizogenes (strain A4) was examined cytogenetically and histologically to assess its characteristics. The optimum growth of hairy root obtained in hormone-free MS medium (sucrose 30 g/L, pH5-6) for long period cultures. All hairy root strains (HB1, HB2, HB3) had the 2n diploid number (2n=48) of chromosomes in root tip cells. There were no alteration in chromosome structure except in one cell of HB3 strain. Results of SDS-PAGE showed a few difference in pattern and number of bands between normal and hairy root of ginseng. The root anatomy of normal root and hairy root differed each other. The hairy root had a clearly defined vascular strand, and the morphology of cortical cells were disorganised with large intercellular spaces.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the relationship between the sense of touch and mechanical properties of man-made leather. The first was to develop the five conversion equations which convert mechanical properties of man-made leather into five factor scores, which express five factors of the sense of touch(surface property, stretchiness, thickness & weight, thermal property(warmth & coolness), and moisture property(sticky & clingy)). The second was to develop the conversion equation which converts five factor scores into score of the sense of touch. Five factor scores were predicted by the following mechanical properties; surface property factor by log2HB and (log2HB)2, stretchiness factor by logEM, thickness & weight factor by logT, log2HB, logW, thermal property factor by logT, logHB, logSMd, and moisture property factor by logMMD, RC, RC2, (logEM)2, RT2. Subsequently, these five factor scores were converted into score of the sense of touch. The predictive abilities of the developed equations were satisfied.
Genetic variation of hemoglobin and erythrocyte ganglisoside monooxygenase were analyzed in Korean nature dog Sapsarees by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis and thin layer chromatography. Hemoglobin has three phenotypes A, B and AB, which are controlled by two codominant alleles, {TEX}$Hb^{a}${/TEX} and {TEX}$Hb^[b}${/TEX}, at one autosomal locus. Gene frequencies of {TEX}$Hb^{a}${/TEX} and {TEX}$Hb^{b}${/TEX} were 0.537 and 0.4625. Ganglioside monooxygenase has two phenotypes, dominant and recessive. They are controlled by a dominant allele {TEX}$Gmo^{a}${/TEX} and a recessive allele {TEX}$Gmo^{g}${/TEX}. Frequencies of {TEX}$Gmo^{a}${/TEX} and {TEX}$Gmo^{g}${/TEX} were 0.5477 and 0.4523.
Casting alloys, both precious and non-precious, were by heat in order to observe the change in HB and the results were : 1. The hard treatment showed 1.4 - 1.5 times as high as the soft treatment in HB. 2. The experiment shows that Au-Pt should be contained more than 75% to prevent color change. 3. Cu by hard teatment played the greatect part in creasing the solidity of Ag-Cu alloy. 4. Casting Co-Cr alloys showed little difference of HB in heat treatment.
Halogen atoms in a molecule are traditionally considered as electron donors, since they have unshared electrons. Normally when they are bonded, there are three lone pair electrons. These lone pairs can function as Lewis bases. However, when they are bound to electron withdrawing groups, they can act as Lewis acids. Since the situation is similar hydrogen bonding (HB), this type of interaction is named as halogen bonding (XB). This mainly comes from the uneven distribution of electron density around the halogen atoms. Since the electron density around halogen atom opposite to ${\sigma}$-bond is depleted, its electropositive region is called ${\sigma}$-hole. This ${\sigma}$-hole can attract halogen bond acceptors, requiring more stringent directionality compared to HB. Since this interaction mainly comes from electrostatic origin, the geometry tends to be linear. Since the XB energy is comparable to corresponding HB. Still in its infancy, XB shows a broad range of applicability, with potentially more useful properties, compared to corresponding HB.

Low hemolysis is one of the key factors in the production of successful rotary blood pumps. It is, however, difficult to identify the areas where hemolysis occurs. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis enables the engineer to predict hemolysis on a computer Fluid dynamics in five different axial flow pumps was analyzed 3-dimensionally using CFD software. The impeller was rotated at a speed which supplied a flow of 5L/min at a pressure difference of 100mmHg. Changes in the turbulent kinetic energy along streamlines through the pumps were computed. Reynolds' shear stress( (equation omitted) ) was calculated using the turbulent kinetic energy. Hemolysis was evaluated based on Reynolds'shear stress and its exposure time(t) : dHb/Hb=3.62$\times$10$^{-5}$$t^{0.785}$$\tau$$^{2.416}$ . Hemolysis of the pumps was measured in vitro using fresh bovine blood to which citrate phosphate dextrose was added to prevent clotting. A pump flow of 5L/min was maintained at a pressure difference of 100mmHg for 3h. The normalized index of hemolysis(NIH) as measured. Reynolds' shear stress was high behind the impellers. The measured NIH and the calculated hemolysis(dHb/Hb) shoed a good correlation; NIH=0.0003(dHb/Hb) (r=0.90, n=6) in the range of NIH between 0.003 and 1.1. CFD analysis can predict the in vitro results of hemolysis as well as the areas where hemolysis occurs.ysis occurs.
Background Some patients who need surgery refuse a blood transfusion because of their religious beliefs or concerns about blood-borne infections. In recent years, bloodless surgery has been performed successfully in many procedures, and is therefore of increasing interest in orthognathic surgery. Methods Ten Jehovah's Witnesses who visited our bloodless surgery center for orthognathic surgery participated in this study. To maintain hemoglobin (Hb) levels above 10 g/dL before surgery, recombinant erythropoietin (rEPO) was subcutaneously administered and iron supplements were intravenously administered. During surgery, acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) and induced hypotensive anesthesia were used. To elevate the Hb levels to >10 g/dL after surgery, a similar method to the preoperative approach was used. Results The 10 patients comprised three men and seven women. Their average Hb level at the first visit was 11.1 g/dL. With treatment according to our protocol, the average preoperative Hb level rose to 12.01 g/dL, and the average Hb level on postoperative day 1 was 10.01 g/dL. No patients needed a blood transfusion, and all patients were discharged without any complications. Conclusions This study presents a way to manage patients who refuse blood transfusions while undergoing orthognathic surgery. rEPO and iron supplementation were used to maintain Hb levels above 10 g/dL. During surgery, blood loss was minimized by a meticulous procedure and induced hypotensive anesthesia, and intravascular volume was maintained by ANH. Our practical approach to orthognathic surgery for Jehovah's Witnesses can be applied to the management of all patients who refuse blood transfusions.
Screening suitable strains with high temperature adaptability is of great importance for reducing the cost of temperature control in microalgae cultivation, especially in summer. To obtain high temperature-tolerant diatoms, water samples were collected in summer from 7 different regions of China across the Northeast, North and East. A total of 731 water samples was collected and from them 131 diatom strains were isolated and identified based on the 18S rRNA sequences. Forty-nine strains out of the 131 diatoms could survive at 30℃, and 6 strains with relatively high biomass and lipid content at high temperature were selected and were found to be able to grow at 35℃. Cyclotella sp. HB162 had the highest dry biomass of 0.46 g/l and relatively high triacylglycerol (TAG) content of 237.4 mg/g dry biomass. The highest TAG content of 246.4 mg/g dry biomass was obtained in Fistulifera sp. HB236, while Nitzschia palea HB170 had high dry biomass (0.33 g/l) but relatively low TAG content (105.9 mg/g dry biomass). N. palea HB170 and Fistulifera sp. HB236 presented relatively stable growth rates and lipid yields under fluctuating temperatures ranging from 28 to 35℃, while Cyclotella HB162 maintained high lipid yield at temperatures below 25℃. The percentage of saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids in all the 6 strains was 84-91% in total lipids and 90-94% in TAGs, which makes them the ideal feedstock for biodiesel.
