  • Optimal date to cover plastic film tunnel for hastening the harvest and increasing the yield in asparagus was studied using 2-year-old 'Green tower' cultivar in Jeju. Plastic film tunnel was covered on January 10 and 21, and February 10 and 25 in 2004. The asparagus spear sprouted on March 3 in the control. They emerged earlier by about 2 to 3 weeks in the plots covered on January 10 and 25 than the control. First harvesting was hastened by 3 weeks in the plots covered on February 10 and two weeks in the plots covered on January 25 and February 10 compared to the control. Yield per plant was the highest in plastic film tunnel covered on January 10 and 25. Early harvesting in february in plastic film tunnel covered on January 10 and 25 were 325 and 333 kg/10a respectively with no significant difference between two treatments whereas yield was low significantly in plastic film tunnel covered on February 10 and 25.

  • This study was analyzed the effects of boron (B), calcium (Ca), silicon (Si) on quality and shelf life of 'Unicorn' cherry tomato at the light red maturity-stage. The storage conditions were modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) by oxygen transmission rate (OTR) packaging film at $5^{\circ}C$, $11^{\circ}C$, and $24^{\circ}C$. Respiration and ethylene production were the lowest in B + Ca + Si -treated tomato fruits. The lowest fresh weight loss and the longest shelf life resulted from the B + Ca + Si treatment. And the firmness was enhanced by B + Ca + Si treatment at harvest time, and it was retained after storage at $5^{\circ}C$, $11^{\circ}C$, and $24^{\circ}C$. Significantly lower soluble solids, lycopene, and color development were found at B + Ca + Si-treated tomato fruits compared with control after storage. Moreover, the highest titratable acidity and vitamin C content were observed in B + Ca + Si-treated tomato fruits after storage. From the above results, it was concluded that B + Ca + Si combined treatment can delay the maturity of cherry tomato after harvesting, and retained the firmness and prolong the shelf life.

  • Water quality model applicable paddy field was developed using field experiment during 1999 ${\sim}$ 2002. This model involves inputs from fertilization and sediment release as dirac delta function and continuous source function, respectively, and can simulate various processes such as ponded depth, surface drainage, total nitrogen concentration and total phosphorus concentration in a daily basis. The model was calibrated using data collected from field experiments which was irrigated with ground water and validated from field experiments which was irrigated with surface water. The nutrient concentration of surface water depended on the fertilization and dirac delta function can efficiently explain the valiance of nutrient concentration of surface water by fertilizer. As a result of calibration and validation, this model demonstrates good agreement. The model fit efficiencies ($R^2$) of ponded depth, surface concentration of TN and TP were 0.93,0.98 and 0.95, respectively for calibration, and those of TN and TP were 0.99 and 0.70, respectively for validation. We can apply lake and reservoir model to analysis paddy field considered with shallow ponded system, but it will need so many parameters and have much uncertainty. Fortunately, paddy field have a series of cultural practices yearly basis, such as irrigation-fertilization-forced drain-harvest with a similar time , so simple model may explain the mechanism for paddy field. Water quality model for paddy field developed in this study is simply, needs little parameters, but appeared high applicability to evaluate paddy filed drainage. We recommend this model to estimate nutrient loading from paddy field and establish best management practice.

  • This study was conducted to find a potential effect of ethephon or dichlorprop spray on the fruit growth and maturation in 'Niitaka' pears. Chemicals were applied between June 10 to 24 (7-9 weeks after full bloom). Ethephon in the range from 25 ppm to 100 ppm, and dichlorprop from 20 ppm to 40 ppm reduced the fruit size regardless application time and concentration. The fruit growth was more inhibited at the higher concentrations in both chemicals. Flesh firmness was more rapidly decreased in the fruit treated by both chemicals. Firmness at harvest was lowest in the treatment of 100 ppm ethephon. The climacteric increase of ethylene synthesis occurred earlier in the fruit treated by ethephon or dichlorprop regardless application concentrations and the maximum peak of ethylene production was rugher. Total phenolics significantly reduced in fruits treated with ethephon. However, the contents of soluble solids and acid were not affected by ethephon or dichlorprop treatment. Ground color was changed rapidlys by the treatments resulting in the early maturation of fruit. Optimum maturity of fruit was shortened 2-3 days by ethephon and 3-4 days by dichlorporp when maturity was determined on the basis of ground color development and firmness.

  • We conducted this study to determine the recommended application rate of fertilizer for Houttuynia cordata Thunb cultivation. The effects of various application levels of N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$ fertilizers on the growth of this plant were investigated and the associated changes in soil properties were evaluated in the field. Soil pH at harvest time of Houttuynia cordata Thunb did not differ from that before fertilization, whereas EC tended to decrease during cultivation. The soil organic matter (SOM) and available phosphorus increased after treatment, and the amount of applied fertilizer ($P_2O_5$) and available phosphorus were proportional. The nitrogen absorption amount increased in N 100% treatment, but decreased in N 150% treatment. The phosphorus absorption amount rose with the fertilizer treatment concentration until $P_2O_5$ 150% treatment. The amount of absorbed potassium decreased in treatments with $K_2O$ 150% and $K_2O$ 200%. The plant length was the longest in N 100%, $P_2O_5$ 150%, and $K_2O$ 200%. The stem diameter was estimated to be 3.46 - 3.67 mm in N 100 - 200% treatment, 3.55 - 3.67 mm in $P_2O_5$ 100 - 150%, and 3.79 mm in $K_2O$ 200%. The number of tillers did not differ amongst fertilization treatments. The fresh weight was summed to be 3.67 ton/10 a in N 100% treatment, 3.79 Mg/10 a in $P_2O_5$ 150%, and 3.83 Mg/10 a in $K_2O$ 150%. Thus, the relationship between the fertilizer amount and yields of the plant showed that the most economical quantity of fertilizers should be 10.2 N kg/10 a, 5.5 $P_2O_5$ kg/10 a, and 8.2 $K_2O$ kg/10 a for Houttuynia Cordata Thunb.

  • We investigated the host fruit, seasonal occurrence, and oviposition habits of the eurytomid wasp, Eurytoma maslovskii that cause Japanese apricot fruit drops. This eurytomid wasp was found to occur in Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Jeollanam-do, and Jeollabuk-do in Korea, and it attacked seeds of Japanese apricot, apricot, and peach. Overwintered larvae were observed until mid April, inside the stone of Japanese apricots. Pupation took place between late March and late April. More than 90% of the adult wasps emerged between late April and early May. The female wasps laid eggs just under the seed coat before endocarp hardening. The length of the wasp ovipositor was at least 5 mm, and hence, the diameters of fruits for oviposition would not exceed 2 cm. We observed up to five eggs per fruit, and the egg stage did not last for more than two days. Newly hatched larvae moved to the embryo, which is the first part that forms in a seed, and feeds on this. Larval competition occurs during this time; in this study, only one larva survived and matured. Thus, from the larva cycle of the wasp, most of the damaged fruits would have fallen by early June, before the harvest period.

  • Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) has been detected as an excellent and new forage crop in Korea. Thus the objective of the study was to determine optimum planting season, growing degree days and productivity by shifting the planting season of pearl millet. Days to emergence of Australia pearl millet inbred line were shortened from 12 days to 3 days by delaying planting season from April 15 to July 15 in Suwon, 1986, but their growing degree days remained relatively constant 32.1$^{\circ}C$ in average. Days to heading also were shortened from 96 days to 54 days by shifting the planting season, but their growing degree days varied little being 697$^{\circ}C$ in average. For grain crop, economic planting season was from early May to late June, and their harvest index also did not varied much, but suddenly reduced in the July 15 planting plot. For forage crop, economic planting season was from mid-May to mid-June with optimum planting time of mid-May. Particularly, when planted in early July, 1987 and 1988, green fodder yields of Suwon 1 pearl millet hybrid were very low being 54 percent as compared with optimum planting season's yield 10.8t/10a.

  • Cultivated varieties of sweet potato were from dry texture type to tender texture type on the basis of consumer preferences. There are many differences in the quantity of sweet potato, starch content, pigment, and sugar content depending on the cultivation season and area, even in the same variety. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to establish optimum time of harvesting through growth characteristics and variation in component like starch, sugar, polyphenol and flavonoid. Four sweet potato varieties were used in this experiment. Among them, Jinhongmi (JHM) & Yulmi (YM) were as dry texture type and Pungwonmi (PWM) & Hogammi (HGM) were as tender texture type. Sweet potatoes were transplanted on 23 May, 2016 and were investigated storage root weight and component contents every 20 days from 60 days to 120 days and surveyed yield at 110, 120, 130 days after transplantation. Result revealed that storage root weight of YM, JHM, and HGM were 30.1, 38.9, 20.8 g respectively in 60 days after transplanting. Storage roots of PWM gerw faster with the weight of 88.2 g. In 120 days after transplanting, storage root weight varied from 88.3 to 118.7 g, HGM was the smallest, and PWM was the largest. Sugar contents of sweet potato ranged from 21.0 to $23.8Brix^{\circ}$ in 60 days after transplanting and from 27.5 to $30.78Brix^{\circ}$ in 120 days after transplanting. In particular, the sugar content of HGM was the highest over $30Brix^{\circ}$ after 80 days. The starch content of dry texture type (YM, JHM) increased from 15.5% to 20.4% and tender texture type (PWM, HGM) increased from 11.0% to 17.3%. Starch content tended to be high in dry type sweet potatoes. The content of polyphenol and flavonoid were highest in 60 days after transplanting and was reduced according to cultivation period. The total yield of PWM was high as 3,154 kg/10a and large storage root of over 250 g accounted for 47.4% in 110 days after transplanting. Storage root (YM, JHM, HGM) of 81~150 g accounted for 34.9% ~ 43.2% in 120 days after transplanting. These are the most marketable. Because consumer in Korea prefers small, round and about 100g size sweet potato. The ratio of large storage root (over 250 g) were increased in all varieties at 130 days after transplanting. Therefore, it is considered appropriate to harvest PWM at 110 days and YM, JHM, HGM at 120 days after transplanting, which planted in late May.

  • Japanese agriculture has faced to several threats: aging and decrease of farmer population, global competition, and the risk of climate change as well as harsh and variable weather. On the other hands, the number of large scale farms is increasing, because farm lands have been being aggregated to fewer numbers of farms. Cost cutting, development of efficient ways to manage complicatedly scattered farm lands, maintaining yield and quality under variable weather conditions, are required to adapt to changing environments. Information and communications technology (ICT) would contribute to solve such problems and to create innovative technologies. Thus we have been developing an early warning and decision support system to reduce weather and climate risks for rice, wheat and soybean production in Japan. The concept and prototype of the system will be shown. The system consists of a weather data system (Agro-Meteorological Grid Square Data System, AMGSDS), decision support contents where information is automatically created by crop models and delivers information to users via internet. AMGSDS combines JMA's Automated Meteorological Data Acquisition System (AMeDAS) data, numerical weather forecast data and normal values, for all of Japan with about 1km Grid Square throughout years. Our climate-smart system provides information on the prediction of crop phenology, created with weather forecast data and crop phenology models, as an important function. The system also makes recommendations for crop management, such as nitrogen-topdressing, suitable harvest time, water control, pesticide spray. We are also developing methods to perform risk analysis on weather-related damage to crop production. For example, we have developed an algorism to determine the best transplanting date in rice under a given environment, using the results of multi-year simulation, in order to answer the question "when is the best transplanting date to minimize yield loss, to avoid low temperature damage and to avoid high temperature damage?".

  • Seoritae with green cotyledons refers to Korean native black beans harvested when the frost falls because the maturity is late. It is one of the beans preferred by consumers because of its softness and high sugar content. Because of late maturity, if the agricultural work is delayed by weather or agricultural schedule in green cotyledon black soybean (Seoritae), it affects seriously harvest and yield of soybeans. The aim of this study was to investigate the marginal seeding period on June 30, July 10 and July 20 in Cheongju and Jecheon area in Korea to produce stable soybean yield. The yields of green cotyledon black soybean as seeding date in Cheongju area are as follows: Seolitae (Yeoncheon), Seoltae (Goesan) and Seoritae (Gogseong), which increased by 23%, 56%, 23% and 40%, respectively, compare to July 10th to June 30th. As soybean sowing is delayed, the quality of soybean seeds has decreased due to the increase of immature seeds and fungal damaged seeds. The contents of anthocyanin in Cheongju area a functional substance of soybeans, was high on July 20 for Heukcheong, on June 30 for Seolitae (Yeoncheon), on July 10 for Seoritae (Goesan). The yields of Heukcheong and Seolitae (Yeoncheon) in Jecheon area were increased by 5% and 17%, respectively, compare to July 10th to June 30th, while Seolite (Goesan) and Seolite (Gogseong) were high in yields on June 30th. Similarly in Cheongju area, as the sowing period is delayed, the number of immature and mold damaged seeds in Jecheon area increased. The contents of anthocyanin in Jecheon area was high on July 10 for Heukcheong, on June 30 for Seolitae (Yeoncheon) and Seolitae (Goesan). From the above results, Sowing marginal date of green cotyledon black soybeans (Seolitae) in Cheongju area increased 30% in sowing on July 10 and increased 2% in sowing on July 20 compared to June 30. And Sowing marginal date of green cotyledon black soybeans (Seolitae) in Jecheon area increased 2% in July 10 compared to June 30, and the yield decreased rapidly on July 20. We have identified the seeding time limit of green cotyledon black bean in Chungbuk province. It will be possible to provide a variety of crop selection after double cropping of farmers. And by knowing the yield and seed quality of soybean according to sowing date, farmers will observe appropriate sowing period of soybeans for high quality. From the viewpoint of consumers, functional substances of Seoritae will meet the desire for health.
