A Dimensionless Index for Quantitative Evaluation of Apple Freshness

  • Though the freshness for agricultural products is an important factor related to their quality management, this terminology is being used restrictedly because it is very subjective. In this study, a dimensionless index which had the span of the maximum of 1 through the minimum of 0 was proposed to describe freshness of the product with time-variant quality and was applied to Tsugaru and Fuji apples. First, the compressive properties having the linearity in their change regarding time elapsed after harvest were selected. For Tsugaru apple, bio-yield and rupture forces had high correlation with time while for Fuji, bio-yield and rupture deformations had high correlations. When the slope, or ratio of force to deformation, was considered, the effect of cultivar could be neglected. When the linearly time-variant compressive properties for Tsugaru and Fuji apples were involved in the freshness indices, they described well freshness of apples. Also, the freshness decay constant depicted a characteristic which related to freshness decay rate. Therefore, the freshness index can be utilized to manage the quality during storage and distribution of apples.

제분방법에 따른 품종별 쌀가루의 이화학적 특성 및 소화율 (Physicochemical Properties of Rice Flour of Different Cultivars using Wet and Dry Milling Processes)

  • 본 연구는 아밀로스 함량이 다양한 5가지 쌀 품종별 제분방법에 따른 쌀가루 이화학적, 식품학적 특성을 분석하고 다양한 가공이용성 구명을 위한 기초자료로 활용하고자 한다. 1. 품종별 습식 및 건식 쌀가루의 수분특성을 분석한 결과, $50^{\circ}C$에 비해 $80^{\circ}C$에서 건식쌀가루의 WAI, WSI가 가장 높은 결과를 나타내었고, 특히 '백옥찰'이 높은 수분흡착 및 수분용해지수를 나타내었다. 팽윤력의 경우는 아밀로스 함량과 부의상관관계를 보였고, 습식보다는 건식쌀가루의 팽윤력이 높았다. 2. 손상전분 함량은 건식쌀가루에서 높았고, 품종별 손상전분 함량은 '백옥찰>새고아미>미호>도담쌀>일품' 순으로 나타났다. 습식쌀가루의 손상전분 함량은 '백옥찰>미호>일품>새고아미>도담쌀'로 나타나 아밀로스 함량과 부의 상관관계를 보였다. 3. 가용전분함량은 '일품과 새고아미'를 제외하고, 습식으로 제분하였을 때 증가하였고, 저항전분함량은 '도담쌀'을 제외하고는 제분방법 관계없이 1% 미만이었다. '도담쌀'의 건식쌀가루 저항전분 함량은 9.18로서 습식쌀가루 6.27에 비하여 높게 나타나 가공용도에 따라서는 건식제분이 효과적일 것으로 보였다. 4. 건식쌀가루가 습식쌀가루에 비해 최고점도 및 최저점도가 높았으며, 치반점도의 경우 제분방법에 관계없이 '백옥찰'이 가장 낮은 결과를 보였다. 고아밀로스 '도담쌀'의 경우, 제분방법 및 온도변화 관계없이 점도변화가 크지 않았으며 점도가 가장 낮은 특성을 보였다. 5. 제분방법에 다른 쌀가루 품종별 혈당지수는 57.6~81.3의 범위를 나타내었고, 습식 제분 했을 경우 혈당지수가 올라가는 경향을 보였으며, '도담쌀'을 제외하고는 품종간 차이는 두드러지지 않았다. '일품과 새고아미'의 건식쌀가루의 혈당지수는 낮은 경향을 나타내었고, 특히 '도담쌀'은 가장 낮은 전분 가수분해 지수 및 혈당지수를 나타내었다.

  • Dye sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) have been extensively studied due to their various advantages such as low production cost, colorful design, and eco-friendly process. Long optical path length is one of the most effective method to improve light harvest efficiency for DSSCs. Multi-layered $TiO_2$ nano-structured film with scattering layer has been studied to generate scattering effect by many researchers. It was expected that the difference of refractive index between $TiO_2$ particles and glass frit would generate the light scattering effect and provide the long optical path length. Therefore, to enhance the scattering effect, the frits of $Bi_2O_3-B_2O_3$-ZnO glass system that has the different refractive index were added to $TiO_2$ pastes in this study. First of all, the absorbance and haze factor of $TiO_2$ electrode with dyes and the refractive index of glass frit and $TiO_2$ were measured, respectively. To study the effect of frits, the efficiencies of DSSCs added glass frit and without glass frit were compared. Our results showed slightly higher efficiency with the different absorbance and haze factor of $TiO_2$ and glass frit. It was considered that the light scattering effect would be improved with adding frits to $TiO_2$ paste. Our preliminary studies will be useful for increasing efficiency of DSSCs.

Relationship between Vertical Root Distribution and Yield Traits in IRRI's New Plant Type Rice

  • This experiment was conducted to elucidate the relation-ship between vertical distribution of rice roots and yield traits under field conditions. Eight IRRI's new plant type rices (NPTRs) were tested in a volcanic ash soil paddy field under dense (IO 10 cm) and common (20 20 cm) planting densities. These lines were evaluated to have more spikelet numbers per panicle (SNP), lower filled grain rate (FGR), and lower rough grain weight per hill (RGWH). In dense planting, rough grain weight per stem (RGWS) was increased due to heavier culm and leaf dry weight (CLDW), and both RGWS and CLDW were related with the percentage of root distribution (%RWI) in the 10~30 cm soil layer, while in common planting, RGWS was not closely related with CLDW. SNP was highly related with root dry weight (RDW) in the 0~10cm soil layer. FGR was mainly affected by ROW in the 10~30 cm soil layer under both planting densities. RGWS was positively correlated with top dry weight (TDW) and harvest index (HI), and TDW was positively correlated with RWI under common planting or %RWI under dense planting, and HI was positively correlated with RWI in the 10~30 cm soil layer only under dense planting. RGWS was closely related with root weight index by dry weight (RWI) in the 10~30 cm soil layer and %RWI in the 0~30 cm or 10~30 cm soil layer under dense planting, and with only RWI in the 10~30 cm soil layer under common planting. But RGWH showed the close positive relationship with RDW and RWI in the 10~30 cm soil layer under dense planting, while under common planting, it showed the close positive relationship with RWI and %RWI in the 10~30 cm soil layer or %RWI in the 0~30 cm soil layer. The deeper root system in rice, especially under dense planting, is important for high yield of NPTRs focusing on the increment of top mass production and harvest index.

맥주보리에서 발아세, 발아율 및 수감수성의 품종간 차이 (Varietal Variation in Germinative Energy, Capacity and Water Sensitivity for Malting Barley)

  • 수확 후 3주와 8주에 맥주보리 49개 품종의 발아세, 발아율 및 수감수성의 품종간 차이를 검토하고자 실험한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 수확 후 3주에 발아상의 물량 증가에 따른 발아세, 발아율, PI치와 수감수성의 차이는 컸으나 8주에는 그 차이가 적어서 휴비성이 발아세와 발아율을 저하시켰다. 2. 발아세는 휴비성이 소거된 8주에는 전 공시 품종이 극히 양호하였으며, CI 12062와 CI 15631등의 수감수성이 다소 커서 광범위한 육종재료를 교배에 이용할 경우 수감수성의 검정이 필요할 것으로 본다. 3. 수감수성은 저장기간에 관계없이 물 8ml 발아세, 발아율, PI치와 상관이 매우 높았으나 물 4ml에서는 상관관계가 없었다. 4. 저장기간, 품종 및 곡립의 풍만도에 따라서 발아세와 수감수성의 차이가 있으므로 등숙이 양호한 품종의 육성과 등숙향상을 위한 재배법이 연구되어야 할 것으로 생각된다.

국내산 아피오스의 수확시기와 증자처리에 따른 품질 및 항산화 특성 (Quality and Antioxidant Characteristics according to Different Harvest Periods and Steaming Treatment of Apios (Apios americana Medikus) Cultivated in Korea)

  • The quality and antioxidant characteristics of apios (Apios americana Medikus) according to different harvest periods and steaming treatment were investigated. The quality and antioxidant characteristics of apios were significantly different depending on harvest periods. Total starch contents was higher in 1st harvesting period as 62.32 g/100 g than other harvesting period. The water binding capacity and water solubility index was higher in 1st harvesting period as 228.65 and 11.29% than other harvesting period. The sucrose and total free sugar contents were 3.64~8.67 and 4.49~9.54 g/100 g, respectively. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of apios was the highest 2nd and 4th harvesting period at 4.21 mg GAE/g and 611.11 ㎍ CE/g, respectively. DPPH radical scavenging activity was higher in 1st harvesting period as 84.96 mg TE/100 g than other harvesting period, and decreased as the harvest periods were delayed. ABTS radical scavenging activity and ferric-reducing antioxidant power were 43.81~47.89 mg TE/g and 231.20~264.07 mM/100 g, and increased to 50.58~51.44 mg TE/g and 342.55~384.29 mM/100 g after heat treatment. As a result, it is thought that studies on change of quality and physicochemical characteristics according to cultivation characteristics should be preceded for cultivation stability of apios.

소맥(小麥)의 $F_2$집단(集團)에 있어서 주요(主要) 농업적(農業的) 질량(形質)의 유전변이(遺傳變異) 및 경로계수분석(徑路係數分析) (Genetic Variabilities and Path-Coefficients for Agronomic Characters in $F_2$ Populations of Wheat)

  • 소맥(小麥) $F_2$집단(集團)에 있어서 조숙(早熟) 다수성(多收性) 계통(系統)의 효율적(效率的)인 선발(選拔)에 관(關)한 기초자료(基礎資料)를 얻고자 중숙(中熟)${\times}$조숙(早熟)(올밀/새밀), 만숙${\times}$중숙(中熟)(Naphal/청계밀) 두 조합(組合)을 공시(供試)하여 $F_2$집단(集團)의 유전적(遺傳的) 변이(變異)를 조사(調査)하고 경로분석(徑路分析)을 한바 얻어진 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 유전변이계수(遺傳變異係數)는 올밀${\times}$새밀 조합(組合)에서는 수획지수(收獲指數), 립수(粒數), 수량(收量), 간장(稈長)의 순(順)으로, Naphal${\times}$청계밀 조합(組合)에서는 수획지수(收獲指數), 간장(稈長), 1,000 립중(粒重)의 순(順)으로 높았다. 유전력(遺傳力)(협의(狹意))은 양조합(兩組合)에서 출수기(出穗期), 성숙기(成熟期), 간장(稈長), 수획지수(收獲指數)가 높았고(0.525~0.808) 립수(粒數), 수량(收量)은 낮았다. 유전획득량(遺傳獲得量)(%)은 출수기(出穗期), 성숙기(成熟期)가 양조합(兩組合)에서 모두 높았고 수량(收量)은 낮았다. 1,000립중(粒重)의 유전획득량(遺傳獲得量)(%)은 Naphal${\times}$청계밀 조합(組合)에서는 높게 나타났다. 수량(收量)과 수수(穗數) 및 립수(粒數)와는 높은 정(正)의 유의상관(有意相關)을 보였고 수량(收量)에 대(對)한 직접효과(直接效果)는 수수(穗數)가 가장 컸고 다음은 립수(粒數)였다.

적엽 및 제협처리가 콩의 건물축적에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Leaf and Pod Removal on Dry Matter Accumulation of Soybean Plants)

  • 콩의 생식생장기인 착협시(R3)에 상부 40%와 하부 60%로 구분하여 엽제거와 협제거 처리에 의한 엽수와 엽건물중, 종실부와 종실건물중, 그리고 협과 경건물중에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 1992년 고려대학교 자연자원대학 적소실험농장에 황금콩을 공시하여 실시한 시험결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 상엽하협제거처리로 식물체 하부의 엽수와 엽건물중이 증가되었다. 2. 종실부와 종실건물중은 상엽하협제거로 감소되었다. 3. 상엽하협제거는 하부의 경건물중을 증가시켰으나 상부의 협건물종은 감소시켰다. 4. 상엽하협제거에서 엽/종실 비율은 3.53로 가장 높았고 수수지수는 27%로 가장 낮았다. 5. 하엽상협제거는 상엽하협제거보다 동화\ulcorner질의 전류량이 많았다.

Identification of QTLs Associated with Physiological Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Rice

  • Demand for low-input sustainable crop cultivation is increasing to meet the need for environment-friendly agriculture. Consequently, developing genotypes with high nutrient use efficiency is one of the major objectives of crop breeding programs. This study was conducted to identify QTLs for traits associated with physiological nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). A recombinant inbred population (DT-RILs) between Dasanbyeo (a tongil type rice, derived from an indica ${\times}$ japonica cross and similar to indica in its genetic make-up) and TR22183 (a Chinese japonica variety) consisting of 166 $F_8$ lines was developed and used for mapping. A frame map of 1,409 cM containing 113 SSR and 103 STS markers with an average interval of 6.5 cM between adjacent marker loci was constructed using the DT-RILs. The RILs were cultivated in ordinary-N ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=100-80-80kg/ha$) and low-N ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=50-80-80kg/ha$) (100 kg/ha) conditions. PNUE was positively correlated with the harvest index and grain yield in both conditions. Twenty single QTLs (S-QTLs) and 58 pairs of epistatic loci (E-QTLs) were identified for the nitrogen concentration of grain, nitrogen concentration of straw, nitrogen content of shoot, harvest index, grain yield, straw yield and PNUE in both conditions. The phenotypic variance explained by these S-QTLs and E-QTLs ranged from 11.1 to 44.3% and from 16.0% to 63.6%, respectively. The total phenotypic variance explained by all the QTLs for each trait ranged from 35.8% to 71.3%, showing that the expression of PNUE and related characters depends signify- cantly upon genetic factors. Both S-QTLs and E-QTLs may be useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) to develop higher PNUE genotypes.

Effect of Potassium Application on Yield-Related Characters and Contents of Starch and Hydrocyanic Acid of Cassava

  • Higher level of KCl application stimulated both leaf area index and leaf area duration in all cassava varieties, while the leaf and tuber number of the bitter varieties (high cyanide-level varieties) decreased in proportion to the level of KCl application. The root/shoot (R/S) ratio and harvest index (HI) were negatively related with the level of KCl application in all cassava varieties. The bitter varieties obtained the lowest R/S ratio at the level of 100 - 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$, while the sweet varieties (low cyanide-level varieties) acquired the highest values at the level of 50 - 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$. Also, the sweet varieties showed the lowest HI at the level of 250 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$, but the bitter varieties at the level of 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$. At 6 - 8 months after planting, the sweet varieties tended to obtain higher starch content of roots (tubers) at the level of 50 - 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$, while the bitter varieties at the level of 150 - 250 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$. Relatively lower level of 50 - 150 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$ was more appropriate for decreasing hydrocyanic acid (HCN) content of roots (tubers) in the sweet varieties at the harvest time, and the level of 250 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$ was adequate to decrease not only HCN content of leaves but also that of roots (tubers) in the bitter varieties during the growing period. To obtain higher yield and starch content of tubers, and lower HCN content of roots (tubers), it was recommended that the sweet varieties are applied with the level of 50 - 100 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$ and the bitter varieties with the level of 150 - 200 kg KCl $ha^{-1}$, respectively, in Latosol soils of Bogor areas, West Java.
