  • This paper presents a variant of the Harmony Search Algorithm (HS) and its application to discrete optimization. The main proposed modifications regarding original HS are related to stopping criterion and reinitialization of population, called Harmony Memory. In order to investigate the efficiency of the algorithm, it was applied for obtaining optimal sections of reinforced concrete columns subjected to uniaxial flexural compression. To minimize the cost of the section, the amount and diameters of the reinforcement bars and the dimensions of the columns cross sections were considered as design variables. The obtained results were compared to those generated by other optimization methods. Since, to the examples, Harmony Search reached the same results achieved by Simulated Annealing, some additional analysis are presented in order to compare these methods regarding success rate and number of iterations to reach the optimum.

  • In this study, a determination method of structural member section based on Nonlinear behaviors of steel cable-stayed bridges and the Harmony Search algorithm was presented. The Harmony Search algorithm determines the structural member section of cable-stayed bridges by repeating the process of setting the initial value, initializing the harmony memory, configuring the new harmony memory, and updating the harmony memory to search for the optimal value. The nonlinear initial shape analysis of a three-dimensional steel cable-stayed bridge was performed with the cross-section of the main member selected by the Harmony Search algorithm, and the optimal cross-section of the main members of the cable-stayed bridge, such as pylons, girders, cross-beams, and cables, reflecting the complex behavior characteristics and the nonlinearity of each member was determined in consideration of the initial tension and shape. The total weight was used as the objective function for determining the cross-section of the main member of the cable-stayed bridges, and the load resistance ability and serviceability based on the ultimate state design method were used as the restraint conditions. The width and height ratio of the girder and cross-section were considered additional restraint conditions. The optimal sections of the main members were made possible to be determined by considering the geometry and material nonlinearity of the pylons, girders, and cross-sections and the nonlinearity of the cable members. As a result of determining the optimal cross-section, it was confirmed that the proposed analysis method can determine the optimal cross-section according to the various constraint conditions of the cable-stayed bridge, and the structural member section of the cable-stayed bridge considering the nonlinearity can be determined through the Harmony Search algorithm.

  • The first-order plus dead time(FOPDT) and second-order plus dead time(SOPDT), which describes a linear monotonic process quite well in most chemical and industrial processes and is often sufficient for PID and IMC controller tuning. This paper presents an application of heuristic harmony search(HS) optimization algorithm to the identification of linear continuous time-delay systems from step response. This recently developed HS algorithm is conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search so that derivative information is unnecessary. The effectiveness of the proposed identification method has been demonstrated through a number of simulation examples.

  • The microphysical processes of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model cover the following : fall speed, accretion, autoconversion, droplet size distribution, etc. However, the microphysical processes and parameters have a significant degree of uncertainty. Parameter estimation was generally used to reduce errors in NWP models associated with uncertainty. In this study, the micro- genetic algorithm and harmony search algorithm were used as an optimization algorithm for estimating parameters. And we estimate parameters of microphysics for the Unified model in the case of precipitation in Korea. The differences which occurred during the optimization process were due to different characteristics of the two algorithms. The micro-genetic algorithm converged to about 1.033 after 440 times. The harmony search algorithm converged to about 1.031 after 60 times. It shows that the harmony search algorithm estimated optimal parameters more quickly than the micro-genetic algorithm. Therefore, if you need to search for the optimal parameter within a faster time in the NWP model optimization problem with large calculation cost, the harmony search algorithm is more suitable.

  • This paper presents an optimal design method of a hybrid structural control system considering multi-hazard. Unlike a typical structural control system in which one system is designed for one specific type of hazard, a simultaneous optimal design method for both active and passive control systems is proposed for the mitigation of seismic and wind induced vibration responses of structures. As a numerical example, an optimal design problem is illustrated for a hybrid mass damper(HMD) and 30 viscous dampers which are installed on a 30 story building structure. In order to solve the optimization problem, a self-adaptive Harmony Search(HS) algorithm is adopted. Harmony Search algorithm is one of the meta-heuristic evolutionary methods for the global optimization, which mimics the human player's tuning process of musical instruments. A self-adaptive, dynamic parameter adjustment algorithm is also utilized for the purpose of broad search and fast convergence. The optimization results shows that the performance and effectiveness of the proposed system is superior with respect to a reference hybrid system in which the active and passive systems are independently optimized.

  • The application of efficient constraint handling technique is fundamental method to find better solutions in engineering optimization problems with constraints. In this research four of constraint handling techniques are used with a meta-heuristic optimization method, harmony search algorithm, and the efficiency of algorithm is evaluated. The sample problem for evaluation of effectiveness is one of the typical discrete problems, optimal pipe size design problem of water distribution system. The result shows the suggested constraint handling technique derives better solutions than classical constraint handling technique with penalty function. Especially, the case of ${\varepsilon}$-constrained method derives solutions with efficiency and stability. This technique is meaningful method for improvement of harmony search algorithm without the need for development of new algorithm. In addition, the applicability of suggested method for large scale engineering optimization problems is verified with application of constraint handling technique to big size problem has over 400 of decision variables.

  • A hybrid search method based on the artificial bee colony algorithm (ABCA) with harmony search (HS) is suggested for finding a global solution in the field of optimization. Three cases of the suggested algorithm were examined for improving the accuracy and convergence rate. The results showed that the case in which the harmony search was implemented with the onlooker phase in ABCA was the best among the three cases. Although the total computation time of the best case is a little bit longer than the original ABCA under the prescribed conditions, the global solution improved and the convergence rate was slightly faster than those of the ABCA. It is concluded that the suggested algorithm improves the accuracy and convergence rate, and it is expected that it can effectively be applied to optimization problems with many design variables and local solutions.

  • PURPOSES : We propose a parameter-setting-free harmony-search (PSF-HS) algorithm to determine the individual sound power levels of noise sources in the cases of industrial or road noise environment. METHODS :In terms of using methods, we use PSF-HS algorithm because the optimization parameters cannot be fixed through finding the global minimum. RESULTS:We found that the main advantage of the PSF-HS heuristic algorithm is its ability to find the best global solution of individual sound power levels through a nonlinear complex function, even though the parameters of the original harmony-search (HS) algorithm are not fixed. In an industrial and road environment, high noise exposure is harmful, and can cause nonauditory effects that endanger worker and passenger safety. This study proposes the PSF-HS algorithm for determining the PWL of an individual machine (or vehicle), which is a useful technique for industrial (or road) engineers to identify the dominant noise source in the workplace (or road field testing case). CONCLUSIONS : This study focuses on providing an efficient method to determine sound power levels (PWLs) and the dominant noise source while multiple machines (or vehicles) are operating, for comparison with the results of previous research. This paper can extend the state-of-the-art in a heuristic search algorithm to determine the individual PWLs of machines as well as loud machines (or vehicles), based on the parameter-setting-free harmony-search (PSF-HS) algorithm. This algorithm can be applied into determining the dominant noise sources of several vehicles in the cases of road cross sections and congested housing complex.

  • Many methods have been developed and are in use for structural size optimization problems, In which the cross-sectional areas or sizing variables are usually assumed to be continuous. In most practical structural engineering design problems, however, the design variables are discrete. This paper proposes an efficient optimization method for structures with discrete-sized variables based on the harmony search (HS) meta-heuristic algorithm. The recently developed HS algorithm was conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search so that derivative information is unnecessary In this paper, a discrete search strategy using the HS algorithm is presented in detail and its effectiveness and robustness, as compared to current discrete optimization methods, are demonstrated through a standard truss example. The numerical results reveal that the proposed method is a powerful search and design optimization tool for structures with discrete-sized members, and may yield better solutions than those obtained using current method.
