  • Quasi Z-Source Multilevel Inverter (QZMLI) topology has attracted grid connected Photovoltaic (PV) systems in recent days. So there is a remarkable research thrust in switching techniques and control strategies of QZMLI. This paper presents the mathematical analysis of Phase shift- Pulse Width Amplitude Modulation (PS-PWAM) for QZMLI and emphasizes on the advantages of the technique. The proposed technique uses the maximum and minimum envelopes of the reference waves for generation of pulses and proportion of it to generate shoot-through pulses. Hence, it results in maximum utilization of input voltage, lesser switching loss, reduced Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the output voltage, reduced inductor current ripple and capacitor voltage ripple. Due to these qualities, the QZMLI with PS-PWAM emerges to be the best suitable for PV based grid connected applications compared to Phase shift-Pulse Width Modulation (PS-PWM). The detailed math analysis of the proposed technique has been disclosed. Simulation has been performed for the proposed technique using MATLAB/Simulink. A prototype has been built to validate the results for which the pulses were generated using FPGA /SPARTAN 3E.

  • This paper is concerned with a deadbeat current control implementation of shunt-type three-phase active power filter (APF). Although the one-dimensional deadbeat control method can attain time-optimal response of APF compensating current, one sampling period is actually required fur its settling time. This delay is a serious drawback for this control technique. To cancel such a delay and one more delay caused by DSP execution time, the desired APF compensating current has to be predicted two sampling periods ahead. Therefore an adaptive predictor is adopted for the purpose of both predicting the control error of two sampling periods ahead and bringing the robustness to the deadbeat current control system. By adding the adaptive predictor output as an adjustment term to the reference value of half a source voltage period before, settling time is made short in a transient state. On the other hand, in a steady state, THD (total harmonic distortion) of the utility grid side AC source current can be reduced as much as possible, compared to the case that ideal identification of controlled system could be made.

  • The Finite Control Set-Model Predictive Controller (FCS-MPC) for quasi Z-Source Inverters (qZSIs) is designed to reduce the number of sensors by proposing a current observer for the inductor current. Unlike the traditional FCS-MPC algorithm, the proposed model removes the inductor current sensor and observes the inductor current value based on the deposited prior optimized state as well as the capacitor voltage during this state. The proposed observer has been validated versus a typical MPC. Then, a comparative study between the proposed Modified Finite Control Set-Model Predictive Controller (MFCS-MPC) and a linear PID controller is provided under the same operating conditions. This study demonstrates that the dynamic response of the control objectives by MFCS-MPC is faster than that of the PID. On the other hand, the PID controller has a lower Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) when compared to the MFCS-MPC at the same average switching. Experimental results validate both methods using a DSP F28335.

  • This paper presents a novel switching pattern current control (SP-CC) scheme, which is applied in three-phase voltage-source converters (VSCs). This scheme can select the optimal output switching pattern (SP) by referring the basic principle of space vector modulation (SVM). Moreover, SP-CC is a method without a carrier wave. Thus, the implementation process is concise and easy. When compared with the conventional hysteresis current control (C-HCC) and the space vector-based hysteresis current control (SV-HCC), the SP-CC has the performances of faster dynamic response of C-HCC and less switching number (SN) of SV-HCC. In addition, it has less harmonic contents in the three-phase current, along with a lower switching loss and a higher efficiency. Moreover, the hysteresis bandwidth and Clarke conversion are not required in the SP-CC. The effectiveness of the presented SP-CC is verified by simulation and experimental test results. In addition, the advantages of the SP-CC, when compared with the C-HCC and SV-HCC, are verified as well.

  • A W-band frequency octupler is implemented on 100-nm GaAs pHEMT process. The fabricated octupler can be used as a local oscillator or a signal source of W-band transceivers. Three common-source doublers are connected in cascade to multiply an input signal of 10.75 GHz to 83 GHz. A common-source amplifier is followed for each doubler to improve the conversion gain and suppress the unwanted harmonics. The fabricated octupler showes high output of more than 6 dBm in the 80 - 84 GHz band and achieved excellent spurious suppression performance over 20 dBc.

  • In this paper, we proposes the three-phase embedded Z-source inverter consisting of the three embedded Z-source converters and it's the output voltage control method. Each embedded Z-source converter can produce the bipolar output capacitor voltages according to duty ratio D such as single-phase PWM inverter. The output AC voltage of the proposed system is obtained as the difference in the output capacitor voltages of each converter, and the L-C output filter is not required. Because the output AC voltage can be stepped up and down, the boost DC converter in the conventional two-stage inverter is unnecessary. To confirm the validity of the proposed system, PSIM simulation and a DSP based experiment were performed under the condition of the input DC voltage 38V, load $100{\Omega}$, and switching frequency 30kHz. Each converter is connected by Y-connection for three-phase loads. In case that the output phase voltage is the same $38V_{peak}$ as the input DC voltage and is the 1.5 times($57V_{peak}$), the simulation and experimental results ; capacitor voltages, output phase voltages, output line voltages, inductor currents, and switch voltages were verified and discussed.

  • By placing distributed generation power sources beside a big nonlinear load, these sources can be used as a power quality enhancer, while injecting some active power to the network. In this paper, a new scheme to use the distributed generation power source in both operation modes is presented. In this scheme, a fuzzy controller is added to adjust the optimal set point of inverter between compensating mode and maximum active power injection mode, which works based on the harmonic content of the nonlinear load. As the high order current harmonics can be easily rejected using passive filters, the DG is used to compensate the low order harmonics of the load current. Multilevel transformerless cascade inverters are preferred in such utilization, as they have more flexibility in current/voltage waveform. The proposed scheme is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK to evaluate the circuit performance. Then, a 1kw single phase prototype of the circuit is used for experimental evaluation of the paper. Both simulative and experimental results prove that such a circuit can inject a well-controlled current with desired harmonics and THD, while having a smaller switching frequency and better efficiency, related to previous 3-phase inverter schemes in the literature.

  • In the present study, a numerical analysis on the sloshing in a tank with the harmonic motion was investigated. A VOF method was used for two-phase flows inside the sloshing tank and a source term of the momentum equation was applied for the harmonic motion. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. The sloshing in a tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure on the tank. By these phenomena of the tank sloshing, the sloshing problems such as the failure and the noise of system can be generated. For the reduction of these sloshing problems, the various baffles such as the horizontal/vertical plate baffles and the porous baffles inside the tank are installed. With the installations of these baffles, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank, the impact pressure on the wall, the amplitude of the free surface near the wall and the sloshing noise were numerically analyzed.

  • Nowadays multilevel inverters are developing generally due to reduced voltage stress on power switches and low total harmonic distortion (THD) in output voltage. However, for increasing the output voltage levels the number of circuit devices are increased and it results in increasing the cost of converter. In this paper, a novel multilevel inverter is proposed. The suggested topology uses less number of power switches and related gate drive circuits to generate the same level in output voltage with comparison to traditional cascaded multilevel inverter. With the proposed topology all levels in output voltage can be realized. As an illustration, a symmetric 13-level and asymmetric 29-level proposed inverters have been simulated and implemented. The total peak inverse (PIV) and power losses of presented inverter are calculated and compared with conventional cascaded multilevel inverter. The presented analyses show that the power losses in the suggested multilevel inverter are less than the traditional inverters. Presented simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed inverter to obtain the maximum number of levels with less number of switches.
