  • This paper presents a novel control strategy for selective compensation of power quality (PQ) problems, depending upon the limited rating of voltage source inverters (VSIs), through a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) in a three-phase four-wire distribution system. The UPQC is realized by the integration of series and shunt active power filters (APFs) sharing a common dc bus capacitor. The shunt APF is realized using a three-phase, four-leg voltage source inverter (VSI), while a three-leg VSI is employed for the series APF of the three-phase four-wire UPQC. The proposed control scheme for the shunt APF, decomposes the load current into harmonic components generated by consumer and distorted utility. In addition to this, the positive and negative sequence fundamental frequency active components, the reactive components and harmonic components of load currents are decomposed in synchronous reference frame (SRF). The control scheme of the shunt APF performs with priority based schemes, which respects the limited rating of the VSI. For voltage harmonic mitigation, a control scheme based on SRF theory is employed for the series APF of the UPQC. The performance of the proposed control scheme of the UPQC is validated through simulations using MATLAB software with its Simulink and Power System Block set toolboxes.

  • This paper estimates the capacity of shunt type active power filters(APF) for harmonic/reactive power compensation with a thyristor converter load. The base capacity requirement of APF is defined for idealized converter load current waveform and the effect of commutation overlap on the APF capacity is examined. The APF capacity required for reactive power compensation in addition to the harmonic elimination is estimated to give maximum achievable power factor for various operating condition of the partially-loaded thyristor converter. The method of current limit of APF is introduced, and it is shown that the APF capacity can be considerably reduced by deliberately limiting the peak current while maintaining the filtering performance to meet the level std 519 regulation.

  • Due to the mismatched line impedance among distributed generation units (DGs) and uncontrolled harmonic current, the droop controller has a number of problems such as inaccurate reactive power sharing and voltage distortion at the point of common coupling (PCC). To solve these problems, this paper proposes a resistive-capacitive virtual impedance control method. The proposed control method modifies the DG output impedance at the fundamental and harmonic frequencies to compensate the mismatched line impedance among DGs and to regulate the harmonic current. Finally, reactive power sharing is accurately achieved, and the PCC voltage distortion is compensated. In addition, adaptively controlling the virtual impedance guarantees compensation performance in spite of load changes. The effectiveness of the proposed control method was verified by experimental results.

  • The main drawback of parallel type active power filters (APFs) is the large capacity required for harmonic compensation. This paper evaluates the APF capacity requirement for harmonic/reactive power compensation for thyristor converter load. Theoretically achievable maximum power factor under partial load is evaluated. it is shown that the APF capacity can be considerably reduced by deliberately limiting the peak current, while maintaining the filtering performance with an acceptable total harmonic current level. the minimum capacity requirement of APF with current limiting is evaluated as a function of the firing angle of thyristor converter and short circuit ratio(SCR).

  • Aiming at the negative sequence and harmonic problems in the operation of railway static power conditioners, an optimization compensation strategy for negative sequence and harmonics is studied in this paper. First, the hybrid RPC topology and compensation principle are analyzed to obtain different compensation zone states and current capacities. Second, in order to optimize the RPC capacity configuration, the minimum RPC compensation capacity is calculated according to constraint conditions, and the optimal compensation coefficient and compensation angle are obtained. In addition, the voltage unbalance ${\varepsilon}_U$ and power factor requirements are satisfied. A PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm is used to calculate the three indexes for minimum compensating energy. The proposed method can precisely calculate the optimal compensation capacity in real time. Finally, MATLAB simulations and an experimental platform verify the effectiveness and economics of the proposed algorithm.

  • Grid-connected inverters (GCIs) based on renewable energy sources play an important role in enhancing the sustainability of a society. Harmonic standards, such as IEEE 519 and P1547, which require the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output current to be less than 5%, should be satisfied when GCIs are connected to a grid. However, achieving a current THD of less than 5% is difficult for GCIs with an output filter under a distorted grid condition. In this study, a novel harmonic compensation method that uses a digital lock-in amplifier (DLA) is proposed to eliminate harmonics effectively at the output of GCIs. Accurate information regarding harmonics can be obtained due to the outstanding performance of DLA, and such information is used to eliminate harmonics with a simple proportional-integral controller in a feedforward manner. The validity of the proposed method is verified through experiments with a 5 kW single-phase GCI connected to a real grid.

  • DSTATCOM(Distribution STATic COMpensator) is one of the custom power devices, and protects a distribution line from unbalanced and harmonic current caused by non-linear and unbalanced loads. Conventional researches use a LPF(Low Pass Filter) to eliminate ripple component at the calculation of compensation current. This paper proposes a calculation of compensation current using phase shift that can be a counterproposal of conventional methods using LPF.

  • This paper presents the analysis of series active power filter for reactive power compensation, load balancing, harmonic elimination, and neutral current eradication in three-phase four-wire power systems. Generally, the three-phase four-wire system is widely employed in distributing electric energy to several office building and manufacturing plants. In such systems, the third harmonic and its 3rd harmonics are termed as triple and zero sequence components that do not cancel each other in the system neutral. Consequently, the triple harmonics add together creating a primary source of excessive neutral current. Regarding this concern, this paper presents a new control algorithm for a series hybrid active system, whereas the control approach it adopts directly influence its compensation characteristics. Hence, the advantage of this control algorithm is the direct extraction of compensation voltage reference without phase transformations and multiplying harmonic current value by gain and the required rating of the series active filter is much smaller than that of a conventional shunt active power filter. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm, experiments have been carried out.

  • DSTATCOM(distribution static compensator) is one of the custom power devices, and protects a distribution line from unbalanced and harmonic current caused by non-linear and unbalanced loads. Researches about DSTATCOM are mainly divided two parts, one is the calculation of compensation current and the other part is the current control. Conventional researches use a LPF(low pass filter) to eliminate ripple component at the calculation of compensation current. But this method has a problem that LPF's characteristics restrict the compensation performance of instantaneous active and reactive power. This paper proposes a calculation of compensation current using state observer that can be a counterproposal of conventional methods using LPF. Improved performance of instantaneous active and reactive power compensation was shown by experiments.

  • Capacitor is basically used for the power-factor compensation and sometimes as the passive filter to reduce harmonics of nonlinear load. Since the impedance of capacitor is inversely proportional to the frequency. The harmonic current may result in the problems of voltage distortion and resonance. Capacitor has easily fall under by two harmonic components, a nonlinear load and a distorted utility voltage. The amplified harmonic current and voltage may damage power capacitor. Hence the pre-investigation of harmonic is needed before designing and application the power factor for reducing fault rate. In this paper, we analyzed that voltage and current with harmonics components act on the capacitor under the resonance condition. we concluded that both voltage and current harmonics have an bad effect on the capacitor and current harmonics is a bitter rather than effect by voltage harmonics.
