  • This paper studies modeling of Jeju 80kV HVDC system and its controller by using PSCAD/EMTDC program. Reduced ac network is applied to verify interaction between ac network and dc system. Design parameter is applied to the converter transformer, harmonic filter and dc transmisstion line to simulate dc system. HVDC controller is divided into a rectifier controller and a inverter controller according to the converter operating mode. The inverter controller is composed of current control, voltage control and extingtion angle control. The rectifier controller is composed of current control and voltage control. Both controller has VDCOL characteristics so that current order is dependant on voltage variation. Step response, ac network single phase fault, three phase fault is simulated to verify the dynamic performance of controller model in both transient state and steady state.

  • This study aimed to develop an approach to accurately predict the wind models and wind effects of large wind turbines. The wind-induced vibration characteristics of a 5 MW tower-blade coupled wind turbine system have been investigated in this paper. First, the blade-tower integration model was established, which included blades, nacelle, tower and the base of the wind turbine system. The harmonic superposition method and modified blade element momentum theory were then applied to simulate the fluctuating wind field for the rotor blades and tower. Finally, wind-induced responses and equivalent static wind loads (ESWL) of the system were studied based on the modified consistent coupling method, which took into account coupling effects of resonant modes, cross terms of resonant and background responses. Furthermore, useful suggestions were proposed to instruct the wind resistance design of large wind turbines. Based on obtained results, it is shown from the obtained results that wind-induced responses and ESWL were characterized with complicated modal responses, multi-mode coupling effects, and multiple equivalent objectives. Compared with the background component, the resonant component made more contribution to wind-induced responses and equivalent static wind loads at the middle-upper part of the tower and blades, and cross terms between background and resonant components affected the total fluctuation responses, while the background responses were similar with the resonant responses at the bottom of tower.

  • Since the power capacity needed for the propulsion of large ships is very large, a multiphase AC induction propulsion mode is generally adopted to meet the higher requirements of reliability, redundancy and maintainability. This paper gives a detailed description of the development of a 20MW fifteen-phase PWM driver for advanced fifteen-phase propulsion induction motors with a special third-harmonic injection in terms of the main circuit hardware, control system design, experiments, etc. The adoption of the modular design method for the main circuit hardware design can make the enclosed mechanical structure simple and maintainable. It can also avoid the larger switch stresses caused by the multiple turn on of the IGBTs in conventional large-capacity converter systems. The use of the distributed controller design method based on a high-speed fiber-optic ring net for the control system can overcome such disadvantages as the poor reliability and long maintenance times arising from the conventional centralized controller which is designed according to point-to-point communication. Finally, the performance of the 20MW PWM driver is verified by experimentation on a new fifteen-phase induction propulsion motor.

  • In order to evaluate the characteristics of solid-solid contact interfaces, reflection or transmission techniques involving normal-incidence longitudinal waves are generally used. However, these normal-incidence techniques are of limited use in field applications such as in the inspection of welded parts. The oblique-incidence ultrasonic technique may be an alternative for overcoming these problems. However, in this technique, the mode conversion at the contact interfaces should be taken into account along with the normal and tangential interface stiffness. In this study, we have suggested a theoretical model for obliqueincidence ultrasonic waves at the contact interfaces and analyzed their reflection and transmission characteristics. Experimental results showed that the measured reflection coefficient and second harmonic wave agreed well with the suggested theoretical model. Consequently, the oblique-incidence technique can be a promising method for evaluating the characteristics of the contact interfaces.

  • As the demand for high speed and high precision increases in the field of machine tool, interest in stiffness and vibration of machine tool is increasing. However, it takes a lot of time to develop a detailed design of machine tool based on experience, and it is difficult to design appropriately. Recently, structural optimization using FEM are increasingly used in machine tool design. But, it is difficult to optimize in consideration of the vibration state of the structure since optimization through stress distribution of a structure is mainly used, In this paper, Static structural analysis, mode analysis, and harmonic analysis using FEM were conducted to optimize the head structure that has the most influence on machining in a 5-axis machine tool. It is proposed a topology optimization analysis method that considers both static stiffness and dynamic stiffness using objective function design.

  • In this study, the optimal driving frequency was derived through finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize the developed piezoelectric ultrasonic medical devices(PUMD) for bone surgery. The core of the PUMD is the piezoelectric ceramic (PZT), which is a vibrator that generates vibration energy. The piezoelectric ceramic shows the maximum current value with respect to the input voltage at the resonance frequency, which generates the maximum mechanical vibration. In the past, various studies have been conducted related to the analysis of PUMD, but most of the research so far has been limited to free vibration analysis. However, in order to derive the accurate resonant frequency, the initial stress generated by bolt tightening in the bolt-clamped Langevin type transducer (BLT) must be considered. In this study, after designing a PUMD, the driving performance according to the bolt tightening value was analyzed through FEA, and this was experimentally verified. First, the resonance mode and frequency response were confirmed through modal and harmonic analysis at 20-40 kHz, which is known as the optimal driving frequency band of PUMD for bone surgery. In addition, the design of the PUMD was confirmed by checking the mechanical behavior of the tip and the piezoelectric ceramic at the resonant frequency. Consequentially, the characteristic evaluation was performed, and it was confirmed that the resonant frequency result derived through the FEA was reasonable. Through this study, we presented a more rational FEA method than before for BLT transducers. We expect that this will shorten the time and cost of developing a PUMD, and will enable the development of more stable and high-quality products.

  • Recently, a lot of research has been done on the analysis of axial vibrations of homogeneous and FG nanotubes (nanorods) with various aspects of vibrations that have been fully mentioned in history. However, there is a lack of investigation of the dynamic internal resonances of FG nanotubes (nanorods) between them. This is one of the essential or substantial characteristics of nonlinear vibration systems that have many applications in various fields of engineering (making actuators, sensors, etc.) and medicine (improving the course of diseases such as cancers, etc.). For this reason, in this study, for the first time, the dynamic internal resonances of FG nanorods in the simultaneous presence of large-amplitude size dependent behaviour, inertial and shear effects are investigated for general state in detail. Such theoretical patterns permit as to carry out various numerical experiments, which is the key point in the expansion of advanced nano-devices in different sciences. This research presents an AFG novel nano resonator model based on the axial vibration of the elastic nanorod system in terms of derivation from large-amplitude size dependent internal modals interactions. The Hamilton's Principle is applied to achieve the basic equations in movement and boundary conditions, and a harmonic deferential quadrature method, and a multiple scale solution technique are employed to determine a semi-analytical solution. The interest of the current solution is seen in its specific procedure that useful for deriving general relationships of internal resonances of FG nanorods. The numerical results predicted by the presented formulation are compared with results already published in the literature to indicate the precision and efficiency of the used theory and method. The influences of gradient index, aspect ratio of FG nanorod, mode number, nonlinear effects, and nonlocal effects variations on the mechanical behavior of FG nanorods are examined and discussed in detail. Also, the inertial and shear traces on the formations of internal resonances of FG nanorods are studied, simultaneously. The obtained valid results of this research can be useful and practical as input data of experimental works and construction of devices related to axial vibrations of FG nanorods.

  • The railway signalling system plays an essential role in the safe and efficient train operation as serving control functions of train operation intervals and train routes. The reliability and safety of the system are very important because the failure of the railway signalling system can lead to train collision or derailment as well as train operation stop. Until now, in railway signalling system the conventional wayside signal mode has been used generally. There are, however, the risk of accidents such as human mistakes caused by that the driver identifies the signal lamp status and controls train speed with the naked eye. It is also necessary to refurbish the obsolete system. Thereby, It is being effective that the onboard signal mode has been recently introduced and applied in order to transmit the speed control information to train by using the computer and communication equipment. It is necessary to switch over the system in a way while providing passengers with an operation service to replace the obsolete signal system. In this paper, we verify the cases through trial assessment which are solved by the way of adding specific functionalities in the problems of interference among the procedure of switch-over processes and a serial of processes for system verification while a train is operated in the new system in parallel to the existing system.

  • Three-dimensional nonlinear sloshing effects due to tank motions are simulated by solving boundary value problem using the panel method based on boundary integral technique. While Shinkai used boundary elements on which source strengths vary linearly between nodes, the source of constant strength is distributed on each triangular panel in the present study. The source strength at each time step is determined by solving the Fredholm integral equation of the second kind obtained from Green's theorem. To avoid cumulative numerical errors as time elapses, Adam-Bashforth-Moulton method is employed. Numerical examples for the case of partially filled spherical tank on board oscillating in harmonic sway mode or pitch mode are solved. The elevation of the free surface is compared with the result by Shinkai and confirmed in good agreement during early time. The input and the output energy are comparatively evaluated to check the overall accuracy of the present numerical scheme. Although some leakage of energy are found as time marches, it is plausible when we take into account nonlinearities of the problem and the number of panels of the model.

  • The characteristics of the Asian summer monsoon have been investigated for the periods of 1993/1994, the contrasting years in a view of the summer monsoon precipitation. In order to investigate the monsoon features over the eastern Asian monsoon region, the cloudiness(using the extensive data derived by the geostationary meteorological satellite), the condition of underlying surface including sea-surface temperature, and the summer rainfall are analyzed and some comparisons with 1993 and 1994 are also made and the characteristic differences are discussed. An analysis of the 2-degree latitude-longitude gridded 5-day mean high cloud amount data shows the detailed movement and persistence of the convective activities. In order to describe the spatial and temporal structures of the intraseasonal oscillation for the movement and evolution of the monsoon cloud, the extended empirical orthogonal fnction analysis with the twenty-day window size is used for the each year. Also, in order to find out the periodicity of the equatorial convective cluster, Fourier harmonic analysis is applied to the each year. The most prevailing intraseasonal oscillations of high cloud amount are 61 day mode and 15day mode in the equatorial and the subtropical oceans. However it was found that the most prevailing modes over the equatorial western Pacific and Indian Ocean were different for each year, hence raising the possibillity that the contrasting monsoon presipitation may be more fundamentally related to the interaction of intraseasonal oscillations and seasonal variation of convective activities over the lower latitude ocean.
