  • Nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests were peformed to assess the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating on a commercially available thin-film magnetic recording disk. Surface topography and roughness of the disk was studied using atomic force microscopy. The hardness and elastic modulus data show a peak at an indentation depth equivalent to the thickness of carbon overcoat, indicating strong influence of the coatin $g_strate interaction and the coating surface roughness on the measurements. The variations of surface roughness data were analysed statistically based on the normal probability distribution theories and Weibull cumulative probability theories.es.

  • The troubles such as slipping, pinching and other behaviors in the service of cold rolling mills often induce thermal shock crack on the surface of work roll, and considerably reduce their service lives. In order to evaluate thermal shock resistibility we use thermal shock tester generating frictional heat caused by a rotating disc contacting with test specimens. Thermal shock produces two heat affected layers below the roll surface, one is rehardened layer and the other is succeeding tempered layer. The maximum depth of crack occurred in a thermal shocked area is a criterion for the thermal shock resistibility. This paper describes on the investigation to the influence of hardness and residual stress.

  • A measure for good products manufactured by grinding process is the surface roughness that is affected by a lot of operating parameters such as types of abrasive, grain size, bond material, wheel speed, table speed, depth of cut, hardness of workpiece and stiffness of grinding machine. In this study, an application of the design of experiments was tried for evaluating the effect of operating parameters on the surface roughness. The workpiece was a high speed tool steel(SKH51) and the surface grinding was conducted. In order to obtain the best surface roughness within constraints of the working range, the optimal grinding conditions were selected. The usefulness of this method was evaluated by the statistical strategy.

  • Some of the pressurized reactor pressure vessels used in many chemical plants are made of low alloy carbon steel plates internally clad with an austenitic stainless steel for improved anti-corrosion properties. In this study, metallurgic structure of the weld interface of A 387 Grade12Class1 low alloy carbon steel claded with A182-F321 austenitic stainless steel after thermal exposure simulation heat treatment was investigated to display a characteristic behavior of dissimilar metal weld interface with thermal exposure during service at high temperature and pressure. EPMA, STEM, vickers-hardness test were performed and the results were correlated with the microstructure. To estimate the depth of the carburized/decarburized bands quantitatively, a model for carbon diffusion was proposed. The validity of the proposed theoretical relationships was confirmed by the directly measured data from the welded parts failed during service.

  • High speed machining experiment on the inclined surfaces of hardened mold steel(STAVAX at hardness HRC 53) is carried out using the long-neck type ball endmill. Surface texture and roughness are compared fur various cutting conditions. Tool overhang length greatly affects the roughness of machined surface. It is found that, fur this type of long-neck endmill, the chip load should be carefully selected by reducing either the axial depth of cut or feedrate to avoid tool vibration. Feedrate adjustment is more appropriate method in terms of tool wear.

  • Titanium specially has high specific strength, excellent mechanical properties as fatigue strength and fracture ductility, good corrosion resistance, and therefore are broadly applied to the various fields. It is required the developmennt for the skills of wire-cut electrical discharge machining(WEDM), but the WEDMed surface was found to be worst due to the attached components of wire. Therefore precision maching method like lapping is necessary for getting high quilty surface. Roughness of lapped surface, surface hardness to each process depth and improved method of surface shape were stuided experimentally, by changing of grain size of diamond lap material and lapping pressure with constant speed in lapping process.

  • As mechanical components are miniaturized, the demand on micro die and mold is increasing. Micro mechanical components usually have high hardness and good conductivity. So micro electrical discharge machining (MEDM) is an effective way to machine those components. In micro cavity fabrication using MEDM, it is observed that the bottom surface of cavity is distorted. Electric charges tend to be concentrated at the sharp edge. At the center of the bottom surface, debris can not be drawn off easily. These two phenomena make the bottom surface of the electrode and workpiece distort. As machining depth increases, the distorted shape of electrode approaches hemisphere. This process is affected by capacitance and the size of electrode. By using a smaller electrode than the desired cavity size and appropriate tool movement, bottom shape distortion can be prevented.

  • Fracture, fatigue and wear characteristics of Al-Si alloy used for compressor are experimentally studied. Plane strain fracture toughness test is carried out using three point bending specimen. Fatigue test is performed under constant loading condition and wear test is carried out as a function of sliding velocity and applied load. To obtain the crack propagation characteristics and wear mechanism of Al-Si alloy, fracture and worn surfaces are investigated using SEM. It is verified that fracture and fatigue strength of Al-Si alloy are improved by the fine microstructure of alloy. The wear behavior and specific wear amount of Al-Si alloy are not dependent on the microstructure but on a function of the silicon content. Anodizing on the surface of Al-Si alloy, surface hardness and wear characteristics are improved.

  • Tungsten carbide microshaft is used as various micro-tools in MEMS because it has high hardness and good rigidity. In this study, experiments were performed to produce tungsten carbide microshaft using electrochemical machining. $H_2SO_4$solution was used as electrolyte because it can dissolve tungsten and cobalt simultaneously. Optimal electrolyte concentration and machining voltage satisfying uniform shape and large MRR of workpiece were found. For one-step machining, the immersion depth over 1 mm was selected for avoidance of concentration of electric charge at the tip of the microshaft. The limit diameter with good straightness was shown and an empirical formula for WC-microshaft machining was suggested. By controlling the various machining parameters, a straight microshaft with 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter, over 1 mm length and under 0.5$^{\circ}$ taper angle was obtained.

  • In an attempt to optimize friction spot joining process of Mg alloys, effects of joining parameters such as rotating speed, plunging depth, and dwelling time on the joints properties were evaluated. Experimental tests were carried out for lap joined AZ31B-H24 sheets. A wide range of joining conditions could be applied to join Mg alloys without defects in the weld zone except for certain welding conditions with an insufficient heat input. The microstructures and hardness variations in the weld regions are discussed. For sound joints without defects, tensile shear strength of weld joints was higher approximately 116% than typical tensile shear strength of electrical resistance spot-welded joints for magnesium(Welding handbook, Vol 3, AWS).
