Statement of problem: For a long time, many of denture base acrylic resins have been used for edentulous and partial edentulous patients because of easy manipulation and good mechanical properties, but its esthetic aspect has not been commented enough. Denture base acrylic resins also has caused esthetic problems due to discoloration or staining as in esthetic restoration. Many researches and reports have treated the problems and accomplished esthetic improvement. But these researches and reports dealt with general food colors or beverages, not with fermented foods. Purpose: This study is designed to assess what fermented foods, such as soy sauce, gochujang, and toenjang that many of Koreans have taken in, influence on the color and hardness variation of denture base acrylic resins. Materials and methods: For the procedure, twelve disks per 4 denture base acrylic resins were fabricated with a thickness of 2mm and 16mm in diameter. Each seven specimen were measured for discoloration with spectrophotometer, while the others, five specimen, for surface hardness change with Barcol hardness tester, over time. Each 12 specimen were immersed into the 4 beakers of fermented foods(soy sauces, gochujangs, toenjangs, deionized water), and $L^{*},a^{*}$, and $b^*$ values were measured for the color difference$({\Delta}E^*)$, on the 1st, 7th, and 28th day with spectrophotometer, with the measurement of surface hardness change. Each data observed was processed statistically. Results: The findings are as follows; Discoloration 1. All of denture base resins was not influenced by the kind of fermented foods, except for $QC20^{(R)}$ 2. Soy sauce and red pepper paste caused more change for denture base resins than deionized water and soy bean paste, except for Perform$^{(R)}$ 3. Most significant change was shown in Lucitone 199$^{(R)}$, whereas Perform$^{(R)}$ results in the least change for all immersed solution, with no statistical significance. Hardness change 1. Barcol hardness values in deposited specimens have been changed low degree, but with significant statistical change according to the kind of food and duration. 2. Lucitone$^{(R)}$ 199 as significantly lower Barcol hardness value than others do. Conclusion: Based on the above results, it suggests that the habitual intake of fermented foods is not helpful for the color stability of denture base acrylic resins because Soy sauce and red pepper paste mainly caused discoloration and surface hardness change. Particularly $Lucitone199^{(R)}$ shows specific discoloration and low surface hardness values. Therefore, it is recommended giving caution patients with denture of $Lucitone199^{(R)}$ especially against the habitual intake of fermented foods like soy sauce and red pepper paste.

Interrupted creep tests for investigating the structural degradation during creep were conducted for a Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel in the range of stress from 71 to 167 MPa and temperature from 873 to 923 K. The change of hardness and tempered martensitic lath width was measured in grip and gauge parts of interrupted creep specimens. The lath structure was thermally stable in static conditions. However, it was not stable during creep, and the structural change was enhanced by creep strain. The relation between the change in lath width and creep strain was described quantitatively. The change in Vickers hardness was expressed by a single valued function of creep LCR(life consumption ratio). Based on the empirical relation between strain and lath width, a model was proposed to describe the relation between change in hardness and creep LCR. The comparison of the model with the empirical relation suggests that about 65% of hardness loss is due to the decrease of dislocation density accompanied by the movement of lath boundaries. The role of precipitates on subboundaries was discussed in connection with the abnormal subgrain growth appearing in low stress regime.
The effect of ice-quenching after degassing on the hardness change during simulated porcelain firing in a metal-ceramic Pd-Au-Ag alloy was investigated by means of hardness test, field emission scanning electron microscopic observations, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The hardness decreased by ice-quenching after degassing, which was induced by the homogenization of the ice-quenched specimen. The decreased hardness by ice-quenching after degassing was recovered from the 1st opaque stage which was the first stage of the remaining firing process for bonding porcelain. The microstructural change showed that the increase in hardness during the remaining firing process was caused by precipitation. The ice-quenching after degassing did not affect the hardness change during the subsequent porcelain firing process.
The friction surfaces of mechanical parts are heat-treated or coated with hard materials to minimize wear. Increasing the hardness is a very useful way to reduce abrasive wear. The general Brinell hardness test, which is widely used for metallic materials, is not suitable because it hardly shows any change in hardness when coated with thin films. In this study, we propose a basis for the application of the new Brinell hardness test method to the coated friction surface. An indentation analysis of the rigid sphere and elastic-perfectly plastic materials is performed using a commercial finite element analysis software. The results indicate that their loadto-diameter ratio is the same; the Brinell hardness test method can be applied even when the indenter diameter is on the micrometer scale. In the case of hard coating, it is difficult to calculate Brinell hardness using the diameter of the indentation, but the study revealed, for the first time, that it can be calculated using the depth of the indentation regardless of coating. The change in hardness owing to thin film coating over a wide load range implies that the hardness evaluation method is appropriate. Additional studies on various properties related to the substrate and coating material are required to apply the proposed method.
Interrupted creep tests were carried out on the Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel in order to investigate the structural degradation during creep. The ranges of creep stress and temperature were from 71 to 167MPa and 873 to 923k, respectively. The change of hardness and tempered martensitic lath width were measured in the grip and gauge parts of interrupted specimens. The lath structure was thermally stable in static conditions, but was not stable during creep, and the structural evolution was enhanced by creep strain. The relation between the change in lath width and strain was described in the from, $\delta$W= a ($W_s-W_o$)$cdot;varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon$ is the strain, $W_o$is the initial lath width, $W_s$ is the final lath width depending solely on stress, and a is the constant of the magnitude of 0.67 $\mu$m /strain. The change in Victors hardness was expressed by a one-valued function of creep life consumption ratio. Based on the empirical relation between strain and lath width, a model was proposed to explain the relation between change in hardness and creep life consumption ratio. The model revealed that about 65$%$ of dislocations in lath structures were eliminated by the migration of subboundaries.
In this paper, a change of fracture toughness and hardness in PZT-PYW ceramics system before and after poling treatment was measured to investigate the effect of composition on the mechanical properties in PZT-PYW ceramics. The hardness of the PZT-PYW ceramics increased with increasing mole fraction of PYW. The fracture toughness achieved maximum values for x=0.03. Both of the hardness and the fracture toughness also increased with poling treatment. The variation of both hardness and fracture toughness with increasing PYW mole fracture was explained by the change in microstructures such as grain size and second phase. The difference in hardness and fracture toughness in the electrically poled and unpoled specimens was also explained on the bases of internal stress.
The change of the hardness and yield strength depending upon the electrolysis conditions was investigated for Watts and bright nickel electrodeposits. The hardness of Watts nickel electrodeposits decreased with increasing current density in the range of 1-15A/Am2, while it increased with increasing bath temperature. The hardness of bright nickel deposits increased noticebly in comparison with that of Watts nickel electro-deposits. The hardness and the yield strength of the bright nickel electrodeposits increased considerably with decreasing current density and the highest value was obtained at the lowest current density (1A/dm2), while they decreased noticebly at the bath temperature of 80$^{\circ}C$ in comparison with that of 40-60$^{\circ}C$. The change of the hardness and the yield strength of bright nickel electrodeposits depending upon the electrolysis conditions could be mainly attributed to the variation of organic additives codeposited in the electrodeposits. The recrystallizatioin temperature(50% softening temperature) of the Wattss and the bright nickel electro-deposits was 520-280$^{\circ}C$ and 350-410$^{\circ}C$ respectively and then the recystallization temperature of bright nickel deposits was lower than that of the Watts nickel electrodeposits.
An adequate and homogeneous cure of light-activated restroative material is very important for improvement of marginal adaptation and prevention of marginal leakage, secondary caries and pulpal irritation as well as expressing natural physical property of that material. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of surface hardness and cure uniformity of light-activated glass ionomer cements. Restorative(Fuji II LC, Vitremer) and lining(Baseline VLC, Vitrebond) light-activated glass ionomer cements were investigated for this study. The surface hardness of the top and bottom surfaces and cure uniformity of each 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm & 3mm in the thickness of specimen were measured immediately, at 1 hour, 24 hours and 1 week after light activation. The surface hardness change and cure uniformity of all the specimens were measured by Knoop hardness tester. The results were as follows. 1. The surface hardness of top and bottom surfaces in all groups increased with time(p<0.01). 2. Both top and bottom surfaces hardness of Vitrebond group measured immediately after light-activation were significantly lower than those of the other groups(p<0.01). 3. The surface hardness of top and bottom surfaces of restorative light -activated glass ionomer cements was higher than those of lining materials at 1 week(p<0.10). 4. Surface hardness of Vitremer group decreased as the specimen thickness increased, except top and bottom surfaces hardness of the specimen at 1 week(p<0.01). There was no significant difference in the surface hardness of Fuji II LC with changes in the thickness except bottom surface hardness of specimen at 24 hours and 1 week (p>0.05). 5. Surface hardness of Vitrebond group significantly decreased as the specimen thickness increased(p<0.01). There was no significant difference in the surface hardness of Baseline VLC group with changes in the thickness except bottom surface hardness of specimen measured immediately after light -activation(p>0.05). 6. The hardness ratio of top against bottom surface in all groups decreased with time(p<0.05). 7. There was no significant difference in the hardness ratio of top against bottom surface with changes of the thickness except Vitrebond group, 24 hours and 1 week of Vitremer group and 1 week of Baseline VLC group (p>0.05). These results suggest that surface hardness of restorative ligh-activated glass ionomer cements were highter than those of lining light-activated materials. In all groups, the surface hardness and cure uniformity continuously increased with time.
The relationship between temperature and apparent logarithmic hardness of ointments were clearly demonstrated. The followings were obtained as the results: 1. When the ointment base was mixed with additives and heated or cooled at various temperatures, the apparent logarithmic hardness in the first trend before reaching the critical point is subject to change mainly by the contents of the additive while in the secondary trend after reaching the critical point is subject to change mainly by the temperature. 2. No Change in the critical point was observed at different temperatures. It is assumed that the crittical point of such ointment bases has no relationship with temperatures and that the critical point itself should rather depend on the physicochemical properties of the additives.
Partial-hardened hot stamping has been well known to be very effective to absorb more energy in automotive lateral crash. Hardness distribution and dimensional change after partial-hardened hot stamping have been studied to find out effect of thermal deformation of the heated hot stamping die on dimensional accuracy of automotive center pillar. Soft zone of commercial center pillar showed 275~345 in Vickers hardness, indicating bigger non-uniformity which resulted from thermal deformation of heated die. Dimensional changes in soft zone of the commercial center pillar measured by three dimensional scanner were much bigger than that in hard zone. It has been found that hot stamping die compensation considering thermal deformation in soft zone causes a significant decrease in hardness deviation in the soft zone, corresponding to 20 percent of commercial center pillar and subsequently leads to much higher dimensional accuracy.
