Continuous indentation test is a very powerful method to monitor the materials reliability since it is very simple, easy and almost non-destructive. It can provide material properties such as elastic modulus, yield strength, work-hardening exponent, etc., than the conventional hardness test. In our study, the true stress-strain curve is derived from the indentation load-depth curve. For this, average indentation strain is defined and the flow stress is obtained from the analysis of the indentation stress field. The residual stress is analyzed from the variation of the indentation behavior with the applied residual stress. And the estimation of fracture characteristic is tried by considering the conventional fracture toughness modeling and the stress/strain state under the spherical indenter.
The general way to process the surface by means of the laser was heat treatment for strengthening the surface hardness. They have used the laser for changing the property of the surface, especially for metal. Generally, it is recent increasing tendency to use the thin plate panel for making things smaller and lightweight. However, thin plate should be strengthened or let the thin plate panel have moment of inertia by means of engraving the groove or wave on them for lightweight and strengthening. Therefore it is expected that the thin plate panel can be harder and more stable through processing the metal surface by laser beam irradiation and the hardness of thin plate possibly can be also changed how many parts of them are harden. Through this research, it can be grasped how the hardness and mechanical characteristic changes according to width and depth of groove by laser affect the max stress by the ratio of $A_H/A_T$ (hardening area/total area) and characteristic of displacement and structural characteristic for making the thin plate harder by the strengthening metal surface of thin plate by laser through the experiment and analysis of FEA can be presented.
The economic loss arisen from the abrasion wear have been increasing at every industrial field. To reduce the economic loss we developed a new process, which is named MAHa process(Metallic Adhesives for HArdening). MAHa process is a process to weld tungsten carbide(WC) to the surface of a plain carbon steel so that it may stay longer under the severe abrasive environment. The depth of the WC layer ranges from 0.5 mm to 5 m. Compared with the conventional technology, arc-augmented welding which bonds WC on the flat surface only, MAHa process has the merits that it can make a robust WC layer on the round or wave- shaped surface also. How to turn the WC powder into a flexible mat is the key technology of the MAHa process. We invented new polymer materials to accomplish such a goal and both the MAHa process and the invented materials were applied for patents. For the application, the inner wall of elbow of Concrete Pump Truck(CPT) was maharized(MAHa process-treated) and the new WC layer on the inner wall was made successfully. The elbow was equipped to a CPT.
Surface alloying of Ti alloy by $CO_2$ laser is able to produce few hundred micrometers thick TiN or TiC surface-alloyed layer with high hardness on the substrate by injecting reaction gas($N_2$ or $CH_4$). Laser surface alloying by means of process control is in many applications essential in order to obtain predictable hardening layer. This research has been investigated the effect of such parameters on TiN and TiC gas alloying of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by $CO_2$ laser. The maximum surface hardness of TiN layer was obtained 1750Hv on the conditions of 0.8kW laser power, 0.8m/min scanning speed and 100% $N_2$ atmosphere. However, the maximum hardness of TiC formation layer after laser treatment was about 630Hv. As scanning speed was increased, the hardness and depth of these layers were decreased at constant laser power.
Elastic and plastic deformation behaviors of the high purity aluminum and the silica glass were studied using nanoindentation and finite element analysis(FEA) techniques. Berkovich- and cone-type indenters were used for the nanoindentation test. Deformation behaviors and nanoindent profiles of elastic, elastic-plastic or plastic materials were clearly visualized by FEA simulation. Effects of the penetration depth and strain hardening on the deformation behavior were examined. Pile-up and sink-in behaviors were studied by using FEA technique. Degree of pile-up or sink-in was found to be a function of the ratio of elastic modulus to yield strength of materials. FEA was found to be an effective method to study deformation behaviors of materials under nanoindentation, especially in the case when pile-up or sink-in phenomena occurred.
In order to investigate the accuracy and applicability of steel equivalent constitutive model, the calculated results were compared with typical tests of steel frames under static and dynamic loading patterns firstly. Secondly, four widely used models for time history analysis of steel frames were compared to discuss the applicability and efficiency of different methods, including shell element model, multi-scale model, equivalent constitutive model (ECM) and traditional beam element model (especially bilinear model). Four-story steel frame models of above-mentioned finite element methods were established. The structural deformation, failure modes and the computational efficiency of different models were compared. Finally, the equivalent constitutive model was applied in seismic incremental dynamic analysis of a ten-floor steel frame and compared with the cyclic hardening model without considering damage and degradation. Meanwhile, the effects of damage and degradation on the seismic performance of steel frame were discussed in depth. The analysis results showed that: damages would lead to larger deformations. Therefore, when the calculated results of steel structures subjected to rare earthquake without considering damage were close to the collapse limit, the actual story drift of structure might already exceed the limit, leading to a certain security risk. ECM could simulate the damage and degradation behaviors of steel structures more accurately, and improve the calculation accuracy of traditional beam element model with acceptable computational efficiency.
The stress-strain relation of aluminum (Al) alloy foam cell wall was evaluated by the instrumented sharp indentation method. The indentation in a few micron ranges was performed on the cell wall of Al-alloy foam having a composition or Al-3wt.%Si-2wt.%Cu-2wt.%Mg as well as its precursor (material prior to foaming). To extract the stress-stram relation in terms of yield stress ${\sigma}_y$, strain hardening exponent n and elastic modulus E, the closed-form dimensionless relationships between load-indentation depth curve and elasto-plastic property were used. The tensile properties of precursor material of Al-alloy foam were also measured independently by uni-axial tensile test. In order to verify the validity of the extracted stress-strain relation, it was compared with the results of tensile test and finite element (FE) analysis. A modified cubic-spherical lattice model was proposed to analyze the compressive behavior of the Al-alloy foam. The material parameters extracted by the instrumented nanoindentation method allowed the model to predict the compressive behavior of the Al-alloy foam accurately.
In this paper, constraint-based fracture mechanics analyses of hollow cylinders with internal circumferential crack under tensile loading are conducted. Finite element analyses of the cracked cylinders are carried out to determine the fracture parameters including elastic T-stresses, and fully-plastic J-integrals. Linear elastic finite element analysis is conducted to obtain the T-stresses, and elastic-plastic analysis is conducted to obtain the fully plastic J-integrals. A wide range of cylinder geometries are studied, with cylinder radius ratios of $r_i/r_o$ = 0.2 to 0.8 and crack depth ratio a/t = 0.2 to 0.8. Fully plastic J-integrals are obtained for Ramberg-Osgood power law hardening material of n = 3, 5 and 10. These fracture parameters are then used to construct conventional and constraint-based failure assessment diagrams (FADs) to determine the maximum load carrying capacity of cracked cylinders. It is demonstrated that these tensile loaded cylinders with circumferential cracks are under low constraint conditions, and the load carrying capacity are higher when the low constraint effects are properly accounted for, using constraint-based FADs, comparing to the predictions from the conventional FADs.

For ease of use and access, web browsers are now being used to access and modify sensitive data and systems including critical control systems. Due to their computational capabilities and network connectivity, browsers are vulnerable to several types of attacks, even when fully updated. Browsers are also the main target of phishing attacks. Many browser attacks, including phishing, could be prevented or mitigated by using site-, user-, and device-specific security configurations. However, we discovered that all major browsers expose disparate security configuration procedures, option names, values, and semantics. This results in an extremely hard to secure web browsing ecosystem. We analyzed more than a 1000 browser security configuration options in three major browsers and found that only 13 configuration options had syntactic and semantic similarity, while 4 configuration options had semantic similarity, but not syntactic similarity. We: a) describe the results of our in-depth analysis of browser security configuration options; b) demonstrate the complexity of policy-based configuration of web browsers; c) describe a knowledge-based solution that would enable organizations to implement highly-granular and policy-level secure configurations for their information and operational technology browsing infrastructures at the enterprise scale; and d) argue for necessity of developing a common language and semantics for web browser configurations.
