The purpose of this study was to measure the surface tension of hard water through electro-magnetic field for investigating the effect of electro-magnetic water treatment. The maximum reduction of surface tension was 8% comparing to the no treatment case. When the flow velocity through the permanent magnetic device (PMD) was 6.3 m/s, sample of hard water had the minimum surface tension.

The crops showing hard seed character have high seed viability after seed storage for long period. The low germination rate due to hard seed coat, however, cause a problem of low seedling establishment in field condition. Three legumes used in the experiment, lablab bean (Dolichos lablab L.), asparagus bean (Vigna sesquipedalis L. Fruwirth), and soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.), showed low germination rate (26, 17, and 5%, respectively) due to thick and hard seed coat. In this study artificial treatment for breaking dormancy was tested in hard seeds. The effect of proper treatment was various depending on species. The germination rate of lablab bean was highly improved up to 94% by soaking into water for 24 hours. In the case of asparagus bean, the rate was increased up to 90% by soaking for eight hours near boiling water until it cools. The germination rate of small hard seed soybean was increase to 96% by soaking into concentrated sulfuric acid for 10 minutes. Ultrastructural change revealed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) reflects that the structure of micropyle was changed and water uptake was facilitated with all treatments tested in the experiment. Especially, sulfuric acid treatment resulted in the degradation of micropylar tissue. These results demonstrate that the artificial treatment including sulfuric acid and (hot) water soaking treatment for promoting water uptake can be applied to improve seed germination in legume seed with thick and hard seed coat.
One macroscopic effect in the free-running Er:YAG laser is an accumulation of microscopic effects. Understanding of the exogenous water induced mechanical effect on the dental hard tissue by the Qswitched Er:YAG laser has an important impact on the further understanding of the free-running Er:YAG laser ablation on the dental hard tissue. The Q-switched Er:YAG laser (1-$\mu$s-long pulse width) was used in the recoil pressure measurement with an aid of water-jet system and a pressure transducer. The amplitude of the recoil pressure depends on the tooth surface conditions (dry and wet) and the volume of the water upon it. Wet surfaces yielded higher recoil pressure than that of dry, surface, and as the volume of the exogenous water drop increased, the amplitude of the recoil pressure increased also.

This study was performed to understand the exogenous-water-drop induced thermomechanical effect on the tooth in the free-running Er:YAG laser mode for the proper use of water as a laser energy absorber and coolant in dentistry. The ree-running Er:YAG laser was used in the dental hard tissue ablation study. A Microjet system was employed to dispense precise water drops. Ablation rate, recoil momentum, and temperature rise in the pulp cavity were measured with and without an exogenous water drop on the tooth surface. Exogenous water enhanced ablation rate in the thick tooth in which the ablation rate on the dry surface does not increase linearly but shows plateau. Optimal exogenous water volume was shifted from 2 nl to 4 nl as the laser energy was increased from 48 mJ to 145 mJ. The magnitude of the recoil momentum was increased as the volume of exogenous water increased. The results of this study suggest that we must pay attention to the recoil momentum or recoil pressure study or the optimal and safe usage of water in the dental treatment because these mechanical effects depend on the volume of exogenous water on the tooth surface.
The applications of water jet cutting (WJC) in coal mine have progressed slowly. In this paper, we analyzed the possibility and reasonableness of WJC application to pressure relief in hard coal seam, simulated the distributive characteristics of stress and energy fields suffered by hard coal roadway wallrock and the internal relationships of the fields to the instability due to WJC (including horizontal radial slot and vertical annular slot) on roadway wallrock. The results showed that: (1) WJC can unload hard coal seam effectively by inducing stress release and energy dissipation in coal mass near its slots; its annular slots also can block or weaken stress and energy transfer in coal mass; (2) the two slots may cause "the beam structure" and "the small pillar skeleton", and "the layered energy reservoir structure", respectively, which lead to the increase in stress concentration and energy accumulation in coal element mass near the slots; (3) the reasonable design and optimization of slots' positions and their combination not only can significantly reduce the scope of stress concentration and energy accumulation, but also destroy coal mass structure on a larger scale to force stress to transfer deeper coal mass.
For the effective seedling production of the hard shelled mussel, Mytilus coruscus, this study assessed the effects of the dietary value of live food, density, water temperature and salinity on growth and survival rate of the larvae. The optimal survival rate and growth rate were examined under differing conditions of water temperature, salinity, and rearing density for 30 days. The three groups were provided different feeding organisms, such as Isochrysis galbana and Teleaulax suecica. The mixtures were provided at a rate of $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$. The best growth was observed in the group with conditions $21^{\circ}C$ water temperature ($16.2{\pm}9.1{\mu}m$), 33 psu of salinity ($16.82{\pm}3.9{\mu}m$), $2500individual\;m^{-2}$ ($17.2{\pm}5.9{\mu}m$), and fed with $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture ($16.0{\pm}7.3{\mu}m$). The highest survival rate was found in the group at conditions $18^{\circ}C$ water temperature (66.4%), 33 psu of salinity (24.4%), $2500individual\;m^{-2}$ (65.8%), and fed with $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture (58.8%). We therefore conclude that the suitable culture conditions for the stable production of hard shelled mussel artificial seedlings was at 18 to $21^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 30 to 33 psu of salinity, 2500 to $5000individual\;m^{-2}$ of rearing density, and feeding supplement of $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture under semi running water system.

There are various ions in seawater. In order to use seawater as the drinking water, some elements are to be concentrated and other elements are to be removed. To obtain these characteristics using seawater, it is necessary to adjust seawater quality. Because calcium and magnesium are especially healthful to human bodies, it is required to concentrate these elements. In this study, the technology to obtain the hard water from seawater by electerodialysis was investigated. After concentrated water was produced using nanofiltration membranes, sodium chloride was eliminated from the concentrated water by electrodialysis. The hard water production from seawater was successfully achieved using electrodialysis in this study.
The physicochemical properties of the hydroxypropylated mung bean, sweet potato and water chestnut starches were studied. The blue value and amylose content of mung bean starch were higher than those of sweet potato and water chestnut. Pasting temperature of hydroxypropylated starches were lower than those of native starch and decreased with increasing contents of propylene oxide. Peak viscosity increased with the increase of degree of hydroxypropylation. With increasing contents of propylene oxide, the clarity and swelling power of all starches were increased and those of mung bean were higher. Mung bean starch produced better hard capsules than sweet potato and water chestnut starch. Hydroxypropylated (>6% propylene oxide) water chestnut starch-based capsules completely dissolved, but hydroxypropylated (>12% propylene oxide) mung bean and sweet potato starch-based capsules were dissolved within 10 min. These results showed that hydroxypropylated starch-based capsules have potentials for pharmaceutical applications as a substitute for gelatin hard capsules.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the dimensional changes of relined dentures with a light-curing resin, a heat-curing resin, and a direct, hard reline resin. And also to measure the transverse strength, impact strength, surface hardness of the three resins used in relining. The surface textures of three resins also of evaluated by using scanning electron microscope. Through analyses on the data from this study, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. Impact strength of heat-curing resin was highest, and direct, hard reline resin higher, light-curing resin lowest. 2. Transverse strength of heat-curing resin was highest, and direct, hard reline resin and light-curing resin was lower and not signiicantly different. 3. Surface hardness of light-curing resin was lighest, heat-curing resin higher, and direct, hard reline resin was lowest. 4. After storage of the relined dentures for 1 day and 1 week in water at room temperature, linear shrinkage of distance between the reference points in the maxillary base relined with direct, hard reline resin was lowest, and those relined with light-curing resin and heat-curing resin were lower and were not significantly different. 5. After storage for 4 weeks in orator at room tempeature, linear shrinkage of distance between ridge crests of dentures relined with heat-curing resin was highest and that of distance between denture borders was not significantly different. 6. The dimensional changes of relined dentures during storage in water was not significant except those of distance between denture borders relined with light-curing resin at 1 day and 1 week storage in water. 7. At low magnification (x40) of SEM examination, the surface textures of three resins were similar except light-curing resin which had some defects. At high magnification (x200), the surface textures of hard, direct reline resin were smooth with little defects, but those of heat-curing resin and light-curing resin w ere irregular.

This paper aims at investigating the face stability of large-diameter underwater shield tunnels considering seepage in soft-hard uneven strata. Using the kinematic approach of limit upper-bound analysis, the analytical solution of limit supporting pressure on the tunnel face considering seepage was obtained based on a logarithmic spiral collapsed body in uneven strata. The stability analysis method of the excavation face with different soft- and hard-stratum ratios was explored and validated. Moreover, the effects of water level and burial depth on tunnel face stability were discussed. The results show the effect of seepage on the excavation face stability can be accounted as the seepage force on the excavation face and the seepage force of pore water in instability body. When the thickness ratio of hard soil layer within the excavation face exceeds 1/6D, the interface of the soft and hard soil layer can be placed at tunnel axis during stability analysis. The reliability of the analytical solution of the limit supporting pressure is validated by numerical method and literature methods. The increase of water level causes the instability of upper soft soil layer firstly due to the higher seepage force. With the rise of burial depth, the horizontal displacement of the upper soft soil decreases and the limit supporting pressure changes little because of soil arching effect.
