  • A radicular cyst is a slowly-growing epithelial sac lining a pathologic cavity in the bone at the apex of a tooth. Large radicular cyst revealed by radiographic examination almost always appear to involved several teeth. The author observed a 31 year old woman with a labial swelling and palatal mucosal expansion of the maxillary anterior region. Radiographic examination indicated that the lesion extended from the left maxillary lateral incisor to the right lateral incisor. Cyst consisted of tan to gray yellow slightly firm to partly hard plaque like tissue measuring 3.4 x 2.2 x 0.3㎝. The author has treated the cyst by means of enucleation with apicoecomies of the involved teeth except the right central incisor. Recovery proceed satisfactorily and there were no clinical or radiologic signs of recurrence 8 months later.

  • This paper examines the role of extensive reading in foreign language learning classrooms. The effects of extensive reading are shown both positive and negative as in Krashen (1999) and Spada (1997), particularly researches done in classroom setting. Extensive reading is hard to implement in foreign language classrooms due to the stringent school curricula despite its benefits in cognitive and affective domain of learners. This study searched 21 papers from research database on extensive reading researches in a classroom setting and synthesized 55 cognitive effects and 11 affective effects from these papers under investigation in a manner of quantifying their means and standard deviations to derive generalizations. Research synthesis in this manner has secured its own status of scientific investigation by providing secondary researchers with replicable methods that produce verifiable findings. The syntheses of researches show that extensive reading is effective in both literacy skills and other language skills such as listening and writing. It also shows positive effects across different age groups, but the effect sizes are different in that elementary and adults gained more positive effects than middle and high school students.

  • Debris flows are a natural hazard which looks like a combination of flood, land and rock slide. Large rainfall in July 2006 produced several large scale debris flows and many small debris flows that resulted in loss of life and considerable property and highway damage, as was widely reported in the national media. The hazard "debris flow" is still insufficiently researched Furthermore debris flows are very hard to predict. In this paper, a general over view of the debris flow problems along the highway, a generic way for the design and dimensioning of flexible barrier systems will be presented. A brief description of the various unique barrier types will be provided, too. The future for these barrier concepts looks promising because these barriers represent the state of art for such applications and are superior to many other available options.

  • I use a common educational spectrographic device (SV2100R) in order to obtain astronomical spectra after inventing a new adaptor for telescopes. Experimental classes and learning projects in schools and public outreach are well established regarding imaging and photometry observations. However, experiments using astronomical spectrographs are rather hard to find because the procedures of spectral extraction and wavelength calibration is less convenient. SV2100R is a 1D CCD array and thus has the advantage of not requiring spectral extraction. In addition, basic wavelength calibration is preformed by the the provided software. It was adapted to a 12-inch reflecting telescope in the Korea Science Academy of KAIST in Busan and a spectrum of the bright object, Arcturus, was successfully obtained. This means one can provide educational programs on the topic of astronomical spectra. A few suggested projects are presented.

  • If one can find a control Lyapunov function (CLF) for a given nonlinear system, the control input stabilizing the system can be easily obtained. To find a CLF, the time derivative of an energy function should be negative definite. This procedure frequently requires a control input which is a rational function or includes an inverse function. The control input is not defined on the specific state-space where the denominator of the rational function is equal to 0 or the inverse function does not exist. In this region with singularities, the trajectory of the control system cannot be generated, which is one of the most important reasons why it is hard to make the origin of a nonlinear system be globally asymptotically stable. In this paper, we propose a smooth control law ensuring the globally asymptotic stability by means of cancelling the singularity in the control input.

  • Satellite and aerial images are very useful means to monitor ecological and environmental situation. Nowadays more and more officials at Ministry of Environment in Korea need to access and use these image data through networks like internet or intranet. However it is very hard to manage and service these image data through internet or intranet, because of its size problem. In this paper very large image data service system for Ministry of Environment is constructed on web environment using image compression and web based image processing technology. Through this system, not only can officials in Ministry of Environment access and use all the image data but also can achieve several image processing effects on web environment. Moreover officials can retrieve attribute information from vector GIS data that are also integrated with the system.

  • Fuzzy modeling is generally using the given data and the fuzzy rules are established by the input variables and the space division by selecting the input variable and dividing the input space for each input variables. The premise part of the fuzzy rule is presented by selection of the input variables, the number of space division and membership functions and in this paper the consequent part of the fuzzy rule is identified by polynomial functions in the form of linear inference and modified quadratic. Parameter identification in the premise part devides input space Min-Max method using the minimum and maximum values of input data set and C-Means clustering algorithm forming input data into the hard clusters. The identification of the consequence parameters, namely polynomial coefficients, of each rule are carried out by the standard least square method. In this paper, membership function of the premise part is dividing input space by using trapezoid-type membership function and by using gas furnace process which is widely used in nonlinear process we evaluate the performance.

  • This investigation was designed to determine the effectiveness of the posterior occlusal schemes on masticatory activity during mastication in complete denture. Twelve edentulous subjects were selected for this study. All subjects had no past history and no functional abnormality on masticatory system and TMjoint. And, they had residual ridge of favorable morphology, firm mucosa and Class I skeletal jaw relationship, Twelve experimental denture with interchangeable occlusions(0-degree teeth, 30-degree teeth, Levin teeth and S-A teeth) were constructed for this study. The masticatory performance was analyzed by means of standard sieve(10, 16, 20, 30sieve), and the electrical activity from selected muscles(Temporalis and Masseter muscle) was recorded simultaneously with electromyography (Bio-Pak system) as the subject masticated test foods (rice, peanut and gum) with four different occlusal schemes. Mandibular movement was, also, measured with Sirognathography(Bio-Pak system). These recordings were performed in immediately, after 1 week and after 2 weeks of insertion of complete denture. The results were as fellows; 1. The average masticatory performance of 0-degree artificial teeth was higher than any other artificial teeth. 2. Masticatory performance in denture wearer was affected preferentially by food and artificial occlusal schemes. 3. During chewing, there was a statistical difference of EMG activity between masseter and temporal muscle(p<0.01). Especially, EMG activity of working masticatory muscle was highly affected by food rather than by artificial occlusal schemes. 4. In denture wearer, the velocity of opening was not affected by food, whereas, the velocity of closing was faster in soft food chewing than in hard food chewing, and the amount of vertical displacement was grater in chewing of soft and large bolus than in chewing of hard and small bolus. However, the amount of lateral displacement showed conversely(p<0.05). 5. It was considered that masticatory performance in denture wearer is not affected by the condition of residual ridge. the history of denture wear, the preference, the adaptation to artificial teeth and the total mesiodistal length of artificial posterior teeth.

  • We have investigated a novel optical decoder for a fiber-optic code division multiple access(CDMA) communication systems. The conventional optical encoder and decoder have the advantage of simple structure. However the number of users in the system is limited by the auto- and cross-correlation properties generated in decoding process. In previous studies, to improve the system performance, although they used an optical code that minimize the sidelobe and cross-correlation, could not yet find a novel methods for performance improvement in fiber-optic CDMA system. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the novel optical decode in order to improve the performance of system. In this paper, we schematize the AND gate logic element(AGLE) composed with 1$\times$2 or 1$\times$3 coupler and the optical thyristor and propose the novel optical decoder using K(weight) AGLE. The optical thyristor only passes the overlapped signal and clips other signals. Such a novel concept means that the optical thyristor can operate as a hard-limiter. We analyze the fiber-optic CDMA system using the novel optical decoder with simulation and is found that the novel optical decoder using the AGLE and optical thyristor excludes the sidelobe and cross-correlation intensity between any two sequences.

  • An opportunity for dental students to come into contact with individuals with disabilities is insufficient. Therefore, prejudice and negative attitudes towards persons with disabilities persist. Working under the assumption that educating dental students regarding people with disabilities will bring about positive awareness, we conducted this study. We investigated the changes in the recognition of the issues and needs of people with disabilities before and after special care dentistry class of students of dental college that will include an experience in a dental clinic with a disabled person. Seventy-two Kyung Hee University School of Dentistry third-year dental students attended the special care dentistry class in one semester and they took the same survey was before and after the class. In the questionnaire, we used the disability factor scale (DFS) that Siller has proposed. The authoritarian virtuousness factor getting lower to a significant level after receiving an education. This means that after the education, the respondents realize that how hard to adapt the disabilities. After receiving an education, the rejection of intimacy factor score significantly get higher than before they took the class. This means that after the training, positive attitudes towards those with disabilities were better than those towards the opposite sex. We were able to confirm a positive change in the recognition for persons with disabilities through the special care dentistry class. Our study shows that educating dental students on the how to take care of individuals with disabilities can bring about a positive change in the attitudes students may have regarding them.
