Curcumin Inhibits Human Non-small Cell Lung Cancer A549 Cell Proliferation Through Regulation of Bcl-2/Bax and Cytochrome C

  • We intended to study the mechanism of the inhibitory action of curcumin on human non-small cell lung cancer A549 cell. The cell growth was determined by CCK-8 assay, and the results indicated that curcumin inhibited the cell proliferation in a concentration dependent manner. And to further confirm the relative anti-cancer mechanism of curcumin, RT-PCR was carried out to analysis the expression of relative apoptotic proteins Bax, Bcl-2. We found that curcumin could up-regulate the expression of Bax but down-regulate the expression of Bcl-2 in A549 cells. In addition, curcumin affect the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. These results suggested that curcumin inhibited cancer cell growth through the regulation of Bcl-2/Bax and affect the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway.

Landing Dynamic and Key Parameter Estimations of a Landing Mechanism to Asteroid with Soft Surface

  • It is of great significance to utilize a landing mechanism to explore an asteroid. A landing mechanism named ALISE (Asteroid Landing and In Situ Exploring) for asteroid with soft surface is presented. The landing dynamic in the first turning stage, which represents the landing performance of the landing mechanism, is built by a Lagrange equation. Three key parameters can be found influencing the landing performance: the retro-rocket thrust T, damping element damping $c_1$, and cardan element damping $c_2$. In this paper, the retro-rocket thrust T is solved with considering that the landing mechanism has no overturning in extreme landing conditions. The damping element damping c1 is solved by a simplified dynamic model. After solving the parameters T and $c_1$, the cardan element damping $c_2$ is calculated using the landing dynamic model, which is built by Lagrange equation. The validities of these three key parameters are tested by simulation. The results show a stable landing, when landing with the three estimated parameters T, $c_1$, and $c_2$. Therefore, the landing dynamic model and methods to estimate key parameters are reasonable, and are useful for guiding the design of the landing mechanism.

A Novel Technique for Human Traffic based Radio Map Updating in Wi-Fi Indoor Positioning Systems

  • With the fast-developing of mobile terminals, positioning techniques based on fingerprinting method draws attention from many researchers even world famous companies. To conquer some shortcomings of the existing fingerprinting systems and further improve its performance, we propose a radio map building and updating technique, which is able to customize the spatial and temporal dependency of radio maps. The method includes indoor propagation and penetration modeling and the analysis of human traffic. Based on the combination of Ray-Tracing Algorithm, Finite-Different Time-Domain and Rough Set Theory, the approach of indoor propagation modeling accurately represents the spatial dependency of the radio map. In terms of temporal dependency, we specifically study the factor of moving people in the interest area. With measurement and statistics, the factor of human traffic is introduced as the temporal updating component. We improve our existing indoor positioning system with the proposed building and updating method, and compare the localization accuracy. The results show that the enhanced system can conquer the influence caused by moving people, and maintain the confidence probability stable during week, which enhance the actual availability and robustness of fingerprinting-based indoor positioning system.

Transport Protocols in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Survey

  • Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have emerged as a promising solution to enhance spectrum utilization by using unused or less used spectrum in radio environments. The basic idea of CRNs is to allow secondary users (SUs) access to licensed spectrum, under the condition that the interference perceived by the primary users (PUs) is minimal. In CRNs, the channel availability is uncertainty due to the existence of PUs, resulting in intermittent communication. Transmission control protocol (TCP) performance may significantly degrade in such conditions. To address the challenges, some transport protocols have been proposed for reliable transmission in CRNs. In this paper we survey the state-of-the-art transport protocols for CRNs. We firstly highlight the unique aspects of CRNs, and describe the challenges of transport protocols in terms of PU behavior, spectrum sensing, spectrum changing and TCP mechanism itself over CRNs. Then, we provide a summary and comparison of existing transport protocols for CRNs. Finally, we discuss several open issues and research challenges. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first survey on transport protocols for CRNs.

Damage detection for truss or frame structures using an axial strain flexibility

  • Damage detection using structural classical deflection flexibility has received considerable attention due to the unique features of the flexibility in the last two decades. However, for relatively complex structures, most methods based on classical deflection flexibility fail to locate damage sites to the exact members. In this study, for structures whose members are dominated by axial forces, such as truss structures, a more feasible flexibility for damage detection is proposed, which is called the Axial Strain (AS) flexibility. It is synthesized from measured modal frequencies and axial strain mode shapes which are expressed in terms of translational mode shapes. A damage indicator based on AS flexibility is proposed. In addition, how to integrate the AS flexibility into the Damage Location Vector (DLV) approach (Bernal and Gunes 2004) to improve its performance of damage localization is presented. The methods based on AS flexbility localize multiple damages to the exact members and they are suitable for the cases where the baseline data of the intact structure is not available. The proposed methods are demonstrated by numerical simulations of a 14-bay planar truss and a five-story steel frame and experiments on a five-story steel frame.

A numerical study on ice failure process and ice-ship interactions by Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

  • In this paper, a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is extended to simulate the ice failure process and ice-ship interactions. The softening elastoplastic model integrating Drucker-Prager yield criterion is embedded into the SPH method to simulate the failure progress of ice. To verify the accuracy of the proposed SPH method, two benchmarks are presented, which include the elastic vibration of a cantilever beam and three-point bending failure of the ice beam. The good agreement between the obtained numerical results and experimental data indicates that the presented SPH method can give the reliable and accurate results for simulating the ice failure progress. On this basis, the extended SPH method is employed to simulate level ice interacting with sloping structure and three-dimensional ice-ship interaction in level ice, and the numerical data is validated through comparing with experimental results of a 1:20 scaled Araon icebreaker model. It is shown the proposed SPH model can satisfactorily predict the ice breaking process and ice breaking resistance on ships in ice-ship interaction.

Novel Design and Research for a High-retaining-force, Bi-directional, Electromagnetic Valve Actuator with Double-layer Permanent Magnets

  • To increase the retaining force, a novel design for a concentric, bi-directional, electromagnetic valve actuator that contains double-layer permanent magnets is presented in this paper. To analyze the retaining-force change caused by the magnets, an equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) model is established, while the EMC circuit of a double-layer permanent-magnet valve actuator (DLMVA) is also designed. Based on a 3D finite element method (FEM), the calculation model is built for the optimization of the key DLMVA parameters, and the valve-actuator optimization results are adopted for the improvement of the DLMVA design. A prototype actuator is manufactured, and the corresponding test results show that the actuator satisfies the requirements of a high retaining force under a volume limitation; furthermore, the design of the permanent magnets in the DLMVA allow for the attainment of both a high initial output force and a retaining force of more than 100 N.

Reconfiguring Second-order Dynamic Systems via P-D Feedback Eigenstructure Assignment: A Parametric Method

  • The design of reconfiguring a class of second-order dynamic systems via proportional plus derivative (P-D) feedback is considered. The aim is to resynthesize a P-D feedback controller such that the eigenvalues of the reconfigured closed-loop system can completely recover those of the original close-loop system, and make the corresponding eigenvectors of the former as close to those of the latter as possible. Based on a parametric result of P-D feedback eigenstructure assignment in second-order dynamic systems, parametric expressions for all the P-D feedback gains and all the closed-loop eigenvector matrices are established and a parametric algorithm for this reconfiguration design is proposed. The parametric algorithm offers all the degrees of design freedom, which can be further utilized to satisfy some additional performances in control system designs. This algorithm involves manipulations only on the original second-order system matrices, thus it is simple and convenient to use. An illustrative example and the simulation results show the simplicity and effect of the proposed parametric method.

Identification of Chinese Event Types Based on Local Feature Selection and Explicit Positive & Negative Feature Combination

  • An approach to identify Chinese event types is proposed in this paper which combines a good feature selection policy and a Maximum Entropy (ME) model. The approach not only effectively alleviates the problem that classifier performs poorly on the small and difficult types, but improve overall performance. Experiments on the ACE2005 corpus show that performance is satisfying with the 83.5% macro - average F measure. The main characters and ideas of the approach are: (1) Optimal feature set is built for each type according to local feature selection, which fully ensures the performance of each type. (2) Positive and negative features are explicitly discriminated and combined by using one - sided metrics, which makes use of both features' advantages. (3) Wrapper methods are used to search new features and evaluate the various feature subsets to obtain the optimal feature subset.

  • Due to the increasing occurrence of maritime accidents and high-level requirements and modernization of naval wars, the concept of ship environment adaptability becomes more and more important. Therefore, it is of great importance to carry out an evaluation system for ship environment adaptability, which contributes to both ship design and classification. This paper develops a comprehensive evaluation system for ship environment adaptability based on fuzzy mathematics theory. An evaluation index system for ship environment adaptability is elaborately summarized first. Then the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy weighting methods are applied to aggregate the evaluations of criteria weights for each criterion and the corresponding subcriteria. Next, the multilevel fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is applied to assess the ship integrative environment adaptability. Finally, in order to verify the proposed approach, an illustrative example for optimization and evaluation of five ship alternatives is adopted. Moreover, the influence of criteria weights, membership functions and fuzzy operators on the results is also analyzed.
