  • Haptization is delivering the properties of a data set to the user through the haptic sensory channels. When multidimensional information is imparted to the user, unexpected interactions between haptic attributes can cause the perceived information by the user to be distorted from what is contained in the original data set. Such possibility must be carefully considered in designing haptization methods. Previously, we developed a haptic rendering algorithm for the simultaneous presentation of object shape and stiffness for data haptization. In this research, we extend the algorithm to be applicable to several common data structures. We then shift our attention to the haptization of other haptic attributes including friction and damping.

  • This paper proposes a mobile navigation system which haptically presents the way to go to visually impaired persons. In order to convey the tactile information to the visually impaired persons, we develop a new tactile module with a solenoid, a permanent magnet and an elastic spring. Furthermore, we suggest 2D vibration flow which originates from one point and gradually propagates to other points on a surface of the haptic navigation system. The tactile module and the vibration flow method are incorporated into the proposed haptic navigation system and they stimulate the user's finger pad and palm, respectively. We conduct experiments to investigate that the proposed navigation system haptically provides the direction to the users. From the experimental results, we verify that the proposed system can generate enough tactile sensation to guide the direction to go in real-time.

  • Endoscopic spine surgery is an advanced surgical technique for spinal surgery since it minimizes skin incision, muscle damage, and blood loss compared to open surgery. It requires, however, accurate positioning of an endoscope to avoid spinal nerves and to locate the endoscope near the target disk. Before the insertion of the endoscope, a guide needle is inserted to guide it. Also, the result of the surgery highly depends on the surgeons' experience and the patients' CT or MRI images. Thus, for the training, a number of haptic simulators for spinal needle insertion have been developed. But, still, it is difficult to be used in the medical field practically because previous studies require manual segmentation of vertebrae from CT images, and interaction force between the needle and soft tissue has not been considered carefully. This paper proposes AI-based automatic vertebrae CT-image segmentation and haptic rendering method using the proposed need-tissue interaction model. For the segmentation, U-net structure was implemented and the accuracy was 93% in pixel and 88% in IoU. The needle-tissue interaction model including puncture force and friction force was implemented for haptic rendering in the proposed spinal needle insertion simulator.

  • The theories of optical/haptic perception provide us contrasting insights into the perception of space in movie and architecture. Through the lenses of these theories, this study aims to analyse the optical and haptical aspect of the medieval library of the film, The Name of the Rose. The dominance of vision over the other senses has been maintained by many philosophers, such as Plato, Aristotle, and Aquinas, and this trend leads to the development of the hierarchical and perspective space of Renaissance and Modern Architecture. Those conceptions of optical space help us not only identify space as clear and distinct three-dimensional entity but also separate the subject and the object. However, tactile/haptic perception is more useful to explain the experience of film and contemporary architecture than optical perception. This haptic space is developed by Alois Riegl, Walter Benjamin, and Gilles Deleuze. This study intends to search for the difference between two perceptions on the architectural space of the movie, examine the relation between architecture and human, space and user.

  • When using commercialized robot assisted laparoscopic, surgeon has met some problems to depend only on image of the surgical field. To solve it, there were various researches. The previous study showed that it is possible to estimate the operation force on the commercialized instrument inside patient without sensors. To apply the estimated force to a haptic master console for the laparoscopy surgical robot system, the light haptic master console should be designed. This paper suggests the design of lighter master console handle to reduce a weight of the console whose structure can match with the joint and DOF of an instrument. A cable-conduit mechanism is designed to make light structure to perform a delicate manipulation. The cable-conduit mechanism removes the weight and inertia of link caused by haptic actuator and encoder which is separated from handle link of a manipulator.

  • This paper presents a new colonoscopy training simulator that includes a specialized haptic device and graphics algorithms to transfer haptic sensation through a long and flexible tube, and manage large number of polygons. The developed haptic device makes the colonoscope tube move along the two guiding rods in the translational direction. The torque of the roll motion is transferred by a timing belt and pulleys. A special guide is developed, which allows the force and torque from the motors to be transmitted to the user without loss. The haptic device is evaluated by physicians. One of the important skills of the colonoscopy, jiggling is incorporated for the first time by the developed sensor mechanism using photo-sensors. A colonoscope handle that shares the look, feel, and functions with the actual colonoscope, is developed with the necessary electronics inside. The number of polygons is reduced by an edge-collapse algorithm for real-time simulation. The algorithms to import CT data, to segment the colon image, to extract centerline of the colon, and to construct the colon surface, are integrated into a Colon Modeling Kit system that performs all these processes in real-time.

  • This paper suggests an input device that allows a user not only to naturally interact with education contents in virtual environment but also to sense haptic feedback according to his/her interaction. The proposed system measures a user's motion and then creates haptic feedback based on the measured position. To create haptic information in response to a user's interaction with educational contents in virtual environment, we develop a motion input device which consists of a motion controller, a haptic actuator, a wireless communication module, and a motion sensor. To measure a user's motion input, an accelerometer is used as the motion sensor. The experiment shows that the proposed system creates continuous haptic sensation without any jerky motion or vibration.

  • This paper describes the development of a cylindrical-object grasping force measuring system applied haptic technology to measure the grasping force of strokes patients' fingers and other patients' paralyzed fingers. Because the cylindrical-object and the force measuring device of the developed cylindrical-object grasping force measuring system are connected with the electrical wires, patients and their families have difficulty not only measuring the patients' grasping force using the system but also knowing their rehabilitation extent when using it. In this paper, the cylindrical-object grasping force measuring system applied haptic technology was developed, and the cylindrical-object grasping force measuring device sends data to the rehabilitation evaluating system applied haptic technology by wireless communication. The grasping force measurement characteristic test using the system was carried out, and it was confirmed that the rehabilitation extent of the patients' paralyzed fingers and normal people fingers can be evaluated.

  • This paper proposes the electric stimulus tactile apparatus system(TESTAS) loaded on the haptic interface using ultrasonic motors (USMs) To touch the virtual object like wall in graphic, the 6 DOF haptic interface provides force feedback to users as if it is real. But the case of sharp virtual object like a puncture, it could not provided the sense of pain, but only the reaction-force. After the TESTAS had been loaded on this haptic interface, it could provide not only the force but also the pain to users. In this way, when users take the haptic and tactile informations at the same time, they easily have a correct understanding of virtual object.

  • Tight fitting glove pattern is necessary to convey oscillation to the skin from the sensors attached on the hands as found in the haptic device. However, it has been difficult to provide customized glove pattern for haptic device so far. The objective of the paper is to develop a 2D pattern that fit tightly to hands by adopting the recent 3D technology to the clothing science. In this study, the user graphic interface application software(2C-AN) for the semi-automatic garment pattern generation has been utilized to develop the methodology of construct tight-fitting glove pattern for the hand in natural position. A basic pattern was developed directly from the 3D images of hand and the verification of the proposed pattern was also provided.
