Empathy was defined in this study as the vicarious affective response of a person to the perceived experience of another. The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between empathic development of children and intimacy with parents, socio-economic status, and children's empathic response to specific affective situations happy, sad, angry and fearful. The subjects for this study were 8-, 10-, and 12-year-old children attending an elementary school located in Seoul. Among the subjects, 158 boys and 149 girls lived with their parents, and 20 boys and 35 girls were reared in orphanges. They were from a residential area with higher, middle, and lower class families. The instruments consisted of two modified empathy measures and two questionnaires developed by the researcher. One of the empathy measures was based on Feshbach & Roe's affective situation test for empathy. In order to determine the eight themes, 20 children were interviewed individually about situations that made them "happy, sad, angry, and afraid". From the pool of responses, eight themes representing happy, sad, angry and fearful situations were selected. Each story consisted of a series of three pictures accompanying narration. Another modified empathy measure was developed by the researcher based upon Bryant's empathy scale. This measure consisted of 17 statements describing happy, sad, angry and fearful situations. The items in this scale were selected from a pilot study. The two questionnaires developed by the researcher were to test children's intimacy for their parents and feminity. The data was analyzed with T-test and F-test. Children's intimacy with their parents, particularly, son's intimacy with their mothers, was a significant variable in empathic development. Children living with their parents had higher scores on Feshbach & Roe's Empathy Test than those brought up in orphanages. In general, the older the children the higher the empathy score. Girls were more empathic than boys on Bryant's scale. The subjects showed their highest empathy score in the sad, and the lowest in the fearful situation. The older the children the higher the empathy score in the sad and angry situations. These results reflected children's life experiences and cultural differences. Particularly, mother-son intimacy found in this study contrasts with the mother-daughter intimacy found in American studies.
The purpose for this study is to research the perception of happiness among the kindergarten young children. The subjects were kindergarten young children of 6, 7 years old in Kwangju. The finding of this study were as follows : 1. kindergarten young children of 6, 7 years old considered that the most important elements of happiness to have a positive mind, to be loved. And kindergarten young children of 7 years old perceived spend time with family as happiness. 2. 'the most moment when you feel happy" perceived that the most important elements of happiness were to be loved, play with children and to spend time with children. 3. 'To be happy' perceived that the most important elements of happiness were the relationship of parents and friends. Especially, seven years old children perceived to be able to do self-development. Therefore, I suggested it is necessary to study a program of young children's happiness, a program of parent's participation for young children's happiness in kindergarten, and a program of young children' career education.

Recently, the rise in the housing burden on young couples has led to a serious housing poverty among young people. The number of young people who move into public rental housing is very small because the eligibility for public rental housing is determined based on income, the status of housing subscription, and the size of the household. With this background, the government launched a public rental housing program called Happy Housing Project, which gives young people the priority to move in first. However, the program is facing an obstacle due to the opposition of local residents. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether public rental housing can induce the NIMBY syndrome through conducting a literature review, followed by an analysis of NIMBY syndrome around the currently supplied Happy House development areas, and finally analyzing the household characteristics in order to identify which households were prone to the NIMBY syndrome. To confirm the existence of the NIMBY syndrome, this paper comparatively analyzed the two groups using binary logit analysis. The first group consists of households that are against the Happy House policy, and the second group consists of households that are aware of the Happy House development taking place in their neighborhoods, and are against the development. This study considered the households against the Happy House development in their neighborhoods to have NIMBY tendencies, and focused on comparing the households with NIMBY tendencies with those who do not. To confirm whether the residents around the Happy House neighborhoods have NIMBY tendencies, this paper compared the two groups and confirmed that about 4% of the households have NIMBY tendencies. This paper subsequently analyzed the households with NIMBY tendencies, and found them to have a higher number of children, reside in apartments and reside in owned homes. The volume of the 2018 Happy Housing (35,000 households) is three times higher than that of 2017. The present study aims to analyze the tendency of residents who oppose the construction of Happy Housing so as to derive policy implications for the smooth provision of public rental housing.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a child's demographic variables and maternal perceptions of the conditions of happiness on their happiness for mothers. The participants of this study comprised 916 mothers of young children, school-aged children, and adolescents. The results revealed that a child's age and the numbers of children influenced maternal happiness when mothers' demographic variables were controlled. In addition, mothers who exhibited high degree of need in terms of the conditions of happiness regarding existence, relatedness, and growth were more likely to be happy than mothers who exhibited low degree of needs. Finally, the expectations regarding growth, which refers to the pursuit of self-accomplishment and meaning, was the most important predictor of maternal happiness. These findings have implications for parent education programs for mothers of young children, school-aged children, and adolescents.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of both social-status and mode of stimulus-presentation on children's empathic behavior, where empathy is defined as either the comprehension and recognition of an affective state in stimulus persons (others) or the empathic response to that perception. Middle-and lower-class kindergarten children were presented with a series of either short-sentence stories or short-pictorial stories. The subjects were asked to indicate how the child in each situation felt by selecting a "happy", "sad", or "angry" face to complete the picture accompanying each story. Immediately following the first question, children were asked to state verbally how the child in the picture might feel. The main results were (1) The mean empathy scores for the comprehension and recognition of an affective state in others and the empathic response to that perception was higher in middle-class children than in lower-class children. (2) There were differences in empathy scores to the three affective situations, i.e. the mean score for both happiness and sadness was significantly greater than for aggression, and (3) The empathy scores in the pictorial-stories were greater than in the sentence-stories.
The purpose of this study was to examine parents' image of kindergarten teacher in a bid to provide useful information on kindergarten teacher and parents education to improve the image of kindergarten teachers. The participants in this study were 90 mothers whose young children attended kindergarten in the city of Busan. They were asked to describe what words came into their mind about the image of kindergarten teacher and what an ideal image of kindergarten teacher should be like. Among the participants, ten mothers were interviewed to tell about the ideal image of kindergarten teacher. The largest number of the parents wrote down the words that represented the image of the personality of kindergarten teachers, and love and friendliness were the most common words that the parents mentioned. As for an ideal image of kindergarten teacher, they wanted kindergarten teachers to love preschoolers, to have a good and friendly personality, to see through young children's eyes and to be positive and happy. It indicated that the parents expected their children to be educated by teachers who are understanding, cheerful, have a good personality and love children as their own children.
Purpose: This mixed-methods study was conducted to compare and analyze the perceptions of children and their parents regarding the meaning of the children's life. Methods: First, children's and parents' perceptions of the meaning of life were analyzed using a quantitative approach, and the cognitive differences between children and parents were then confirmed through a qualitative approach. We integrated the collected data comprehensively. Results: Ten significant differences (awareness of strong points, recognizing oneself as a precious being, relationships with friends, happy memories, liking people, experiencing difficulty, dreams and goals, experiencing love, appreciating life, helping people who are poorer than me) were identified between children and parents. The results of the content analysis of the qualitative data were divided into two variables: children's experiences of the meaning of life (78 significant statements, 32 sub-themes, and 10 themes) and parents' perceptions of the meaning of life of their children (89 significant statements, 36 sub-themes, and 10 themes). Conclusion: Based on these results, we propose developing meaning-centered intervention programs for children and parents and applying them for educational purposes. By doing so, we expect that meaning-centered education for elementary school students will become more active.

Objectives : It is known that children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience significant difficulty in recognizing facial emotion, which involves processing of emotional facial expressions rather than speech, compared to children without ADHD. This objective of this study is to investigate the differences in facial emotion recognition between children with ADHD and normal children used as control. Methods : The children for our study were recruited from the Suwon Project, a cohort comprising a non-random convenience sample of 117 nine-year-old ethnic Koreans. The parents of the study participants completed study questionnaires such as the Korean version of Child Behavior Checklist, ADHD Rating Scale, Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version. Facial Expression Recognition Test of the Emotion Recognition Test was used for the evaluation of facial emotion recognition and ADHD Rating Scale was used for the assessment of ADHD. Results : ADHD children (N=10) were found to have impaired recognition when it comes to Emotional Differentiation and Contextual Understanding compared with normal controls (N=24). We found no statistically significant difference in the recognition of positive facial emotions (happy and surprise) and negative facial emotions (anger, sadness, disgust and fear) between the children with ADHD and normal children. Conclusion : The results of our study suggested that facial emotion recognition may be closely associated with ADHD, after controlling for covariates, although more research is needed.
The gene encoding solute carrier family 9 member 6 (SLC9A6) on Xq26.3 is associated with Christianson syndrome (CS) mimicking Angelman syndrome. In CS, developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) appears in about 20%, and DEE with spike-and-wave activation in sleep (SWAS) is reported only in several cases. A 10-year-old boy with DEE showed multidrug resistant focal seizures from 6 months of age. He had progressive microcephaly, regression, global developmental delay without speech, hyperkinesia, and truncal ataxia; he had a long thin face, esotropia, and happy demeanor. Brain magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated cerebellar atrophy. Electroencephalogram at 7.5 years of age showed nearly continuous diffuse paroxysms in slow wave sleep. The seizures were responsive to corticosteroids for a while. Trio whole exome sequencing exhibited a likely pathogenic variant of SLC9A6 in the proband and his asymptomatic mother: c.1194dup (p.Leu399AlafsTer12). This is a rare case report of CS with DEE-SWAS in a Korean patient.
The non-contact body temperature measurement system is one of the key factors, which is manage febrile diseases in mass facilities using optical and thermal imaging cameras. Conventional systems can only be used for simple body temperature measurement in the face area, because it is used only a deep learning-based face detection algorithm. So, there is a limit to detecting abnormal symptoms of the infants and young children, who have difficulty expressing their opinions. This paper proposes an improved facial expression recognition algorithm for detecting abnormal symptoms in infants and young children. The proposed method uses an object detection model to detect infants and young children in an image, then It acquires the coordinates of the eyes, nose, and mouth, which are key elements of facial expression recognition. Finally, facial expression recognition is performed by applying a selective sharpening filter based on the obtained coordinates. According to the experimental results, the proposed algorithm improved by 2.52%, 1.12%, and 2.29%, respectively, for the three expressions of neutral, happy, and sad in the UTK dataset.
