  • To investigate natural dyeing properties of bast fiber, properties of pre mordanting dyeing of sappan wood, gardenia and gallnut such as K/S values, developed color, and fastness were evaluated. Silk showed the most increased K/S values by pre mordanting treatment when Fe was uses as a mordant. The optimized amount of Fe was 3%. The colors of sappan wood was a series of YR. After pre mordanting treatment with Fe, the colors of bast fiber of mulberry and silk showed a series of RP, and the color of cotton showed a series of Y. The color of gallnut was a series of Y regardless of pre mordant treatment. Sappon wood (YR), gardenia (Y), and gallnut (Y) showed various colors such as YR, R, and RP, respectively. Sunlight fastness was not improved by pre mordanting treatment. The effect of pre mordanting treatment was not good. Especially the treatment with Al showed poor sunlight fastness.

  • Because of its tendency of making strong Hoc on the fiber surface with fines, Meogujaengi has not been valued as a material of Hanji. As an attempt to manufacture high value-added products using the material made from Jumchihanji, this study performed morphological classification and chemical component analysis and selection of pulping of Meogujaengi method. As a result, it can be concluded as follows, 1. Meogujaengi is assumed to be a local variety of Broussonetia karinoki and its outward appearance is distinguished from Broussonetia kazinoki. 2. The bast fiber of Meogujaengi is longer and thinner than that of Broussonetia papyrifera or Broussonetia kazinoki. However, because of the coarse linear of fiber tissue, there are many clusters. 3. The cluster phenomenon of Meogujaengi is nothing to do with its chemical components. Although the contents of its chemical components are different from those of Broussonetia kazinoki, no component was found that obstructs pulping. 4. The pretreatment for suppressing the occurrence of clusters of Meogujaengi was effective, and it was necessary to do secondary beating using hollander beater after beating mixed with PAM using knife beater.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the strengthening treatment of methyl cellulose (MC) on properties and aging characteristics of the dewaxed papers during humid heating aging. Beeswax-treated Hanji was dewaxed by the supercritical fluid extraction method, and subsequently the strengthening treatment was performed with MCs having three different viscosities. MC was first applied by dipping a dewaxed paper into a MC solution whose concentration was controlled from 0.5% to 1.5%. After the strengthened papers were artificially aged at $80^{\circ}C$ and 65% RH, the changes in optical and mechanical properties of the samples were evaluated. The results show that viscosity and especially pick-up of MC influenced the strengthening efficiency and aging characteristics of dewaxed paper. Strength was increased with the MC coating weight; in addition, strengthening with MC improved preservability of the dewaxed paper. The optimum conditions for the strengthening with MC was found to be the coating ratio of 4% with 1500 cP MC.

  • To investigate the combination dyeing properties of natural dyes, the combination dyeing using gallnut,-Al, Cu, Fe-sappan wood, and gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-gardenia was performed on bast fiber of mulberry, cotton, silk, and their K/S values, colors, and sunlight fastness were measured. The gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-gardenia dyeing showed the highest K/S values when the dyeing concentration of gallnut is 3%. It tended to show the higher K/S values than gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-sappan wood. The silk showed the highest values of in K/S, and then followed by cotton, and bast fiber of mulberry. The mordants developed different colors on the bast fiber and the cotton treated with gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-sappan wood. However, the silk showed a series of YR, showing no effect of the mordants on the development of color. The combination dyeing of gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-gardenia showed a series of Y. The results showed that sappan wood could develop various colors but gardenia could develop a series of Y. No distinct improvement on sunlight fastness of the combination dyeing was observed.

  • Many historical archives have been deteriorated by aging with time. Various kinds of defects such as worm-hole, yellowing, brittleness are observed and their severity was dependent on raw material type, storage condition, and so on. For a long-term use and storage, a proper preservation treatment is required. Many studies on preservation and conservation have been carried out on hanji which was made from mulberry fiber, but there are few concerns on foreign paper. Therefore, aging and chemical strengthening treatment was done on paper made of bamboo and wood fibers depending on aging condition, the type and pickup weight of chemicals and treatment method. When methyl cellulose was treated with impregnation or brushing, the aged paper was strengthened effectively. The strengthening effect by chemicals was dependent on the aged condition of the paper.

  • The Annals of Joseon Dynasty, which recorded governmental affairs for 472 years (AD 1392-1863) during the Joseon dynasty is an representative paper cultural heritage in Korea. Being recognised their authenticity and values they were designated as the No 151 national treasure of Korea in 1973 and registered as 'The Memories of the World' by UNESCO in 1997. Unusually, some volumes of the Annals were treated by beeswax for the permanent preservation. However, the examinations on the deterioration of the beeswax-treated volumes had been exposed the serious damage than the untreated volumes. In particular, the larger amount of beeswax were worst in deterioration condition. In order to solve these problems, NRICH(National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage) of Korea launched the investigation study for the conservation of beeswax-treated volumes of the Annals. Now then, the five study areas have been set up; 1) to understand the damaged condition of the Annals; 2) to analyse the raw materials and production techniques; 3) to test the degradation degree using the duplication samples for understanding the aging factors and mechanism; 4) to develop the conservation techniques through dewaxing and thereafter strengthening the base paper of Hanji; 5) to develop the long-term storage technique using inert gases. On the basis of outcomes from this study, NRICH will plan to establish the systematic conservation and management plan for the beeswax-treated volumes of the Annals in future.

  • In this study, wheat starch adhesive was investigated the shape and structure of starch, the difference in characteristics such as chemical composition according to the fermenting period of 2 years or less. The fermenting period of wheat starch adhesive is 1 month, 2months, 4 months,6 months, 1 year, 2years old. The wheat starch adhesives were investigated total sugar contents, protein contents, properties of gelatinization, pH, the bonding strength and also observed the surface of starch,. As a result, the longer the fermenting period, the increasing in total sugar contents and decreasing in protein contents. The particle shape and surface were similar regardless of the period. In addition, properties of gelatinization according to the fermenting period also could not see the difference. In pH of the adhesive, the longer the fermenting period, the near to neutral. The adhesive was high bonding strength in 4 months, but appeared a tendency to decrease from 6 months. The damage assessment through the UV degradation in regard to the papers applied the adhesive was accomplished. Color difference was no change except 1 month. The 4 months and 6 months' pH was each 5.0, 5.2. But it was near to neutral that the 12 months and 24 months' pH was each 5.7, 5.9.

  • Pulping of paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki) white bast has been examined by novel atmospheric pressure pulping methods. The viscosity of pulp has been found to be highly sensitive and variable with pulping methods. Therefore, selections of pulping chemicals and conditions are very important. Two kinds of pulping procedures were employed for the high viscosity pulp manufacturing. The one is ammonium oxalate treatment and the other is sodium chlorite and acetic acid treatment. Not only chemical components and pulp yields which of paper mulberry white bast but also water retention value (WRV), whiteness index, yellowness index, and colors of every pulp were examined. The hot water, 1% NaOH, and ethanol-benzene extractives which of paper mulberry white bast were 4.48%, 28.45%, and 2.84%, respectively. The contents of holocellulose, lignin, and ash were 90.66%, 1.05%, and 2.18%, respectively. In the pulp yields, group 1 which treated with only ammonium oxalate were 77.04-81.71%, group 2 which treated with ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite separately and washed between first and second stages were 64.15-83.90%, group 3 which treated with ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite separately and not washed between first and second stages were 57.35-73.17%, and group 4 which treated with mixed ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite were 66.58-68.43%. The pulps treated with acidified sodium chlorite showed high whiteness index, but the pulps treated with only ammonium oxalate showed high yellowness index. Variations in the combinations of treatments resulted in different pulp characteristics.
