  • In the previous experiments, we reported that ethanol extract of Gastrodiae Rhizoma, the dried tuber of Gastrodia ElataBlume (Orchidaceae) increased pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors. These experiments were undertaken to know whether 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (4-HBD), is one of the major compounds of Gastrodiae Rhizoma increases pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors and changes sleep architectures via activating GABAA-ergic systems in rodents. 4-HBD decreased locomotor activity in mice. 4-HBD increased total sleep time, and decreased of sleep onset by pentobarbital (28 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg). 4-HBD showed synergistic effects with muscimol (a GABAA receptor agonist), shortening sleep onset and enhancing sleep time on pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors. On the other hand, 4-HBD (200 mg/kg, p.o.) itself significantly inhibited the counts of sleepwake cycles, and prolonged total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) in rats. Moreover, 4-HBD increased intracellular Cl levels in the primary cultured cerebellar cells. The protein levels of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and GABAA receptors subunits were over-expressed by 4-HBD. Consequently, these results demonstrate that 4-HBD increased NREM sleep as well as sleeping behaviors via the activation of GABAA-ergic systems in rodents.

  • In this paper, we propose the method of manipulating the gaze direction of 3D FPS game's character by using eye gaze detection from the successive images captured by USB camera, which is attached beneath HMB. The proposed method is composed of 3 parts. At first, we detect user's pupil center by real-time image processing algorithm from the successive input images. In the second part of calibration, when the user gaze on the monitor plane, the geometric relationship between the gazing position of monitor and the detected position of pupil center is determined. In the last part, the final gaze position on the HMD monitor is tracked and the 3D view in game is controlled by the gaze position based on the calibration information. Experimental results show that our method can be used for the handicapped game player who cannot use his(or her) hand. Also, it can Increase the interest and the immersion by synchronizing the gaze direction of game player and the view direction of game character.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm for the automatic registration of two rigid parts using multiple 3D sensor systems on a robot. Four sets of structured laser stripe system consisted of a camera and a visible laser stripe is used for the acquisition of 3D information. Detailed procedures including extrinsic calibration among four 3D sensor systems and hand/eye calibration of 3D sensing system on robot arm are presented. We find a best pose using search-based pose estimation algorithm where cost function is proposed by reflecting geometric constraints between sensor systems and target objects. A pose with minimum gap and height difference is found by greedy search. Experimental result using demo system shows the robustness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

  • A microsurgery telerobotic system has been developed to aid surgeons from physiological tremor, eye stram, hand tremor, contagious and radioactive hazard. This paper identifies four general areas of advanced microsurgery and analyzes the motion, tools, accuracy and applying forces with respect to microsurgery tasks, and proposes the criteria to design the microsurgical robot. The analysis of microsurgery can be helpful to clarify some basic concept and design of surgical robots. Based on this analysis results, we propose an efficient in-parallel-platform manipulator having a special kinematic structure suitable for microsurgery.

  • To improve the visual servoing performance, several strategies were proposed in the past such as redundant feature points, using a point with different height and weighted selection of image features. The performance of these visual servoing methods depends on the configuration between the camera and object. And redundant feature points require much computation efforts. This paper proposes the visual servoing method based on the disturbance obsever, which compensates the upper off-diagonal component of image feature jacobian to be the null. The performance indices such as sensitivity for a measure of richness, sensitivity of the control to noise, and comtrollability are shown to be improved when the image feature Jacobian is given as a block diagonal matrix. Computer simulations are carried out for a UUMA560 robot and show some results to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Diabetes is a chronic condition that happens when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin or when the body's insulin is ineffectively used. Uncontrolled diabetes causes hyperglycaemia, or high blood sugar, which causes catastrophic damage to many of the body's systems, including the neurons and blood vessels, over time. The burden of disease on the global healthcare system is enormous. As a result, early diabetes diagnosis is critical in saving many lives. Current methods for determining whether a person has diabetes or is at risk of acquiring diabetes, on the other hand, rely heavily on clinical biomarkers. This research presents a unique deep learning architecture for predicting whether or not a person has diabetes and the severity levels of diabetes from the person's retinal image. This study incorporates datasets such as EyePACS and IDRID, which comprise Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) images and uses Dense-121 as the base due to its improved performance.

  • Until now, the study of eye refractive error examination for high school students are a few report that in Korea. In particular, there is few report about the visual power for same group during several years. We compared the study of refractive error done this year with that reported three years ago at the same high school. From the these data, the distribution of ammetropia was investigated. The study of refractive error for high school students was also compared with those reported before for the Adults and the middle school student. When the visual power is refered to spherical equivalent, the 36% of the whole students examined above had emmetropia and the other part of them fumed out to be ammetropia which is classify to 60.6% belonged to myopia and 4.4% belonged to hyperpia. The ratio of myopia for this year students is increased in comparision with the students in 1995. The ratio of emmetropia for this year students is 7.4% higher, and the ratio of myopia for this year students is 4% higher, but the ratio of hyperopia is very lower than that for the adults in 1997. In the kind of refractive error, it is classified that a simple myopia is shown to highest ratio as a 28.6% of 1212 eyes examined, a compound myopic astigmatism to the next high ratio as a 22.4%, a simple myopic astigmatism as 14.4%, a simple hyperopic astigmatism as 3.1%, a mixed astigmatism as a 1.7%, a simple astigmatism as 1.2%, a compound hyperopic astigmatism as 1.2%, respectively. The percentage of an astigmatism is a 76.7% of total eyes examined if Cyl-0.25 Dptr is included to an astigmatism. On the other hand, The percentage of an astigmatism is a 45.6% of total eyes examined if Cyl-0.25 Dptr is excluded to an astigmatism. In the kind of astigmatism, the number of students had an astigmatism with the rule is about 4.5 times than that of astigmatism against the rule. From the result of comparision the right eye with the left eye, the right eye of the students had more a myopic refractive error than the left eye, which is same as adults' case, there is no difference in a refractive error between the boy students and the girl students.

  • Purpose: To report a case of toxic optic neuropathy caused by chlorfenapyr ingestion accompanied by central nervous system involvement. Case summary: A 44-year-old female visited our clinic complaining of reduced visual acuity in both eyes for 7 days. She had ingested a mouthful of chlorfenapyr for a suicide attempt 2 weeks prior to the visit. Gastric lavage was performed immediately after ingestion at the other hospital. Her best-corrected visual acuity was finger count 30 cm in the right eye and hand motion in the left eye. Both pupils were dilated by 5.0 mm and the response to light was sluggish in both eyes. A relative afferent pupillary defect was detected in her left eye. Funduscopy revealed optic disc swelling in both eyes. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a symmetric hyper-intense signal in the white matter tract including the internal capsule, corpus callosum, middle cerebellar peduncle, and brainstem. The patient was diagnosed with toxic optic neuropathy induced by chlorfenapyr ingestion, and underwent high-dose intravenous corticosteroid pulse therapy. Three days later, the best-corrected visual acuity was no light perception in both eyes. Three months later, optic atrophy was observed in both eyes. Optical coherence tomography revealed a reduction in the thicknesses of the retinal nerve fiber layer and ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer in the macular area. Conclusions: Ingestion of even a small amount of chlorfenapyr can cause severe optic nerve damage through the latent period, despite prompt lavage and high-dose steroid treatment.

  • As the eye irritant test of lens washing agent, ReNu$^{TM}$ was analysed using Draize methods (1959) according to KFDA Guidelines. In addition, to test the potential toxicity of test articles the ratio of inflammatory cells and non-inflammatory epitheloid cells were also observed using smear cytology methods against ocular discharge. At test, the histopathological changes on the cornea, iris, retina and sclera were also observed in all animals. Slight irritancy of the cornea and conjunctiva were observed at 1, 2 and 3 days after dropping in non-washing group. The Mean Index of Ocular Irritation(MIOI) of these points are detected as 4.17, 3.00 and 1.33, respectively. In washing group, slight irritancy of the cornea and conjunctiva were observed at 1 and 2 days after dropping with MIOI as 0.67 and 1.33, respectively. Therefore, ReNu$^{TM}$ was considered as non-irritating materials because the MIOI is detected below 5.00 throughout the whole experimental periods in both washing and non-washing groups. The Index of Acute Ocular Irritation(IAOI) is also detected as 4.17(1 day after dropping). Except of the somewhat increase trend of the inflammatory cell ratios in ocular discharge at 1 day after dropping of non-washing group, but significances are not detected, on the other hand, no meaningful changes on smear cytology of ocular discharges are observed in this study. In addition, no abnormal histopathological changes on the cornea, iris, retina and sclera were also not detected in ReNu$^{TM}$ dropping group compared to that of non-treated control eyes.

  • The aim of the study was performed the wave analysis of P-VEP on the normal monocular vision and amblyopia in binocular. The P-VEP of three channels were recorded by the Nicolet system. Five adults (three males, two females, mean=22 years, range=19 to 24) subjects were recorded The subjects were researched the history including the systemic health, medication, genetics, allergy and ocular disease. Visual acuity and stereopsis were recorded for each subject monocularly and binocularly. Also subjects viewed the P-VEP stimulus both monocularly and binocularly through the corrected visual acuity during the VEP were recorded. The results of study suggest that the visual acuity of binocularly is better than with monocularly and the stereopsis was about over 140 sec. On the other hand, the analysis of P-VEP suggest that the amplitude of wave is larger when the monocular eye receives the P-VEP stimulus compared with the binocular eye. However the amplitude of wave in amblyopia had more smaller than the normal monocular The latency period of P-VEP was similar to results between the normal eye and binocular vision. But the amblyopia was a long period compared with the normal monocular and binocular vision. In conclusion, this study indicated that the visual acuity of binocularly have a better than the normal monocular vision, But in the P-VEP test, the amplitude of wave on normal monocularly vision appears to be better through the binocularly. But the amblyopia appeared the low amplitude wave of P-VEP and decreased the visual acuity.
