Influence of Maternal Environmental Tobacco Smoke Exposure Assessed by Hair Nicotine Levels on Birth Weight

  • Background: While the perinatal outcomes of active maternal smoking are well documented, results of the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure during pregnancy are inconsistent. We aimed to examine the effect of ETS exposure, assessed by maternal hair nicotine levels at $35^{th}$ week of gestation, on birth weight and the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) and low birth weight (LBW). Materials and Methods: A total of 871 non-smoking healthy pregnant women were recruited by one Korean hospital between 1 October 2006 and 31 July 2007. Hair samples were collected and anthropometric questionnaires administered at $35^{th}$ week of gestation. The primary outcome was birth weight and secondary outcomes were the risk of babies being SGA and LBW. Results: Log-transformed hair nicotine concentrations were inversely related with birth weight after adjusting for confounding variables (${\beta}=-0.077$, p=0.037). After stratifying hair nicotine levels by tertiles (T1, low [0.0-0.28 ng/mg]; T2, medium [0.29-0.62 ng/mg]; and T3, high [0.63-5.99 ng/mg]), the mean birth weight in each groups were 3,342g (T1) 3,296g (T2) and 3,290 g (T3), respectively. However the difference between groups was not statistically significant by analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA) adjusting for covariates (p=0.062). In logistic regression analysis, the risk of SGA was higher in the T3 (OR=1.59, 95%CI 1.05-2.42) than in the reference group (T1), after controlling for confounding variables. The risk of low birth weight (<2,500g, LBW) was not significantly higher (OR=1.44, 95%CI 0.95-2.19), but the risk of babies being below 3,000g birth weight was increased in the T3 group (OR=1.53, 95%CI 1.00-2.36) compared with that in the T1 group. Conclusions: Maternal ETS exposure during pregnancy was inversely related with birth weight. The risk of SGA increased in the highest ETS exposure group compared with in the low exposure group. To prevent ETS exposure during pregnancy, more comprehensive tobacco control policies are needed.

서열과 한냉 자극에 대한 반복 국소 노출이 혈류량 및 심박수에 미치는 영향 (Effect of local heating and cooling on blood flow and heart rate.)

  • 온랭 열 자극에 대하여 인체의 말초 혈류량과 심박수가 어떻게 반응하는가를 관찰하기 위하여 건강한 성인 여자 4명을 피험자로 실험군과 비교군으로 나누어 실험을 실시하였다. 실험군은 온랭열 자극의 단기 훈련을 12회 실시하고 비교군은 실험군의 초기와 말기 2회 실시하여 얻은 결과를 비교ㆍ검토하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. $\circled1$ 실험군에서의 손가락 혈류량의 초기 반응은 훈련 후에 민감해졌다. $\circled2$ 심박수는 냉수 노출시보다 온수 노출시 증가하였다. $\circled3$ 실험군과 비교군간에는 혈류량의 변화 형태와 심박수에 차이가 있었다. 이상에서 E-군과 C-군의 혈류량과 심박수에서 차이를 나타낸 것은 단기 훈련 효과에 의한 것으로 추정된다.

청소년의 건강행태와 천식 진단과의 융합적 관련성: 성별 비교 (The Relation between Health Behavior and Asthma : Comparison of Male and Female Adolescents)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 남 녀 청소년의 건강행태와 천식 진단과의 관련성을 파악하기 위함으로 질병관리본부가 2016년에 실시한 제12차 청소년 건강행태 온라인조사의 원시자료를 사용하여 SPSS 21.0으로 복합표본 분석하였다. 본 연구의 대상자는 총 65,528명으로 남자 청소년의 천식 진단율은 10.3%, 여자 청소년의 천식 진단율은 7.8%이다. 연구결과, 남자 청소년에서는 천식진단과 관련성이 있는 건강행태 변수는 음주 경험(OR=1.087), 간접흡연 노출(OR=1.087), 격렬한 신체활동 비실천(OR=1.084), 비만(OR=1.291), 충분하지 않은 수면시간(OR=1.113)과 스트레스(OR=1.257)로 나타났다. 여자 청소년에서 천식과 관련성이 있는 건강행태 변수는 흡연 경험(OR=1.242), 간접흡연 노출(OR=1.111), 격렬한 신체활동 실천(OR=0.899), 비만(OR=1.178), 스트레스(OR=1.251)였다. 본 연구의 결과는 성별에 따른 천식청소년의 특성화된 건강증진 역량강화 프로그램 개발을 위한 기초자료로 활용할 것이다.

다이클로로메테인에 의한 수부의 화학 화상: 2예 (Dichloromethane-Induced Chemical Burn of the Hand: A Report of Two Cases)

  • Dichloromethane is widely used as a solvent in paint removers. Unlike inhalation injury, contact injury caused by dichloromethane is not well known. Two patients who had undergone skin grafting to treat chemical burn of the hand caused by dichloromethane exposure were evaluated, and a literature review was done. Two healthy men aged 37 and 40 years visited our hospital with chief complaints of pain on the hands due to dichloromethane exposure. The patients had not worn protective clothing. Multiple bullae were initially noted. On the next day, fluctuation in bullae and purulent discharge were observed, and central eschar change was noted. On the 18th day after the burn, escharectomy and full-thickness skin graft were performed. Therefore, workers who use dichloromethane should wear protective clothing at workplaces. If exposed to the chemical, the worker should be instructed to do a quick wash and visit the hospital.

조리시 가열에 따른 수돗물 중 염소소독부산물의 농도 변화와 인체 섭취 노출 (Changes in the Concentrations of the Tap Water Chlorination By-Products by Heating during Cooking, and Human Ingestion Exposure)

  • A number of disinfection by-products (DBPs) are formed as a result of the addition of chlorine into the public water supply and some of them have been suggested to cause adverse health effects on humans. However, the estimation of human ingestion exposure to each DBP has been performed simply by multiplying the concentration of a chemical in the cold tap water by the volume of water consumed during a given period of time. However, a questionnaire concerning water consumptions administered to sixty people residing in Chunchon showed that the volume of tap water consumed accounted for approximately 70% of the total volume of water consumed and that of heated water represented approximately 94% of tap water ingested. Heating durations for water-containing foods (e. g., soups and pot stews) and heated beverages (e. g., barley tea) were grouped into 10, 20, 30, and 35 minutes. Based on these time frames, an aluminum pot containing one liter of tap water was heated for the above respective time periods using a gas range to determine the variations of the concentrations of individual DBPs by heating. The pH and total residual chlorine were measured before and after heating. Collected water samples were carried to the laboratory and analyzed for eight DBPs and total organic carbon. Chloroform, bromodichloromethane, chloral hydrate, 1, 2-dichloro-2-propanone, 1, 1, 1-trichloropropanone, and dichloroacetonitrile were not detected following heating for 10 minutes and longer. The concentration of dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) was elevated with heating duration, resulting in the averages of 2.0, 3.1, 4.7, and 12 times the initial concentration, respectively, for 10, 20, 30, and 35 minute heating periods. On the other hand, the concentration of trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) decreased with heating duration, with 0.65, 0.40, 0.34, and 0.19 times lower than the initial concentration. Therefore, it is suggested that ingestion exposure to DCAA increases with heating duration but that ingestion exposure to TCAA decreases. In addition, while the amount of DCAA was elevated at the initial time periods (10 or 20 minutes) and then slowly decreased, that of TCAA was rapidly decreased. In conclusion, water-heating processes during cooking influence the concentrations of individual DBPs in the tap water, with lower levels for volatile DBPs and TCAA, and higher levels for DCAA. Therefore, concentration change needs to be taken into consideration in the estimation of human ingestion exposure to DBPs.

Compressive strength and failure behaviour of fibre reinforced concrete at elevated temperatures

  • This paper presents the effects of elevated temperatures of $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ on the residual compressive strength and failure behaviour of fibre reinforced concretes and comparison is made with that of unreinforced control concrete. Two types of short fibres are used in this study e.g., steel and basalt fibres. The results show that the residual compressive strength capacity of steel fibre reinforced concrete is higher than unreinforced concrete at both elevated temperatures. The basalt fibre reinforced concrete, on the other hand, showed lower strength retention capacity than the control unreinforced concrete. However, the use of hybrid steel-basalt fibre reinforcement recovered the deficiency of basalt fibre reinforced concrete, but still slightly lower than the control and steel fibres reinforced concretes. The use of fibres reduces the spalling and explosive failure of steel, basalt and hybrid steel-basalt fibres reinforced concretes oppose to spalling in deeper regions of ordinary control concrete after exposure to above elevated temperatures. Microscopic observation of steel and basalt fibres surfaces after exposure to above elevated temperatures shows peeling of thin layer from steel surface at $800^{\circ}C$, whereas in the case of basalt fibre formation of Plagioclase mineral crystals on the surface are observed at elevated temperatures.

Analysis of University Student Awareness of Radiation Exposures from Consumer Products

  • Background: Since the terminology 'radioactive consumer product' is not quite familiar to the public and is often considered as negative and detrimental things, the educational curriculum is essential for establishing reliability of nuclear energy related and for the development of better communication strategy of radiation risk with the public. To provide base data which is valuable for establishing efficient curriculum of education and training about radiation safety, it is necessary to apprehend the different level of awareness of radiation exposures classified by various consumer products. Materials and Methods: On November 2014, a question investigation about asking awareness level of radiation exposure from various consumer products was done for university students who are highly educated. The object students are studied at a four-year-course universities which is located at Daejeon City. Results and Discussion: Although the average awareness level is comparatively low, the awareness of senior students, who major in radiation, nuclear related departments and male students are relatively high. On the other hand, the awareness of freshman, sophomore, junior students, who do not major in radiation, nuclear related departments and female students are relatively low. It is necessary to provide various information to avoid unnecessary concerns and misconceptions about radiation exposure. Conclusion: This paper will be an instrument for efficient establishment of curriculum of education and training related with radiation safety.

한국근로자의 직장 내 유해인자 노출과 장기적인 건강문제의 관련성: 제5차 근로환경조사를 이용하여 (Relationship between Workplace Hazard Exposures and Chronic Health Problems in Korea: The Fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey)

  • Purpose: Workers with chronic health problems find it difficult to maintain their work because of socioeconomic difficulties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between physical, ergonomic, and mental health hazards in the workplace and chronic health problems of Korean workers. Methods: A total of 28,807 wage workers participated in the study and were selected using the Fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey (2017). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine the associations between physical, ergonomic, and mental health hazards and chronic health problems. Results: Of the participants, 1,220 (4.23%) had chronic health problems. Even after adjusting the general characteristics, vibration, noise, high temperature, low temperature, dust, chemical and cigarette smoke, fatigue and painful posture, dragging or pushing or moving of heavy objects, repetitive hand or arm movements, working with a computer or smartphone, use of internet or e-mail, and anxiety situations increased the risk of chronic health problems. Conclusion: The study reaffirms that exposure of physical, ergonomic, and mental health hazards in the workplace significantly increases the risk of chronic health problems.

이산화염소 (CIO2)의 간헐적 처리에 따른 넙치, Paralichthys olivaceus 호흡대사율의 경시적 변화 (Serial Changes in the Rate of Respiratory Metabolism of Olive Flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus Exposed to Intermittent Chlorination of Chlorine Dioxide ($CIO_2$))

  • The present study was investigated the effects of chlorine dioxide ($CIO_2$) on the rcspimtory metabolism of olive flounder (Parolichlhys olivaceus) imtermittently exposed to seawater chlorinated by $CIO_2$:. Oxygen consumption of flounder before and after once or twice $CIO_2$-treatment with 12 hr- or/and 24 hr-interval were serially measured with automatic intenniteent-flow respirometer system (AIRS). The oxygen consumption rates of flowKier exposed to 0.10 and 0.20 ppm$CIO_2$, were not different from the control fish prior to the once or twice chlorinations . On the other hand, the respiratory metabolic rates of flounder exposed to 0.30 ppm$CIO_2$ were significantly increased 15% and 22 - 23% after the once and twice chlorinations compared to the control fish. respectively. The flounder exposed In 0.40 and 0.50 ppm$CIO_2$: died within 4 hr and I hr. respectively. The elevation( respiratory metabolism in flounder exposed toO.30 ppm$CIO_2$ and above is considered due to physiological stress caused by $CIO_2$ exposure.

할로겐화합물청정소화약제 안전기준 설정에 관한 연구 (Study on the Safety Standard Establishment of Halogen Clean Extinguishing Agents)

  • 화재에 대한 우수한 소화력, 적응성 및 잔류물이 남지 않는 등의 장점으로 최근 할로겐화합물청정소화약제의 사용량이 증가하고 있다. 하지만 유해성에 대한 검증과 안전기준이 설정되지 않은 상태로 사용되어 사망사고 등의 재해가 다발하고 있는 실정이다. 본 논문은 문헌 및 실험연구를 통해 할로겐화합물청정소화약제의 안전한 사용을 위한 법적인 노출기준과 가스 모니터링과 연계된 정량적 환기시스템, 유해성 주지 및 적정 보호구 선정을 포함한 안전기준 설정을 제안하고자 하였다.
