  • Nowadays, due to the popularization of mobile phone, the functions and using manners of mobile phone have been varied. According to Korea National Statistical Office, the numbers of domestic mobile phone user were 30 million at the end of March 2002. A survey was conducted to investigate the various using manners of mobile phone, especially the young ones from 15 to 28 years old. Two hundred and sixty people participated in this study. According to the result of this study, text messaging was one of the major functions of the mobile phone for the young people. Also, continuous and repetitive use of small key pad of mobile phone for text messaging could cause the repetitive strain injury on hand, especially fingers.

  • A hierarchical planning strategy for dextrous manipulation of multifingered hands with soft finger contact model is proposed. Dextrous manipulation planning can be divided into a high-level stage which specifies the position/orientation trajectories of the fingertips on the object and a low-level stage which determines the contact forces and joint trajectories for the fingers. In the low-level stage, various nonlinear optimization problems are formulated according to the contact modes and integrated into a manipulation planning algorithm to find contact forces and joint velocities at each time step. Montana's contact equations are used for the high-level planning. Quasi-static simulation results are presented and illustrated by employing a three-fingered hand manipulating a sphere to demonstrate the validity of the proposed low-level planning strategy.

  • In this paper, we newly propose a novel control strategy of a three joints-robot finger for the purpose of artificial hands. The robot finger is specifically modeled by using a 3D CAD program (CATIA), considering human fingers, and then the proposed control method is verified through the dynamic simulation tool (Simulink and Recurdyn R2). Each slider is individually controlled to be located at the optimal positions where the maximal joint torque can be generated. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed control method, we devise two cases for the reference position of sliders. By comparing the control performance of two cases, the validity of the proposed control method will be verified.

  • In many cases, tasks are unpredictable and therefore not doable by special-purpose or pro-programble robots. So master/slave type robot hands which combine human perceptions with conventional robot hands are required as robot end effector. These also can be applied to hazardous worksites such as outer space, deep sea and nuclear power plant. In this study, master/slave type robot fingers with 3 joints each are designed and constructed. To control force accurately, TDT(tension difference type) torque sensors are constructed and attached toeachjoints of slave finger and new force reflecting control algorithm is suggested. Finally, experimental results show that the new control algorithm can be successfully applied.

  • We report a rare case of pronator teres syndrome in a young female patient. She reported that her right hand grip had weakened and development of tingling sensation in the first-third fingers two months previous. Thenar muscle atrophy was prominent, and hypoesthesia was also examined on median nerve territory. The pronation test and Tinel sign on the proximal forearm were positive. Severe pinch grip power weakness and production of a weak "OK" sign were also noted. Routine electromyography and nerve conduction velocity showed incomplete median neuropathy above the elbow level with severe axonal loss. Surgical treatment was performed because spontaneous recovery was not seen one month later.

  • A mechanical device was developed for assisting the grasping function of a person whose fingers suffered cervical injury and thus are unable to grasp. This device is composed of a mechanical glove put on the user's hand and a muscle sensor to measure the activity of his or her muscle. The mechanical glove consists of a finger frame, a base and an air cylinder mounted on the base. With the kinematics carefully designed, the finger frame can achieve the grasping motion under the actuation of the air cylinder. For controlling this motion, an innovative sensor was developed to detect the user's motion intention. The sensor measures the change of the muscle stiffness...

  • We propose a finger detection algorithm for computer mouse control to control the most commonly actions of a computer mouse(left, right and double click, scroll up and down then we add open and close, minimize and maximize a window, control the mouse.) We use a built-in web camera to control the mouse tasks. We detected, segment, then recognize the hand in our previous papers [1, 2]. The user will be able to interact with the computer with the number of fingers detected.

  • Prostaglandin E1(PGE1) is a potent vasodilator and is a useful drug for the treatment of occlusive peripheral vascular disease. It has been used systemically via intravenous route or regionally via intraarterial route. We tried intravenous regional administration of PGE1 for the treatment of a patient with occlusive arterial disease involving left fingers. During the 13th injection, the patient complained of severe pain at the injection site during the drug administration. Thereafter, the patient developed painful and severe swelling with blebs on his left hand. Systemic antibiotics were given together with stellate ganglion block of the affected left side. PGE1 was substituted to reserpine, which is subcutaneously injectable, for the second term treatment.

  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the relationship analysis in VDT(visual display terminal) of work hours. Methods : Questionnaires were completed by 41 women in VDT operations. The information was used to estimate multiple regression for the VDT of work hours related factors association. Results : The prevalence of the VDT of work hours was significantly higher in the shoulder which followed by the neck, the hand and fingers, the arms, the lowback, the back. The VDT of work hours decreased with aging. The VDT of work hours increased with work duration, single, lower among habitual exercise. The desk height, the seat pan height, the posture on the sitting, the elbow angle all did not meet the recommended criteria. Conclusions : Data from this study support a statistically significant association with satisfaction for occupation.

  • Pompholyx is a special vesicular type of hand and foot dermatitis. It is an acute, chronic or recurrent dermatosis of the fingers, palms and soles, characterized by a sudden onset of many deep-seated pruritic clear vesicles. We diagnosed a patient with pompholyx as damp heat and treated with wet dressing by gauze soaked in distilled solution of Gamihwangryunhaedok-tang(Jiaweihuanglianjiedu-tang). After treatment with wet dressing, we observed the improvement. Based on this study, it is considered that wet dressing with Gamihwangryunhaedok-tang(Jiaweihuanglianjiedu-tang) can be applied to the treatment of pompholyx.
